It looks nice, but if it cannot transform... don't see much use for it.
Also weird that it looks more like Prime Prime than Cyberverse Prime.

Did you add to the want-list system? You have to wait till the figure actually comes out :)

They DID patent it, they HAD a patent, and for years what Megabloks (and others) were doing was illegal and resulted in a few lawsuits (although I don't think many of them went anywhere).

But patents don't generally last forever - the Lego patent expired on 2011 despite Lego's efforts to get it extended. And honestly? It's the absolute best thing that could have happened to Lego as a company. It means that Lego's continued success is because of their excellent designs and ideas, rather than being able to lazily rest on being the only brick toy in town.

Some of the best most amazing designs have come out of them since the patent expired.

And I have to say, the design of this Optimus is really impressive - if this had been released as an official Lego set, I wouldn't have questioned.

(The 'Stickers over multiple parts' need to piss off, though)

I feel like a Lego set wouldn't go halfway like this though. They would make it actually transform, rather than just requiring complete disassembly to rebuild in another mode

    Maaaaaybe...

The most obvious recent example of Lego designing a 'Transformer' is their Voltron set, which my son owns. It's truly an excellent design and build, and while the limbs transform genuinely, the torso requires some (very minor) disassembly between modes.

Overwatch Bastion almost pulls off a genuine transformation, until you get to the last step and.....rip his head off:

Meanwhile, 'Wrecking Ball' does do the thing without partsforming (IIRC)

There are others too, Galaxy Squad had a cool transforming/combining gimmick and featured a few transformable mechs without partsforming, and the recent 'Hidden Side' Fire Truck also has a mech integrated in to it. But overall it's very difficult to design a transformer out of lego that isn't fragile as hell. There's some really great custom Transformer designs out there but I know from the ones I've attempted building myself over the years, that Lego's tolerances aren't well suited for this sort of thing - things tend to partsform even when they're not meant to! :p

These transformations are extremely basic compared to what it would require to make a good-looking Cyberverse Optimus transform into a seamless truck

Wrecking Ball has a removable cover piece for the "eye".

Lego doesn't typically lend itself well to transforming mechs. There's the longstanding joint issues with large builds, regardless, and then you're further fragmenting potentially load-bearing parts with even more joints and hinges.

Really simple mode-changes are possible, of course, with a bit of imagination. But nice-looking builds that are seamless in all modes and hold up to scrutiny are either impossible, or just hugely impractical, depending on the scale you envision.

Do we know how much this thing costs yet? Basically I don't want to bother having SirToys hunt for it if I'm just going to bow out because the price is too high.
