They look the same to me?

EDIT: Ah, the colour of the lips is slightly different. TBH, didn't even notice. I feel like the hilariously poor rendition of Mark Hamill's face is more of an issue. :lol

And people wonder why manga is selling so well in the USA while the US comic book industry is on its death bed.
That's why One Piece has sales in the hundred millions.

I can agree that he didn’t really provide a compelling reason why Luke didn’t help his sister or brother in law (as a start). I disagree that Rian didn’t do his homework about the franchise. He captured to me the essence of something akin to what Filoni has touched on, that we are all conduits for a larger story, in this case the Force’s story. That old things we love don’t stay around forever and we have to move on, because one day it’ll be our time to pass the torch too.

Bittersweet message, yes. But I think it’s relevant in a day and age when we are literally using CGI to bring long deceased actors’s likenesses back, or asking actors to voice characters they voiced thirty years ago and getting upset that they don’t sound the same.

Like I said, don’t wanna get into it. I love TLJ, I love Witwer.

I don’t see what other way they could have gone about depicting Luke after The Force Awakens. The opening crawl of that movie erases all progress that Luke had as a character since Return of the Jedi. We later find out that Kylo Ren is his nephew that he also failed. Lastly, billions of people are murdered without any action from him. Rian Johnson was tasked with coming up with a compelling reason for all of that. All of this is to say that the Sequel Trilogy was doomed from the start.

But is it worse than this?

Even his real face felt off looking in the special.

Harrison Ford didn't look better either.

At least he still looked like a guy. That comic was apparently trying to be serious.... pffft.

After the fall of his academy, he went to locate the original jedi temple in an effort to reconnect to the force, to meditate and recentre himself as it were. He didn't act upon starkiller base because although he sensed the deaths through the force, he couldn't locate where or how they died, just that they did and he wasn't about to go running around the galaxy aimlessly. That is part of the reason he would agree to train rey when she tracks him down. So she can help stop this rising evil.

There. A reason why he didn't act, continues the story, folds in his failure without having to tear down his character and allows him to take on the mentor role and keep the new character as the focus. He can go with rey to crait and have luke be defending the rebels from invading imperials while rey has the kylo showdown. Or vice versa. But you want to keep focus on the new cast and having luke defend the rebels allows him to be present but off screen for a while.

Yes. The reconnecting to the force bit, and also being aware that Rey exists, and may be the key to defeating Snoke (or vulnerable to him). The heroes just need to wait for the moment is ready (which, as Luke has foreseen is when she leaves with the falcon from Jakku). He obviously would have instructed Han and Chewie to stay close to Jakku (which explains why they just happened to arrive as soon as she broke atmosphere), and bring her to Luke.

Also, create a personal connection between Snoke and Luke, Han, and Leia. Maybe he was previously brought into the fold, and had a falling out with the group when Snoke tried to make his move to betray the OT heroes. I dunno, maybe Snoke convinced the OT heroes that the universe could be saved if they created a new vergence in the force (Rey, obviously). Which is why Anakin's saber called to her (she's basically Anakin reincarnated). But then Luke, Han and Leia, had second thoughts about Snoke's motivations, so made sure he couldn't find her by hiding her on Jakku. Snoke seeks revenge by destroying the things our heros love the most: the new republic, the Jedi Acadamy, and their relationship with Ben Solo. Would it require some exposition? Definitely. But the OT was able to describe Anakin's fall the same way, and fairly decently. So, I think with a little bit of planning, it could have been manageable. This way the story can still be about Rey's journey (and the new friends she meets along the way), but also be an important redemption arc for the OT cast.

Rian did his homework, but he did it all on "how George Lucas made Star Wars movies" and none on "what were they about?" or "what did the characters stand for?" or even "how does its universe work?"

Meanwhile, J.J. missed all the classes about how stories even work.
