The price point is the most worrisome part about it. I don't think they will be O-ring figures at the price. What if they are 5 POA "retro" figures based on the ARAH designs? I don't remember, what were the last retail prices on single carded Joe figures? That would be from the Retaliation line, correct?
Last MSRP was $9.99 IIRC for single carded figures from Retaliation. Hasbro did say they would never make mainline 5 POA figures 3.75/4" again in the mainline but who knows. I highly doubt the retro figures at Walmart are 5POA.
People drop off vintage Joes to my local comic shop on the regular. I'm not sure what the demand for vintage figures would be?
Highly unlikely, like 99% unlikely. Nothing about Hasbro’s past practices leads to believe they they will create a new line of 5POA figures for lines that weren’t 5POA, like the ReAction figures, and market them as a retro line.
Wow, I thought they were more than that. Did they actually lower prices from the POC days? Yeah, you're right. That was a dumb idea.
Wait, wait, hold up! We are talking about a possible retro carded 3.75" Joe line? That would be fan-flipping-tastic. I would be down for the o-ring figures or the 25th style figures. Just like a sneaker collector I would need one to open and one to stay in box. Heck, shoes in general are too utilitarian to collect anyway. I have 3 pairs of footwear, a pair of work boots, a pair for tennis shoes, and a pair of sandals. I guess my wife collects clothes and shoes so I'll just shut-up now.
I think the discrepancy comes from it largely depending on where you got them. MSRP was $9.99, but I remember TRU and online places like BBTS charging about $12.99 for them. Obviously TRU and BBTS were/are always slightly above MSRP on a lot of things.
That's right. Now I remember feeling silly because I paid $12 preordering Jungle-Vipers. Still love that figure though. What are the 4 inch collector grade Star Wars figures selling for at retail nowadays?
$9.84 for the Retro 5 POA and I think $12.93 for the articulated Vintage ones. Also I think 12.93 was the listed price on the Retro Joes. I was somewhat excited when the 25th figures were revealed but really wasn’t sold on them. Then I saw them on a shipper at Wally and bought them on sight. Also didn’t hurt they were $4.88, $5.99 at Target and Kmart. The vehicles came out at about $15.
Yeah it was pretty cool and pretty cheap. I’m trying to remember, wasn’t it was something like 25 figures that were revealed daily on sites but someone figured the code and dropped them all at once? It was 2 box sets and carded figs. Ironically enough, the figs from the box sets are almost exactly who were getting in Classified. But I do remember it doing so well it became a extensive full fledged line. It was right up my alley since I grew up reading the Marvel book that I started out buying off spinner racks in 7-11 right next to the Tron and Double Dragon II arcade machines. Getting characters like Kwinn, Billy, Dr Venom, the Hard Master, Snakes in the coat from issue 2 even Matt Trakker were huge victories in my book.
^Christmas Tree Vipers rule! And we got a decent, waaaaay overpriced Raptor from the wing molds to boot.
FYI: There's a faction breakdown for Scorpion (Storm Shadow) and Tarantula (Snake Eyes). Scorpions and Tarantulas are not insects. They are Arachnids. Arachnids = Arashikage So, in the future if you see any Arachnids listed, you'll instantly know that it's a Ninja character. And yes, codenames carry between lines. That's why we see MV Tarantula, MV Scorpion, MV Mosquito, and MV Lady Bug who are movie versions of Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Scarlett, and The Baroness respectively.
trying to squeeze some mattels in with the hasbros and it's not to bad.i think the road warriors make decent stand in dreadnoks.
Sgt Slaughter works well... funny that it actually looks better than some of the actual Joe branded figures.
Good point about the older materials, didn't realize they had a ton of metal parts back then whereas the new figures have none. Looking at Hasbro's other Retro lines though, Star Wars and TFs are based on the classic molds, whereas their Marvel lines are updated figures on classic packaging.
I am not sure what they did for Transformers but that G1 Prime they released last year has diecast toes, springs in the hips, diecast elbows, rubber tires. That thing is so far away from a modern Hasbro Transformer and they fielded that so the O-Ring and metal hip doesn’t seem to be a big deal. Plus they don’t necessarily need to be exact copies, although I would prefer they are. Remember these? Did they chuck all these things from the early ‘00s away? This wasn’t stuff from the 80’s. Beyond that Hasbro has a massive vintage toy-store chain near them called ToyVault, they sell old toys at 6 locations. If you want an old GI Joe toy..they have it. Years ago the Hasbro GI Joe guys would go into the store looking for old figures as reference to sculpt the 25th anniversary stuff. Even if they have to do a fresh sculpt these are some “soft sculpts.” Even if they had to remake the whole thing. And that’s if they don’t just pull some of those Real American Hero Collection O-Rings repaint them a little and throw them on vintage cards...
