That feeling, over spring break in my freshman year, is unforgettable. I remember watching the pilot on a wednesday afternoon, by myself, in a trailer. A regular trailer, but, this wasn't any ordinary location. This was tybee beach. I watched the show, and fell in love with the dynamics of the show. The mecha itself is the red herron like the pictures. As much of a thesis I want to write about this show, it's indescribable due to anno's ending in End of Evangelion. I knew I wanted an eva 01, and this is my favorite model kit, even with it's problems, but the eva 01 had problems itself. Take care of yourself.
^Nice looking kit! It's been a long time since I've bought any EVA merchandise. I first watched it in 2003 while I was staying at my parents house while I was moving out of one apartment and into another. They were in Arizona for the winter, I had the house to myself, it was a Friday night and I just gotten a bootleg set of the full series + the 2 OVAs. I popped it in around 3:00 in the afternoon and didn't stop until the series & OVAs were over sometime early Saturday morning. When I crawled off to bed all I could see was Evangelion when I closed my eyes. For some reason doing the straight binge made me 'get' the ending of the series, or at least made me think I got it. I focoused on the Kubrick line at that time because it was was fun, had a wonderful variety and was easy to display in a compact area. Some sets were very hard to find but I ended up getting them all. It's been years since I displayed them but I still have them. I don't even remember all of the random EVA figures I bought. Some Kaiyodo stuff which was mostly junk, gashapons, Revoltechs. My favorite is still the Soul of Chogokin EVA-01. It may not be the most dynamic or accurate figure but I love the heft and robust build of it. I'd love to see them revisit Evangelion in the SOC line and make some that are larger.
Just an FYI, I'm selling my 15" Medicom RAH EVA-01: MEDICOM EVANGELION EVA-01 RAH 783 NEW PAINT VER. Brand new/sealed. Authentic. Non-smoking home. About $50-60 below Japanese retail.
Anyone's old Kaiyodo EVA figures break on them? My deluxe EVA-01 broke...for $30+ back in the day it was awesome but 1 of the pegs had snapped off rendering a limb useless. Glad it lasted just fine for almost 20 years prior.
Kotobukiya's old mono-shaft action figures were notorious for breaking. That yours lasted 20 years puts you ahead of the curve.
Mine finally arrived! Believe it or not, this is actually my first Eva model, EVER. I've got an old Sega toys Unit 00 and the original Kaiyodo figures, but never any of the Bandai or Koto kits. I see how much of the platform I need to paint... like all of it... but the Eva's going to be a lot of fun!
I'm a little too tired to work on much tonight, so I did some delicate trimming. Nipped and sanded the horn, very nicely molded. Didn't realize the white is glossy plastic. Interesting. I don't need to treat this like some of my RG Gundams, so while the Eva is only going to get the basic panel lining and some details painted, the platform will get all of its missing colors painted in. Working my way out starting with the gray for the broad tiles, then it's the yellow bands, the black borders, and red triangles. I don't normally use decals, but the caution stripes might be the only ones I use.
Simple tip for painting, don't be afraid to color outside the lines because you can always paint over that. The border around those lines is supposed to be black anyway.
Been jumping between projects again, sorry I didn't post much since my last session on the RG Unit01. Next round of colors on the platform, to be trimmed in later. This wire is very rigid and tough to bend at the tip so it fits into the plug module, but the umbilical cable is set and ready for detailing. I had built the Pallet Gun two weeks ago while I was working my way through the hands and setting up to paint the Progressive Knives. Tonight I actually accomplished the first few steps of assembling the torso. The color separation is starting to show.
Grinding my knuckles... literally. I still need to fill in the panel lines but I went with the anime accurate color for the 'spikes' on the knuckle of the index fingers and thumbs with a brushtip of orange paint. Then I completed the endostructure of the torso. I almost made a mistake in building the hip posts, I accidentally got the parts reversed and cemented the ring that holds them together. Fortunately I was able to pry it apart and fix it.
This is a tough spot.. excellent color separation... weak parts design. Three layers to make the chest plate, with the swiveling clavicle armor sandwiched in between, but it doesn't hold together very well unless you cement the parts. Edit, this completes the entire torso. *I've since gone back and filled in those detail lines down the flanks. Trying to equalize the spacing between those plates going down its back and adjusting the rotation of the abdominal sections.
Back to work in the Eva, I started painting the Entry Plug. Red band is diluted acrylic, I'll need to do that on the vents on the back end but I wanted to paint the area first. My green paint is a little too dark, so the next coat will be cut with some white paint to brighten it. Now for the fun part. building the legs and getting to see how Bandai replicates muscle movement. This is GENIUS!! I've seen simulated quadriceps muscles in Gundams with moving pistons, but never like this. It's practically like looking at real muscles stretching and pulling. the Sinewy, emaciated looks of the Evas is really looking good with this kit. and so far so good, this is a fast build.
