You're missing my point. Decepticons are bad guys. Sentinel is a bad guy. If your collection is strictly official Decepticon/Autobot split, ignorant of who the character actually is, then Sentinel can go on the Autobot shelf. But then you'd also have to put Jetfire with the Decepticons, when he's clearly a good guy and that just doesn't work, and Lockdown would have nowhere to go. The more logical choice would be to split your factions more along the lines of good guys together and bad guys together. Then Sentinel goes with the bad guys because he's a villain, who are like 99% Decepticons so it's basically the Decepticon group anyway. You say it's a black and white way of looking at it, but considering the original question was "should he go on this shelf or the other one?" I'd argue that the only way to look at it is black and white considering there are only two options

That's not what you said the first time. I agree if we're doing villains vs. heroes he obviously belongs on the villains shelf. But you at first said he actually was a Decepticon which is what I took issue with.

Man, this Sentinel Prime talk is really confusing me. It's an interesting debate though!

Honestly, I feel like him and Lockdown are in their own categories. They do bad things, and are clearly villains, however neither identify as a Decepticon, and in both cases outright thinking the Cons aren't worth the time. But unfortunately, I only have two shelving units, both go on the Con shelf.

Sentinel in my view very clearly is an Autobot that went rogue and felt he alone could fix Cybertron's issues. The Decepticons were purely a vessel for him to accomplish his goals.

Lockdown is simple: whoever pays him the most gets his body of work. He has no allegiance in the sense of Autobots and Decepticons.

I didn't mean he wore the Decepticon sigil or anything. He didn't consider himself a Decepticon. But he was a Decepticon through his actions. Their very name is based on deception and Sentinel deceived all of his Autobot allies. Does that not make him a Decepticon in the purest sense?

Coming up next is WWII Hot Rod!

The process was a lot like Bumblebee - silver dry brushing, flat coat, and stuff like that. I did use flat black paint in spots for additional weathering, and I mixed some orange and red together to get an orange similar to the figure.

For fun, I thought I would paint just one half of sentinel for a before/after comparison. I overlapped both sides on the head and parts of the torso, and I haven't totally finished the one side, but here's a teaser for Sentinel:

If you want to look at it that way I can say Optimus is a Decepticon for how brutal he gets, worse than most of the Bayverse Decepticons.

Does anyone have a link to thread where I could follow that Sentinel, Bumblebee, and Blackout upgrade kit?

In the case of Lockdown, I don't consider him a bad guy. He fulfilled the "villain" role in the movie since he was taking on the "heroes." But he holds no allegiance. He does what he does because it pays. He doesn't allow himself the luxury of being good or bad. He just does what he's paid to do. He was only after Optimus and he had no interest in fighting or killing anyone else until they started putting up a fight. Then he went after them because they were getting in the way of his job. He does dirty work, but not because he's a bad guy

He would go on my villain shelf because I only sort them into two sides like you, and like I said earlier, I'm not gonna put a character on the same shelf as other characters that he fought against. If I ever build up enough figures that don't align with either side to warrant their own shelf then Sentinel and Lockdown will both go there lol. But as it is, they're both grouped with the bad guys/Decepticons

Well I suppose you're not wrong, but Optimus was always meant to be a hero in all of the movies while Sentinel very clearly was meant to be a villain

I honestly think both @AutobotAvalanche and @John TheDestroyer make good points.

Sentinel Prime is technically an Autobot because he never officially joined the Decepticons. He made it clear that he was not a Decepticon soldier under Megatron's command and was absolutely using the Decepticons to further his own goals.

That said, he is a traitor who is guilty of treason against the current leader of the Autobots, and was happy to work with the Decepticons to enslave humanity, rebuild Cybertron, and destroy the Autobots on Earth. You could make a case for him being an unofficial Decepticon, someone who was not a member of their organization, but who was affiliated with them. You could also say that he was an Autobot who attempted a coup, similar to Getaway who committed mutiny and stranded a dozen other Autobots to die.

When you start killing your former teammates just because you think they’ll stand in your way, instead of trying to convince them to brave your cause because you believe it’s for the betterment of your entire species, in my view you’re evil. Ironhide might agree with me, Sentinel Prime may not technically be a Decepticon, but he is definitely a bad robot.

I never once denied Sentinel Prime was a villain, I'm just saying "if you're good you're automatically an Autobot and if you're bad you're automatically Decepticon" is a really weird stance to take and doesn't take into account what the movie actually shows. What faction you happen to take up arms with does not determine what kind of person you are.

Haha not yet! Just that one Ironhide gun which was almost totally OK. Thanks for the complement! Here's a pic of actual challenger with the elbow mod. I'm very happy with it:

Ever seen the third Indiana Jones? Sentinel is Walter Donovan, the American guy who was working with the Nazis. He wasn't a Nazi, but he was a bad guy who decided to use other bad guys to try and achieve his goal, which was getting the holy grail. If "autobot" is the allies and "decepticon" is the nazis then this guy fits Sentinel's role perfectly. He would never say he was a nazi, but he did work with them in pursuit of the same goal, and he was definitely a bad guy.

As for shelving, I would definitely put Sentinel on the "bad guys" shelf, but I would not consider him a decepticon just cause he was a bad guy. In fact, didn't he play a role in founding the Autobots? Or is that never actually explained in any of the comics or anything? Lockdown frankly deserves his own awesome shelf with him and some shadow raiders and some attack dogs :D

I was kind of on the fence if I should take the time to paint up all the little details on my Sentinel or not, but I think you just convinced me

Honestly hope future movies give personality to the decepticons like this. Imagine decepticons that aren’t just bloodthirsty killers, but rather just following orders and wouldn’t kill wounded Autobots.

    Glad I could help! xD

Painting Sentinel is really fun, I just have to get some acrylic thinner because the brighter red I got shows every brush mark and just looks really splotchy, although the picture doesn't pick that up too well.

    Good luck in your painting!

I agree with the sentiment of your example but IIRC when Donovan turns to dust it's revealed he was carrying a Nazi badge all along. Unless I'm misremembering.
