I’m in for ‘84, the only IDW I’ll have seen since the old continuity ended. The plot inconsistencies are a bit odd, hopefully they won’t be ignored.

You guys would save yourselves a lot of time and energy arguing if you just read the article:

"One of the missing bits of Cybertronian story I really wanted to get into was something alluded to by Megatron in Marvel’s Transformers #1 (story page 4, panel 3), namely the notion of rebuilding Cybertron as a (mobile) cosmic dreadnought. It’s never really followed up on in the Marvel series, but we really get into it here (and, in fact, forms the backbone of Secrets & Lies). And yes, here’s Skyfire – the name given to Jetfire in the animated TV series. I know what you’re thinking, Jetfire was created on Earth, in Transformers (US) #11… or was he? Maybe… he pre-existed on Cybertron, as in the cartoon series (where, as here, he functioned as a scientist), and was re-created."

You know what I would dig in a unified G1 continuity...?

You could have Dynobots on Cybertron ala War Within, Marvel (where Swoop at least was a jet)...

... And then Wheeljack could create them on earth like the cartoon from "spare parts".

But those spare parts could belong to the deactivated (or still active) Dynobots and use a pirated creation matrix created by Wheeljack, which is flawed.

Then we could have Marvel's "smart", dangerous Grimlock active on Cybertron as a Dynobot and Wheeljack's dumb Frankenstein creations.

And then maybe you have the Dynobots escape prison, scan the dumb Dinobots, and take their place covertly.

Likewise, maybe you could have a continuity with Shockwave the mad ambitious genius and Megatron has him locked up and replaced with a docile clone made for him by Straxus. (Or vice versa. The real Shockwave is a toadie and Straxus replaces him quietly.)

The idea of some characters having two distinctly characterized versions is unavoidable but I like the idea of finding a way to have them coexist.

The bigger problem as I see it is that Marvel continuity is ALREADY convoluted so complicating it is putting a lot of wear on a taxed engine.

I'd RATHER have G1 cartoon as the template and flesh it out by adding layers of complexity to it.

Like I say: the Dinobots were made from spare parts. Whose? Enter the Dynobots, a team of criminals who crewed the Ark during the Age of Expansion!

Let Shockwave be a toadie then introduce his ambitious doppelganger inbetween S2 and TFTM. Maybe Shockwave is such a great toadie that Megatron tasks a G1 Animated style Straxus with making more. At first, we get the green and purple Shockwave clones seen in Season 3 but then one is smarter and more ruthless. He dissects the original and takes his place between Season 2 and TFTM before evolving into the rival warlord to Galvatron known as Cryotek! (Cryotek, BW Megatron's boss, started as a Blue Shockwave.)

I'm probably scratching the continuity itch too much but one idea I played with is that BW Megatron is Straxus himself. Most of BW Megatron's backstory is far from definitive (his obscure career as a tank named Gnashteeth?) whereas we know Straxus in most continuities is obsessed with impersonating G1 Megatron (and possibly by extension Galvatron).

So you have a bit more leeway when introducing a G1 Animated Straxus.

My rough idea for an expanded western G1 canon is that Galvatron has a truce with Optimus after something like The Rebirth, a truce which Scorponok and others don't honor. And then Straxus becomes G2 Tank Megatron to usurp Galvatron's command and rally an army before undergoing a reformat into a T-Rex to gain the backing of the Tripredacus.

Meanwhile, real Galvatron, frozen, is revived as Super Megatron while Powermaster Prime gets upgraded to Stellar Prime (Star Convoy).

I think it's fun to ask what would have happened if the Sunbow writers had their own cartoons supporting late G1 and JG1 toys that follow from The Rebirth and end up leading into a Sunbow hand drawn Beast Wars with Floro Dery character models.

If you gave Marv Wolfman and Gerber and Marty Pasko (RIP) and David Wise and all the Sunbow people the post-Headmasters toys and they kept writing with no JG1 cartoon or manga as reference and with every toy getting a U.S. release, what stories would they tell?

I\'ve been on a marvel kick lately so I\'m actually looking firward to this. Even if it doesn\'t turn out to be good, I\'m just really enjoying seeing guys like Megatron, Ratbat, Shockwave and Razorclaw in their original colours. Also deluxe Insecticons- yay!

Also, like how the Constructicons existed on Cybertron four million years ago in the cartoon then had their Earth mode bodies built for them on Earth.

I’m really looking forward to getting these. Continuity issues be damned. This looks like it will be a proper Transformers story with transforming Cybertronians in a civil war.

    Thank Primus!

I\'m really not sure how much I care about yet more revisiting of the marvel era transformers. I just feel like they could do something more interesting with same basic idea, like finishing Dreamwaves stories. They could do some sort of multi issue finale to Transformers ongoing using the unused outlines for where it was gonna go.

Finally a comic from IDW that is actually readable! :)  They should have brought Simon back a long time ago. Cool to see that assault - Deluxe Insecticons, Coneheads, Triple Changers and Battlechargers, after all they did remain on Cybertron for a while. And yay, Ratbat! Nice to see the team leaders like Razorclaw and Snaptrap being present too. Great art by Guido as well, looks a lot like Wildman's work. Though, not sure how this will align with Marvel continuity with Jetfire being a Decepticon - in Marvel he was created on Earth by the Matrix. Maybe Simon decided to split the character in two? After all in the cartoon he was called Skyfire - maybe this guy is not Jetfire, just looks like the robot Shockwave will build later on Earth.
I wonder also who the guy between G2(?) Hook and Starscream is.

LOL, I theorized the same thing myself without reading it. Thanks!
And I love the whole Warworld idea, because it's something that nicely aligned with Simon's later Primus origin, that Cybertron could fly in space. The War Within also used the idea of Cybertron having thrusters, and of course, later Megatron (thanks to Bludgeon) did get his own Warworld.

Indeed. Not endless moping and talking while nothing happens... which is what the current comics are.

I'd love that too, but they can't. It's been discussed and asked of Simon and Ryall a lot. They do not have the rights. Blame the haunting spirit of Pat Lee... He still doesn't want to relinquish the rights. But if you are curious, Simon posted the planned issue synopses for both War Within Vol3 and Energon on his blog. It's up on the TF Wiki too.

Yeah, I could see that happening. But later Marvel stories make it an important element of his personality that he has no memories of Cybertron, for him Earth is his home. There was a rather nice Christmas story with him and Buster about it. I think rather what will happen is that Shockwave simply builds his new warrior in his image because he knew him or found him effective.

Ah so it is him! I think Simon or someone did use him before when they needed a Decepticon scientist.

Surprised they managed to get him back! As I heard they approached him a lot - even during DW - and he was too much busy with drawing ads to come back.

He already was, in the TF'84 one-shot that this is a prequel to.

Yay, Venom!! The most underused Incecticon.

Also woo, more Punch/Counterpunch. Hoping to see Flywheels back again.

Hopefully mr. Furman will mention the Autobot memory crystals that were used by Optimus Prime to create copies of Smokescreen, Tracks, etc, when dealing with the Earth-bound versions of \"Skyfire\" and \"G2 Hook\". I also hope that Furman will imply that this \"personality copy\" procedure works only if the Creation Matrix is involved as well, and that it\'s an unethical procedure (hence Shockwave\'s abuse of this method), usually deprecated by the Autobots but accepted as an extreme misure during war time.

Anyway, looks like I'm going to purchase both the single issues and the tradepaperback, after ignoring years of IDW productions since Maximum Dinobots (except Scioli's maxiseries and Regeneration One).

it's a major stretch but it could be used in some sort of future storyline to explain the clones in the g2 / machine Wars universe.

Interesting idea. Hopefully this miniseries will allow Furman to stick around for some continuity-connecting experiments.

If you're even MORE curious some enterprising fans actually drew and coloured the last three issues of War Within 3, I assume based on that synopsis. All the pages are up on DeviantArt. They're terrifically well done considering it's a fan-community effort. I now consider that story complete.
