Always liked the DOTM Megatron concept and wanted it as a toy. Never had a chance to buy the Voyager version, which was very good in my opinion. When the Studio Series came out, I was pretty much disappointed with how this figure looked. Gappy as hell, really strange (or completely wrong) transformation and rubbish paintwork. I was pulling off the purchase a couple of months. I almost passed it, but then I saw some interesting repaints of this figure. Decided I will one myself. Think it came out pretty well, at last it’s better than it was out of the box. As soon as I started to paint it, it turned out, that the mould has quite a lot of nice details. Of course I had to do something about those terrible looking wheels (I mean those 3 large holes spoiling the look of each wheel). No idea why Hasbro is doing this for most of the SS figures. Guess it’s cheap. This is one of the main reasons I pass a lot of SS figures. OK, so here it is. I spent definitely too much time and money on this project, but I am quite satisfied with the results:
Those wheels really bring out the vehicle mode and that paint job takes this to another level. Amazing job!
Thanks guys for Your comments. I am really happy You like it, as it took me a lot of work. For rust effects I used a rust deposit set from AK Interactive (AK4110) plus rust streaks effect (AK013). I generally used a lot of AK paints and pigments on this project, as I have a lot of them left, after making some other (not TF) models. If You are interested in AK products, you can check their website. They have quite a lot of various weathering products. You can download their product catalogue, which contains some examples of use and quick tutorials.
Masterful work mate! This is truly a work of art. I just adore the little details, as they really make the whole piece perfect... Just excellent! On a side note: I'm with you on these studio figs...standard retail Transformers are getting very expensive, and their quality is not there... I mean between the poor cost cutting of the materials, lack of paint apps, and just no accuracy to some of their characters, it's all so discouraging. All I can say is, ARGH!
This is absolutely fantastic - have you seen the 3P upgrade kits that fill in the back of the truck cabin? I've been meaning to pick one up but haven't pulled the trigger since shipping from China to the US has been so screwy lately....
Thanks. I didn't know about the upgrade set. Do You mind to share a link? Initially I wanted to make some filler part myself, but i found out that the hollowness of the back of the truck mode is actually sort of accurate. That's what I found on YouTube:
Whoa. 115 Workshop YYW-05 YYW05 Upgrade Kit for Studio Series SS34 Megatron Upgrade Kit. is one set, there's another one on ebay from a couple of sellers.
Did you 3d print the tires yourself, of was it an upgrade kit. If it is upgrade, where can I buy my own?
I planned to buy 2 sets of these model kits for the wheels: Unfortunately found only one available. I used it for semitrailer wheels, also took the tanker markings from it. To get wheels for the truck I also bought two sets of these, so the mod got quite more expensive than I planned:
@doomtron Thanks. I had to paint it, because it looked absoutely terrible out of the box . Talking about the evasion Prime, I was considering doing the repaint, before I found the Takara "damaged" version. It looks good enough for me, but I'm still tempted to do some tweaks to make it even better.
