even inspecting the artwork from a trading card the eyes don't look out of place... weirdly enough
If we go by this image the eyes are suppose to be near the middle mandibles not above the manibles like the CGI render shows...wonder which one the movie uses and which one is based on concept art

 

That is still way too far down. I think the trading card art is exaggerated. The box art clearly shows his eyes farther up on the head where we all assumed they should be.

 

So why did they bother adding four holes and the bottom posts?

Spoiler: Before I checked the box in-hand...

Why do the bottom holes exist if they aren't eyes? They would otherwise be filled in as part of the front half of the face, with only two posts for the upper eyes.
Plus, if we're going by the box art, then he should have blue eyes. They had to be looking at TLK trench for reference since he has two eyes lit up in the film and CAT commercial, which seems like an attempt to make the face more friendly.

It's easy to just ignore lighting the bottom set, add blue color to the top set, and call it an autobot since it looks less alien.
The best place to get a reference is from the movie stills, but they're all hard to see. The concepts and comics are all a bit off.
I wish we had better images of this guy from the movie, or one where he isn't looking down. I swear there's faint red glowing effects for all four eyes in the still and the cgi turntable below. It just fits the insect/alien look they were going for at the time.

Edit: Now that I look at the box again in-hand, it does look like he has vents instead of eyes, complete with a yellow bar splitting the holes. Maybe the bottom posts are meant to give the vents some depth. I might be painting the bottom "eye" posts black or yellow now.   You were right, Moy. I could just be seeing things with such low quality images.
Either way, all that matters is that the figure exists and we enjoy it.

Scrapper now has two eyes! I didn't glue it so it was easy to change. Went with black to match the torso.

 

Ok, I have a question. Do you guys think there will be a reprolabels set for SS Devastator when he's done?

 

I hope so I want all the windows to match

 

Unfortunately toyhax seems to not care about SS really so who knows. One with all of the branding and insignias would be really great though, as well as the aforementioned windows.

 

Shame optimus could use some

 

They did make sets for the first SS Prime as well as BB Prime I think, you might be able to finagle something with the earlier set.

I just really want them to add some white. I really miss all the white on Devastator, like on Scavenger’s arm, Hightower’s cab, or the stripes

 

Some white does go a long way!
