I used to transform Galvatron into cannon mode, sweep the arms straight back and leave off the orange barrel.

The chrome ring around Galvatron's neck, combined with the yellow-orange led effect, was enough like Unicron's maw to tide over six-year-old me.

I'm sure the Sail Barge also put a huge bad precedent for Star Wars figures...wait...it didn't since it's only for a very niche group. :)

Even though I'm not a fan of giant multi-hundred-dollar Transformers, I cannot fathom how the existence/creation of a toy "sets a bad precedent" of any kind.

Surely more Transformers existing is a good thing, even if those Transformers aren't ones I personally own.

It's not like Hasbro is going to move to only making giant globes for half-a-grand from now on.

You mean Hasbro isn’t just transitioning the Transformers Brand into a premium relaunch of Rock Lords?!

I showed my wife the new pics of Unicron… the pic on the counter in planet mode and the scale pic next to the cat sent my wife reeling. "That is way too f***ing big!"
Oh well for her... it's paid for, and slowly chugging it's way through the bowels of Hasbro/Takara's factories!

Side note, I'm really curious about Hasbro's future use of the molds, since the legal rights page gives Hasbro unlimited use of the mold for future releases. Would love to see this in the clear black & green, but not for $600.

Legalese to cover any future uses, but highly doubt there's any future plans for it.

My wife thought the unicron pics were adorable.. especially with the cat. although she seemed giddy at the thought of our cats playing with Unicron and potentially breaking him. I think she might feed on my suffering or something...

My son-in-law is a huge fan of Magic the Gathering and other table games. I never have the first clue what he's talking about. If I ask explanations the ramblings will never end so I nod accordingly and move on. It's become a conditioned response.

My wife's cat is 25lbs. He's damn near unicron the way that fat cat eats... Hmmm... there's an idea... maybe I should photoshop Gordo into Unicron.

I actually did know what he was talking about (at least in broad scope. I didn't pay attention to the actual hubbub), but I knew a large portion of us wouldn't.

Gimme five bees for a quarter you’d say! Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time...

    It's impressive because:
    1) The planet mode is actually spherical and looks almost exactly like the cartoon, which is great and something the previous Unicron toy did not even attempt to do.
    2) Some of the iconic transformation parts are there (the arms folding to make the rear of the planet, etc)
    3) The robot mode, backpack aside, does a very good job of looking like the original cartoon as well.
    ... at the very least.

Barring either thousands of little transforming parts, or morphing parts that turn from curved to straight lines, this is probably about as close as we can hope to the original design, given that that was never intended to have an accurate transformation.

Zeta, for example does not look as good in either mode.

Completely disagree with @NGW , but I disagree about Zeta. Apart from asymmetric patterns, the figure itself in robot mode is superior. All that really lets it down is the collar. The planet is nowhere near as good as HasLab, although the add on panels help a lot.
I backed HasLab, but I can't argue that the backpack and leg covers are poor compared to Zeta. HasLab is for display in planet mode or robot mode from front on. Zeta is for dynamic robot mode posing.

Not even going to get into scale. I won't buy Zeta because I collect MP only (and have their same sized combiners). Except for HasLab, because of the size. I'd get a OSKO of Zeta in a heartbeat to have him tower over all other figures, with the epic HasLab planet mode alongside.

Why can't people stop trying to say one is better than the other and just accept that both are good for different reasons? Why does everything in this fandom have to be a pissing match?

Agree on your points. In fact, Back kibble doesn't bother me because it's become standard on all transformers at various price points. They even incorporate it into the cartoons now. Disagree on Zeta. Really like it, other than size. Still getting it.

Both are awesome. I'm using Haslab for planet mode (and probably to transform) and Zeta will be towering over my MP display, looking down upon the masses. Scale doesn't matter for me as much in this case, because there really isn't anything to pose with Unicron. Both will look fantastic on display.

Totally this, 100%. It's insane, and pissed my wife off royally, but I bought both. Hastak Unicron had to be supported, because it's been something I've demanded from Hasbro since 1986. A huge, towering Unicron that has no equal. Yeah, it's not as tight as Zeta, but it's official, it's historical, and an amazing attempt. Compared to the Armada/Universe Unicron, this Siege version is untouchable. Zeta/1Studio is equally impressive, but for different reasons. It manages to take a ball and make it a humanoid with clever engineering. It's smaller, so it's easier to interact with other transformers and toys. Everyone expected Unicron to start appearing via the 3rd party lines sooner or later, so Zeta going first for a decent price gives a lot of people an "in" without having to go full Haslab. Also, 1Studio is expected to be out 6 months+ before the Haslab, so it's a good figure for those that lack patience as well. I bought Transform Element while I was waiting for MP44. Love both of them.

Who knows? I might end up selling Zeta/1Studio once Fanstoys announces their 4 box 6ft tall Unicron after Maximus comes out. ;)

    Nail on head!

Thought all that was left behind in 2019, though fanboys are a special breed....
