Flipping through the car/ride thread got me thinking about things. For starters, my own ride. (I don't drive, although that is gonna change soon) For the record, I don't plan to buy anything yet before that is done, as this is just for future ideas only. :)

That said, what would you guys recommend? I am looking for 80s and 90s sports cars only for now.

Agree with the above mentions but also see: Dodge Stealth or the Mitsubishi 3000GT, Nissan xz300, Camaros and Trans Ams, and to a (much) lesser extent the Chevy Berettas and the Dodge chargers.

That highly depends on what you're specifically wanting the sports car for. You want it to haul ass like there's no tomorrow in a straight line? Or do you want to have a car that can haul ass around turns? Or a mixture of both?

    Very nice!

Agreed as well. I always liked the Trans Am. What specific year model would you recommend?

Probably one that can make turns. Straight lines are fun and all, but not all roads are equal. :lol

Well, if that's the case, then I'd suggest something like this car:

    ITR.jpg

Or a Civic Type R, or any imports where road courses are their specialty. I'm a little biased with the JDM Honda Integra Type R though :p

While my vote would be for the Trans Am or more specifically........Trans Am gta, Formula or Turbo Trans Am. Problem is, by today's standards, they are pretty pedestrian in power (excluding TTA). They are however, probably the best handling of any other generation Firebird. I had an 89 Trans Am gta, only year 3rd gen that could be had with t-tops and a 350. Although only with a auto trans. Best of both worlds is an LS swapped 3rd gen imo. Crazy power levels and great handling but it's not cheap. If I could do it all over again and for what a clean 3rd gen costs, it's honestly better to just buy a clean 4th gen.

As awesome as a lot of these suggestions are - and they are awesome - they’re a bit impractical for first cars.

Nothing wrong with having a goal, but just get something that runs and repairs cheaply to start off with and build tour driving experience with. That way by the time you get the car you want, you’ll be able to drive it with confidence and joy.

Yeah but KITT was an early Trans Am, 82 I believe. That style could be had until 84.

85-89 Trans Am or gta's had ground effects with fog lights in the front bumper.

    I always wanted a 91-92 Formula 350 (a lotta people don't like those years)

I couldn't find one so I settled and bought the black gta.

I can't recommend much from the late 1980s that isn't a muscle car or a weird but awesome ride (Merkur XR4ti, anyone?). OK, maybe a 300ZX or some version of RX-7, but those aren't going to be cheap. The power from any comparable ride within the past fifteen years will make all of those lovely pieces seem quaint, by comparison.

Getting into the 90s, you have some interesting options. VR6 VWs, MR2s, they all have some lovely features, but they are not inexpensive, either, though they still have a reasonably strong following and parts supply. Some would recommend an NB Miata is all you'll ever need, but that kind of depends on you.

Haha I think "good 80's sports car" technically counts as an oxymoron. The decades on either side of it had some GREAT sports cars, but 99% of the 80's? Eww, no. The 80's did a lot of things right but cars weren't one of them.
