How can a casual fan make "an effort to pursue it" when it is a story they don't even know exists? You really think there's a large group of casual fans who simultaneously (1) are aware of and want an obscure story only told in comics read by <15k people per month to be used in an upcoming TF movie; AND AT THE SAME TIME (2) can't be bothered to engage with those stories in that medium?

Who are these people that are aware of this storyline (which I agree with you, is tired, but I own all of the IDW books) but haven't read the comics, and are now wanting that storyline "SO BADLY"? How do they know this storyline exists?

I'm very much the odd one out. I think I saw part of Toy Story, but I was a freshman in high school when that came out. Pixar, Harry Potter, and such from that era missed me, and I don't have kids. And as a kid I thought disney was princess stuff, so I've never seen most of the famous disney stuff either.

I admit it's hypocritical of me to make fun of it. And I have no doubt it's better than all of the TF movie storylines.

I was referring to the "hardcore fans" the person I was talking to was describing. According to that user there are a lot of fans who know about this story and want to see it told, and this user's justification is that they haven't been able to see it before. They haven't once encountered it in the last decade, but at the same time it's something "a lot of people have wanted for a long time" as they said. I wasn't talking about casual fans.

Nice choice of director for the prequel movie. Hopefully it'll end up having the prequel be the next Bumblebee when it comes to being good. As for the story itself while I would normally say how it's the same type of story we've seen in past TF series some here made good points about how the GA doesn't know about Optimus and Megatron's past before the great war. So it's not like they're literally remaking the Sunbow pilot. Especially when Bumblebee's movie already established arriving on Earth/blending in thing for the reboot series. If it ends up being among the most powerful TF stories out there then that's a good thing.

Ahh, understood. That number of hardcore fans is probably <30-40k in the entire world.

Agreed, we're a marginal bunch overall so telling this story would at least be fresh for a general audience even if I dislike it. I was just trying to articulate that "well the hardcore fans haven't heard the Prime/Megatron story" is a bad justification because if you're someone who really loves that idea, not interacting with some form of it in the last ten years is your fault and not the franchise's for apparently not making it accessible enough.

If you tightened up Exodus, removed all the errors etc it could make a pretty good basis for a movie script. Best parts are the pre-war scenes with Orion Pax interacting with Megatron on friendly terms

I'm not a fan of any of the live action movies. I hope they don't try to replicate that look in animated form.

Yup, we're 100% not understanding each other, and the point I'm trying to make keeps going over your head. Just forget it because it's too damn frustrating talking to you about this.

Despite me not liking Toy Story 4, I think this director is a really good choice. Toy Story 4 looked fantastic. Sometimes the toys looked almost photoreal. The textures and lighting were gorgeous. For me one of the best aspects of Bumblebee's opening was the lighting on Cybertron. Seeing that yellow glow from the core combined with the dark blue of the sky was gorgeous. I hope they go for that look here too.

The choice of director makes me hope this movie will go for a somewhat realistic look. I doubt it will be as photoreal and detailed as Bumblebee's opening, but maybe it will be a step above the average animated movie.

I'm a little surprised that a lot of people in this thread didn't like Toy Story 4; I really loved it.

I'm less surprised that they're going to be using the "Optimus and Megatron were old friends backstory" that we've had for over a decade. I don't think it's the best backstory for the two characters, but I think that's largely because I've never seen it executed well before. In the films it was basically non-existent, and I don't think it was done much better in Transformers: Prime. IDW2 has shown some potential, but the character work in that series isn't the greatest. Hopefully this movie can take that backstory and really make it click in a way that it hasn't before. I'm optimistic that the talent behind this film can pull it off and make it feel genuine rather than artificial.

Also I think Garry Chalk voicing a younger Optimus could be pretty cool, especially if they go in the (admittedly unlikely) direction of Orion Pax: Supercop.

And even though Exodus prides itself on supposedly being the first tell-all about OP and Megs, there’d been plenty of fiction about it before Hasbro started its united front and attempt at a single canon.

I read that G1 Marvel comics had them both as gladiators representing their respective cities-states.
"Gladiatorial Games were commissioned between the city-states to increase good will as the planet's population outpaced its resources. Optimus Prime was the gladiator champion of Iacon, and he shared a sporting rivalry with a young champion from Tarn called Megatron".

So Deadline says it's not connected to the Live-Action movies, but Hollywood Reporter says it is connected to them, I think I might just go with Deadline on this one.

I'd go with Hollywood Reporter. Deadline said the same thing about a Star Wars show last week...that it would be set in an alternate reality from the regular Star Wars timeline. That seems unlikely, and the general consensus seems to be that it was just a misunderstanding on their part. I kind of wonder if that's the same case here. Maybe someone at Deadline doesn't fully grasp the difference between a different timeline and an earlier time period.

Then it wouldnt be a prequel. The report says its a prequel which means its based before something we've already seen. Most likley Bumblebee as it makes the most sense.Plus a movie based on cybertron would only set things up for another story, otherwise you arent doing it right.

On one hand, we got one of the most infamous Godzilla movies ever made. On the other hand, we got the awesomely written Godzilla: The Series. I feel conflicted.
