You know, the amount of people wanting completely original designs kinda shows how little TF fans care about characters and just want cool robots. Like, what if they completely changed Batman? Imagine it as just some guy who puts on a ski mask and people think it’s a bat or if he was a techno organic mech suit. That would piss fans off. I mean look at how pissed Godzilla fans got about the 1999 one changed up his design a ton. I don’t see how staying true to a characters design is just thrown into the default “it’s Geeewuuun” bucket.

While I am ok with new designs, I'm also ok with the approach Hasbro is taking right now design-wise.
Also, wtf does this fandom expect Hasbro to do?
Michael Bay literally recieved death threats for how different his character designs were because "iTs rUinIn mEy cHildHUd". After that shitshow of a response that still continues to this day, if I were Hasbro I would probably stick more traditionaly inspired designs too!

This is why we can't have nice things.

Save for two, those aren't really radical redesigns. They all scream "batman".

Notice they all have a cowl, cape, bat symbol, utility belt, white eye lenses, boots, gloves/gauntlets, dark in color and are a skin tight suit. All variations on the same original design.

But will they actually take that chance? If it's always been the same thing over and over (and it has), what are the odds that this time is going to be any different as opposed to yet another rehash?

Once again, there is no problem with it being a rehash because the only people who read the comics and books are such a small minority. Most people don't know how it all went down! It will be the first time the story is told in the medium of film!

Sure, it certainly helps that the artist's drawing style blends them all together aesthetically.

I get where you're coming from, I just saw your Batman example and thought...Batman's actually been redesigned quite a bit through the years.

I'm also late to the topic, was someone calling for completely redesigned characters to the point of being new characters?...Kinda like old Barry there in your avatar.

I’m hoping it’s because they’re bringing in talent who are willing to be more original and are here to create a new story. And because we have a Netflix show and comic with such similar origin premises that they’ll steer clear of repeating it. Honestly, idk.

If it works, great. If not, I'm used to the movies being a letdown. Me, personally, I think we could let the franchise rest for a bit and come back with some fresh minds/fresh material, but if they're going to go for it, go for quality.

That's all well and good, but I'm explaining why I'm personally not getting excited for this thing. Also, if the idea of Optimus and Megs as BFFs gets exposed to a general audience, it's going to be that much harder to get rid of. And I am really not looking forward to that.

A good amount of people have been calling the ever so popular “geeewun eeew” card. Apparently basing things off the original designs is a bad idea now despite it working for all the other companies. So yeah, a bit like my barricade pic, who I’m fine with because he was essentially a unknown character no one knew about before. He actually strangely got redesigned to fit a g1 aesthetic recently which was cool. I personally just don’t think whining on about how it looks like the source material should be our focus. How about we focus on wanting an actual good story?

Well, the only thing I can say to that, and everyone else complaining about this is this.

And I will leave it at that because this just frustrating.

Rewind is the poster child of the IDW comics, next to Chromedome.

To add on to that, if no one strived to make new designs and stories, we wouldn’t have ended up with what makes this franchise what it is. Characters from Animated, Beast Wars, and Prime barely resemble their original counterpart, so I don’t understand how striving for originality makes me any less of a fan.

If they could just do away with the backstories they seem obsessed with having in every continuity lately and try a new angle on their relationship.

Hopefully, when they say animated, the art style is more in line with Bumblebee’s opening sequence and not cartoony.

With the movie being completely on Cybertron, I’m also hoping that means that the robot war doesn’t take a backseat to a Lifetime Channel movie like in Bumblebee.

I mean it depends on how "Geewun" they go with it. Like the designs in the BB movie, I would not call those "G1" designs, so much as heavily G1 influenced.

As for "good story"...I donno if that's ever really been a thing for Transformers, objectively. It's all kind of been more of stories made up of cool concepts and memorable moments, but then if you step back and look at it all in context it's an absolute mess...But I say that as someone who has completely fell out of love with Transformers as a fiction,(I'm just here for the toys.) so really one could disregard my stance overall anyway.
