Seriously, I'd buy a Japanese print repo box like this with a HMR faster than I would anything else. I'm guessing the retro bug never hit Japan like it did here...
Are these really that bad? I saw the price and I figure they might be worth messing around with. My kids love to gawk at my higher end collectibles. So I wouldn't have problem with them handling these either.
Not worth it. They aren't built to last. I was careful with both of mine and polycaps on both cracked as well as the sockets for the stands.
Any of you see this awesomeness? MASSIVE Vintage 1985 Matchbox ROBOTECH SDF-1 PLAYSET complete with vehicles neat | eBay Pricing is bidding nuts after a couple of days. He’s gut a Lunk figure as well if anyone is looking for that rarity.
The problem is that Toynami didn't use CAD to design the toys so they couldn't just upscale them. So we got the mess we got. They were also supposed to be 30% diecast and they were more like 5% diecast if that.
@Hellbot to give you an idea... the Toynami 1/100 VF-1 came out 15 years ago (ish) and sold for $20 each. They weren’t bad at that price, but poor plastic quality meant they wouldn’t have very long shelf life even if you didn’t handle them much. I picked up one way back when, and it wasn’t bad for the price, but it only made it a few years as a desk toy before it fell apart. I wound up using glue on it to keep it together in fighter mode for a while. It looked nice on the shelf. Anyways, these are the exact same figures, but now for some reason people are paying $50+ for them.
They definitely aren’t worth today’s price. I bought the 30th Anniversary figures when they were first released, I believe it was $100 for the four, having no idea what the quality was as they were my first Robotech purchase as an adult, and was shocked when I received them at the quality. As has been mentioned, the stand sockets will explode on you upon use, the arm sockets crack right away if they aren’t already cracked out the box, and they are simply really lightweight, flimsy toys. $50 is absurd, but you have to hand it to Toynami’s ability to sell packaging. out of collector compulsion I ended up buying the trainer, Max 1-J and Ben Dixon sets, as well as fast packs for Max, Miyria, Roy and Rick, later during ebay flash sales to have a complete set, but despite how many I have I can’t recommend them. As my collection grows, having the Arcadia’s, Bandai DX, Kitz Concept and even a Hi-Metal, I do consider selling these off, and I may do so when I have a set of the 7 styles I want in one of those scales, but for now my compulsion finds them necessary to keep. I actually do find a level of enjoyability to them, but that’s probably simply my love for Veritech toys more than them. But I probably wouldn’t feel that way paying $50 for one.
Smart move. These aren’t going to sell out so no need to feel you need to jump on them quickly. I was going to suggest buying a different character that they aren’t re-releasing on eBay for cheap to see if you liked it enough to spend $50 on the new ones, but checking ebay there doesn’t seem to be any cheap ones available. Maybe it’s time to start selling mine off.
Agreed 100% - even one HMR is worth more than 3 of those Toynamis. Time to trade up! And when I say "worth" I really mean not just monetary value but like, worth owning / playing with.
You inspired me to pull out the Toynami’s because, well, what else am I doing today? Already practiced a little baseball with my boy, played some video games, watched The Good, The Bad and The Ugly; may as well play with some toys. the first is the Toynami trainer vs the Hi-Metal and the second — Toynami, Kitz Concept and Arcadia. I paid $80 for the Hi-Metal trainer; no way is a Toynami worth $50 compared to it. but the second group is where you can really see the difference. Kitz Concept is easily worth the $110 price, but that Toynami looks like a vending machine toy compared to it. Two Toynami’s aren’t worth one KC.
I was hesitant to buy into KC, so I picked up the black and gold version first; figured if I didn’t like it at least it was different from any other VF’s I had so it would be worth having on that basis. I liked it enough to go ahead and pick up the 1S which is great; flawed but it’s visual presence makes up for it. I’m looking forward to getting 1J.
Same here. I got the Black and Red. Not worth it to me but I also don't regret it. I'll sit back and probably grab one of these new and improved ones at some point just to see how much better it is. Hopefully they do more in different decos because that is definitely a buying point for me. I got all the standard decos I need and still getting more with the Arcadia, HMR and DX lines.
I was trying to figure out where KC Valkyries would fit into my Macross collection when I realized that I don’t have much representation from... Macross. The one Macross show KC is able to do. (The only two TV Valkyries I have are an Arcadia Max and Milia’s 1J). trying to track down older V2 Yamato figures is not easy on the wallet, so I just decided I’d buy KC figures for my TV ones. If I like their 1J enough I might even get their Max and Milia even though I’ve got the Arcadia ones. I really want them to do well enough to keep releasing more figures. sure would be nice if things went well enough for them to do something with that 1/2000 scale TV SDF-1 prototype they showed off a few years ago.
