Well isn't it's unsurprising that you and i don't see eye to eye on something lol... The MAIN thing I love about the show is the design and animation, across the board, however I totally understand that the maximal designs are rather 'marmite' and I have a slightly contrary tendency to gravitate towards the unpopular. Aside from Nightscream (who's fine generally but giving him a Edward Furlong/John Connor 'hairstyle' and face was just dumb) I think they are some of the most innovative and stylish TF designs in the history of the line. I am sadden to this day that many of the toys didn't live up to the designs... and that we didn't get to see Transtech on the toy shelves. They perfectly embody the techno-organic theme of the show, they look like a perfect blend of the organic and the mechanical, simultaneous neither and both at the same time. I dream of a good set of figures to represent these guy, I actually think they'd lend themselves well to non-transforming action figures more than Transformers...which I guess is the only negative I see it them... they don't look like or transform like Transformers at all.... however again I'm pretty sure that's intentional.

Personally I'd love to have a shelf of figures that look like this:

    IMG_20200302_184544931.jpg

As for the show itself, I'm in broad agreement. I've just finished rewatching season 1 and... it's patchy very patchy, it's incredibly ambitious and I applaud that but it rarely 'sticks the landing'. Pretty much every character is at least partially inconsistent both within the show and with their character in Beast Wars and it is jarring, which would be fine if it were adequately rationalised/explained/communicated within the show bit it isn't. Instead the audience is left scratching it head and having to come to it's own conclusions... again fine if the storytelling and characterisation is on point... but it isn't it's confused and messy. The rather dark and adult themes of are often pitched badly and the maximals often come across as 'douchey' and deliberately obstinate... it's hard to like any of them, hardly ideas for the heroes. David Kaye referred Beast Machines 'the bad thing' when I handed over my DVD boxset for him to sign. I personally don't think it's bad, I think it's amazing that it ever happened, if anything it saddens me that it just wasn't executed right, because if it had been it could have been the best Transformers series of all time.

What’s the right or best dvd set to buy for beast wars in the uk? Don't know which one I should be getting.. would
Prefer a set that plays PAL but if there is another release that is close to
HD I could consider that also

I can see the appeal of the designs, but I'm personally not a huge fan. Maybe if they were animated differently, I might look at them more fondly, but the way they move in the show is just constantly uncomfortably awkward and unsettling. It distracts from everything a lot, and honestly I feel like it changes the impact of the delivery of the lines becaue they come from such an awkward source.

But this is purely subjective, so there's no real argument to be had. Glad you enjoy the designs, and I hope you get the toys you want!

Absolutely, I also thought the animation was really cool too...not getting any of the awkwardness you describe. Visually it was pretty awesome all round aside from the odd bit of lazy looped/reused animation(every time Megatron rages out and drops out of his cloak, or the swished bullet deflecting from Cheetor) and the fact that the backgrounds were minimal(again I think deliberately so). Horses for course I guess.

I glad to hear you are enjoying it! Art should be appreciated, even if I'm not the one to do it. For me, I see it in the way Cheetor's neck moves, or the way Primal's arms wave during combat, or anything about Rattrap's face.

    Everything about them feels wrong.

I suppose, for me all the 'awkwardness' comes form the characterisation and dialogue. The wild mood swings/total personality transplants most of them exhibit might be explained by trauma but mostly it feel forced and only there to service a slightly wonky and confusing plot that rides roughshod over established mythology. I don't hate it, I'm enjoying it, but thats where it falls down for me.

I'm aware we are going round in circles a bit(my fault for a change) and this is a toy thread. Essentially... yeah BM is great in concept if not execution. The designs, especially the Maximal ones are out there for sure as is the animation sometimes, however man oh man would I like some nicely done in scale BM figures.

I believe that's the KO of the 3D printed plans that were circling around a year or two before MP-Dinobot was issued.
