It's coming from the fact that this set includes the energon cubes buried in a compound that is the same color, making it super obvious what this paint is supposed to represent.

So, instead of "cr@pple-damage" silver paint, vomited over the toy, we've now got poorly airbrushed applications, making it look like it's been dipped in soy sauce?

Also, Rung looks like a cross between one of the ghost figures and proton-pack guns used in the "Real Ghostbusters" toys...

    Easy pass.

...Yeah, I'm not paying $60 for a pink Rung and more gray.

    Cancelling preorder now...

Not sure which one I like better.  The repaint of Rung is a bonus though.

I’d grab it on sale for Rung and his effects, but it’d have to be close to 50% off before I’d bite. Sucks to break my complete run on Battlemasters, but I can’t afford every damn redeco.

If he was Delta Magnus colours though, he’d have been bought instantly.

If the translucent pink had been carried over onto Magnus instead of just Rung I would have considered it. Painting half the main figure gunmetal does nothing for me unfortunately

This just brings out the fact this new UM looks to be actual white plastic this time, not the milky not-white plastic of the regular UM.

Yeah, the figure is using premium paint apps that reflect the NETFLIX series model. How many times has the fandom burned itself with our own made up hype?

Typical Lifecycle of a Modern Transformer
    1. Retailer Listing Stage
Discovery of a retailer listing with no pictures, no description and a 50% chance of a name tied to the product.
Fandom Reaction: Endless speculation on details on the product (size, paint apps, design style, gimmicks).
    Hype Level (0-10): 10
    2. Blurry Photo From Leaked Marketing Materials Stage
Leaked marketing materials shows up with photos of new figures but it's impossible to tell anything except general color composition of the figure because photos are super small and blurry.
Fandom Reaction: Endless speculation on details on the product (size, paint apps, design style, gimmicks).
    Hype Level (0-10): 9.75
    3. Official CGI Renders Stage
Hasbro, a retailer or someone else releases the CGI render of the figure used to promote the figure.
Fandom Reaction: Confusion because renders poorly convey what the figure will actually look in-hand. Some angry confusion. Some tempered confusion. Some anger. Some excitement.
Hype Level (0-10): 8 (confused happy fans) or 2 (confused angry fans)
    4. First Convention Appearance Stage
Hasbro shows up the figure for the first time at one of the big toy conventions.
Fandom Reaction: Is this a prototype because the colors are wrong. Oh no, these are the final colors! Maybe they're not the final colors!
Hype Level (0-10): 8 (patient fans) or 0 (inpatient fans)
    5. First Unofficial Photos Stage
Two quick snaps shots (with a crappy camera and poorly lit setting) of the new, final, boxed version.
    Fandom Reaction: It... looks okay.
    Hype Level (0-10): 7
    6. High End Photograpy FINAL STAGE
A collection of professional quality photos of the final figure in multiple angles and poses (properly transformed).
Fandom Reaction: Take my wallet, I want this now. Eh, I still hate it.
    Hype Level (0-10): 9

I would say this Ultra Magnus is at Stage 5 with a current hype level of 4. When it hits Stage 6, I predict the hype level will reach 8.

(Hype levels are just an average reaction of the fandom.)

Except if he had the putty on him, it should look like solid splotches and chunks all over him. This is an airbrushed gradient, which makes it look like shading or burn marks.

You can insist that all you want and be condescending to everyone all you want, but the final effect looks nothing like he's covered in that goop. The only way it makes sense with its appearance is if the stuff caused his paint/coating to become burnt. Even then, it's not something that's so obvious that you need to talk down to everybody about it.

Yeah. People can defend this all they want, but them hiding it and calling it a spoiler, in a line with Decepticon Mirage, made lots of people expect a "spoiler" set to include either a Magnus that has the cloak from the trailer, or a Decepticon version of Magnus (based on the SG version like the Rodumus Unicronus), which itself was based on Powered Convoy's colors.

Instead, we get a crappy gooped up one that looks like heavy shading or burn marks, and there are so many people who are insisting that people getting their expectations on this figure up, despite it being due to being compared to the rest of this line with its more realistic damage and more eccentric concepts (again, Decepticon Mirage), are just hyping it up based on nothing.

The best explanation for the black Play Doh I can come up with is that it's supposed to be "Energon waste"
from the planet dying. The stuff showed up in Cyberverse season 3, where Hot Rod says it's highly toxic.

Wow, you're correct and well informed.
I can't believe I found out that this box contained SPOILERS and willfully tried to avoid information about it until pictures showed up on the front page this morning.
I can't believe I didn't read what was listed as the box's contents some 50 pages back in this thread.
I can't believe I didn't just recognize the putty immediately -I mean, like every third Transformer has been packaged with putty since 1984, right?
I can't believe I didn't know that Magnus' poorly implemented color design was "obviously" the putty.

I apologize for all my varied deficiencies. I would list more of them, but I find I'm too deficient.

By all means, continue to extract joy from myself and everyone else who is disappointed and not nearly so learned.
    You've earned it!

I'd argue that we need better pictures.

After really looking at the pics, I'm kind of bummed about this. I was actually looking forward to a Magnus repaint (love the mold), but I really just don't like the deco. It works for Hotlink better, but the stark charcoal color on Magnus that replaces entire areas instead of enhances them just doesn't sit well with me.
I do like the Targetmaster, effect pieces and Energon cubes, but not enough to keep my pre-order. This is the first time I've cancelled a pre-order like this.
Oh well, the money I was going to spend on this will be put towards three of the Reflector repaints.
    Win/win.

when I look at them side by side, it definately makes me think one thing, wish I could isolate Ultra Magnus out of my preorder, but also I don't think Hasbro will ever be able to do this successfully again. I think the spoiler was Battlefield Rung, but even if that was the spoiler why hide Magnus too? We thought we were in for something really really special after looking at Hotlink and Megatron. I think you hit the nail on the head, they replaced areas instead giving us the dry brushed wear; especially the stacks. I think the better move would have been to get drastic with unarmored Magnus and go with lighter wear for the armor. Oh boy what will the fandom name him?

Im sure the whole deco is to say magnus dies in the end. I hope minimus ambus, agent of the tyrest accord picks up his armor.

Not even accurate to the show. Missing the red on his neck. 5/10 thanks hasblow.

Its amuses that the vehicle modes look like they have toxic energon splattered on them like they drove through it 20200330_191626.jpg 20200330_191813.jpg 20200330_191830.jpg
