The base material is just a piece of polystyrene packaging. The hills at the back were separate pieces glued on, and I used a kitchen blowtorch to add contours to the surface. You can use a lighter to do the same but it’s a lot slower. Also it’s frigging dangerous, if you accidentally set fire to the polystyrene put it out immediately otherwise the whole lot will go up, and potentially your house as well. You can add texture with a knife as well but it’s a lot rougher and takes even longer.

I used a Woodland Scenics starter pack for the grass and bushes. It came with a brown base coat to apply first, but like an idiot I neglected to spray primer on the polystyrene first, and it just soaked up the brown paint like a sponge. So instead I went and used a brown acrylic spray, which worked, but also needed a hefty load of primer first, as the acrylic paint dissolved the polystyrene.

Anyway after that I could just put down all the powdery grass stuff. The starter pack came with a bunch of different colours to vary things up, and it came out really well. It reacts well to messing with the hue slider on my phone’s camera filters, as it brings out the greens and browns as much or little as you like.

I like using Astrotrain’s launchpad as more of a mini airbase. 5100B274-C0FC-4C3C-8820-30E8B4F56F67.jpeg
