Got this guy finally. Alt mode is meh and I have to pull the arms out of his shuttle mode side scarily hard to transform him, so might leave him in bot mode. And why not when it’s this nice looking?

So I started collecting figures again back in 2016, where I bought CW Bruticus and basically had the mindset of wanting to build a minimalistic collection of fun figures. I never intended to build a display of full casts in the beginning. It was always the playability and the alt modes of transformers that appealed to me. In that way I guess my collecting goal differs from most people on these boards. When TR Blitzwing came out, I was super stoked as he looked like a super cool figure that had 2 nice alt modes and an awesome headmaster gimmick, and thus I bought him. Needless to say he was my only TR figure, but a lovely one at that. Being one of the very few new aquisitions at the time, he stayed on my desk for a while, until I started amassing newer figures.

I should add that I grew up with the movies, so I started going crazy when the studio series line was released. I kept battling with myself regarding my collecting philosophy, where I was not only buying the figures I liked, but I was also justifying a cast completion mentality. I think the act of buying figures gave me some sort of rush that didn't translate upon actually having the toy in hand. I ended up buying figures that I didn't want just because they would look nice when paired with others.

I hoped this mentality would stop after I finally completed my SS 2007 cast, but alas, it didn't. Not only was I buying the figures I truly liked, but I bought other figures that I thought would pair nicely with the "standalones" on a display, or figures that I was talked into either by specific individuals or just the general hype. Eventually it started to spiral a little bit out of control, and what was originally supposed to be a small handful of toys evolved into me hording figures from multiple lines. This wouldn't be so bad if I had enjoyed all the figures I bought, but after a brief honeymoon period I usually became frustrated with what I had bought. The law of diminishing returns started to kick in, and I really wasn't enjoying collecting anymore, but I still did it. Being a younger fellow, I have never sold a figure before, and was always afraid to pull the trigger in case I made a big mistake, so I never quite got around to selling. After a while, my frustration kept on building, and so did my collection. I think I've been vocal about that aspect a bit too much, and weirded people out along the way.

What really helped is that I started getting busier on real life. As a result, I slowed down on visiting places like tfw and I stopped thinking about buying transformers (that weren't a part of SS devastator). I'd look at the figures I had and I would pull one or two out from storage to fiddle with as I usually do. One day I decided to take out TR Blitzwing from the bottom of my bin (who at this point was mostly forgotten to me due to him being totally different to the horde of toys I had amassed by this point). I was reminded after messing with him about why I bought him in the first place, which was kind of a sobering moment for me. TR Blitzwing is something I wouldn't consider having on display considering how most of my collection was either studio series or siege (the big bright beige & purple mixed with the larger height doesn't help), but he was loads of fun to handle. I had him on my desk for weeks, constantly flipping him back and forth between modes and incorporating the headmaster was oddly satisfying. It brought me a kind of happiness that I hadn't felt in a while. It made me look at the rest of my collection and determine which figures meant a lot to me, and which ones were just there to be an addition. The figure reminded me of why I bought these toys in the first place - not to stress over building a grand display, but rather to have a neat little group of figures that brought me joy. The type of joy that's particular and dear to me.

Between the recent virus scare and the fact that I have my last CPA exam right around the corner, I've been putting off my purge. Once I have more time on my hands I plan to learn the ropes of eBay and finally sell the figures I want to get rid of. But between taking a step back and revisiting this figure, I've been able to see my goals with more clarity. Suddenly many upcoming figures aren't as appealing to me anymore, and while I still have a ways to complete my SS devastator, I think I'm nearing the point where I can put a pin through this whole gig.

I will say that if you're feeling like you're in a bit of a rut when it comes to collecting, I'd say take a step back and try not to think about toys or collecting for a while. After some time, maybe you might be able to look upon your collection with more clarity to distinguish the figures you do want from the figures you don't.

Thank you for sharing. That's sort of where I'm at currently and I'm trying to readjust what I'm collecting. Also, I hope you passed your CPA exam!

G1 Scourge today...

A common sight on EBay is G1 Scourge minus his head mounted disintegrator ray. Luckily, Titans Return provided a solution.

Titan Returns Scourge's hand held weapon fits perfectly on G1 Scourge's head as shown above and looks good there too.

Hear hear! I wasn’t going to get Hoist but he looks too good and I’ve never owned a Hoist before. I’m glad I bought him, he’s a nice change of pace. And colour palette!

My light keeps making his unpainted plastic look grey for some reason.
