    Thanks.
Once I actually have some money, I think I'll try Risky's Revenge on my PS4. It's only $10, so not too big of an investment.

I worked in the video game department at TRU back in 2003, and I remember passing by the original GBC game on the shelf countless times, constantly contemplating getting it. I wish I had now, considering the ridiculous prices it's going for these days.

    Got Risky's Revenge last night.
Didn't have much time to play it before bed, but...
Wonderfully animated sprite graphics + smooth action = a natural high

Ya gotta love that little butt-jiggle when she's crouching :D
Haven't seen butt-jiggle like that since Mai's crouching strong kick in some SNK fighters.

Still getting the hang of the "jump into the background/foreground" mechanic, though. Got stuck for a few minutes trying to find the exit from the first city because of that :p

I know a few obscure ones off the top of my head that are pretty good.

    Iconoclasts
Made by the same studio behind the Noitu Love games. Your main weapon is a large wrench.

Momodora 1, 2, 3, and Reverie Under The Moonlight
The first two games in this series are both short, but entirely free. You can get them here. The other two are available on Steam. Out of the four games, only the second and fourth ones are metroidvanias. However, I would suggest playing them in order.

    ICEY
Not a traditional metroidvania, but you do have to unlock skills that allow you to access new areas. I don't know how to explain it without spoiling anything. If you don't already know what this game is, it's absolutely worth it to go in blind.

    Just finished Shantae: Risky's Revenge.

I love the animation, design, and quirky humor (including references to older games like Simon's Quest and Contra 3).
The world itself just seemed a little...small. I know I shouldn't expect too much when it's a nearly 10-year-old $10 game, but it just didn't feel like there were many places to go. And it was too easy; I don't think I died at all, unless you count falling into a pit, which only seems reduce your energy a little.

This is a little gem of a game.

There are a lot of mechanics that I feel could have been expanded on, but for a game that was made by one guy over years of work, it's a solid experience. The best part of the game is the story.

Plus it has one of my favorite lines in any game I've played:
Agent Black: "Let us grieve existence, together."

Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth

Some may recognize Lodoss War as an older anime/manga

I've heard of Record of Lodoss War, but never watched it. This game looks cool, though.

    However...
Some of the main character's animations seem almost directly copied from Alucard in Symphony of the Night. The walk cycle, the way the cape falls during a crouch, the little "glide" before the walk animation starts...
    Looks very familiar.

    Infodump:
Record of Lodoss War started as an actual role-playing campaign between friends at college, then became a serialized text story, then manga, then console games and anime. The custom-made system used in the original game became Sword World, one of the leading tabletop roleplaying systems in Japan. Sword World's main setting of Forcelia includes Lodoss, but is much larger than just Lodoss. I guess Forcelia is to Sword World as Greyhawk is to D&D. Other parts of Forcelia have their own console games and anime as well (Crystania, Rune Soldier). Famed designer Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D) has done art for the Sword World rule books.

The game is acknowledged up front as being directly modeled on SotN, so it's derivative, but it's not plagiarism.

To quote Sparkplug: "Is there anything you DON'T know about?"
    :p

If it's modeled after SotN, then I want it, but it looks like it's only available on Steam. Guess I'll have to hope for a console release

Just came out, but it's in early access. I got it and it is awesome thus far, but just a small taste of the game that it will become.

I bought Blasphemous on PSN as a birthday present. I’m a sucker for good sprite animation, and I find the bleak hyper-religious theme fascinating. I like it so far, and it’s definitely not an easy game. Regular enemies have killed me a number of times. A lot harder than Bloodstained.

My only complaint so far is that it feels like it takes forever to get anywhere. The maps are huge and sprawling, and I have yet to find any sort of teleport rooms.

Blasphemous is great. Would've been cool if the areas were as big as Hollow Knight's. Hope the DLC's good.

I don’t know if this is something other Metroidvania players experience, but...

As I’ve mentioned in the What Are You Playing thread, I’m going through Hollow Knight right now. I felt like I checked every nook and cranny multiple times but there was a big empty space in the middle of my map. I knew I was missing something.

Naturally, there was an innocuous opening on my map that I had skimmed over many times and thought I had figured out it was a dead end. Turns out it was the opening I needed to open up the map. It feels like I encounter this in every game like this, where I explore everywhere EXCEPT the one easily-accessible place that helps me continue. ARRRRGH.
