Am I the only person who wished Megatron was always a tank?

Anything that isn’t a gun works, it was a stupid mode in the 80’s and it’s been stupid ever since.

Shockwave and SixShot only pull it off because they’re giant space guns not a primitive bang stick from Earth. You might as well have him turn into a damn spear or a bow and arrow.

I liked Megatron as a gun but the play style from its Microman Microchange heritage never was exploited in the G1 line. For example, Megatron's extra parts as manned artillery being manned by other figures just as the Microchange UNCLE could be by other figures.

Mobile artillery would be my preferred modern alt mode with figures like Battlemasters or Micromasters able to use Megatron as a battle station.

No, he should have been some sort of aircraft the entire time since the Decepticons were the fliers.

I am a big fan of the tank too, and prefer it.

One small thing, it was Transformers Generationn 2 that was the first to turn Megatron into a tank not Bayverse.

Heck, I'd love an incarnation of the character who just switches out his alt-mode on a regular basis, so when anyone goes against him toe to toe they really don't know what they're in for. I don't mean he's a six or eight changer (because I know some of you are going to make that assumption) I mean he reformats into a different alt-mode for every major battle he takes part in. Is he a tank this time? A jet? An assault helicopter? A stealth bomber? A spaceship? A giant gun? A bunch of smaller guns??? That would be a nightmare from a toyline perspective, but from a narrative perspective it's fitting that a warmongering character would have his alt-mode be the entire freaking army.

Is that from the latest Toyfair? Because those are probably painted resin prototypes and not indicative of the final product. The same thing happened with Sentinel Prime in Titan's Return. The painted prototype had a very fiery and vibrant orange-yellow while the retail toy was an ugly traffic cone orange.

You don’t need to have collected G2 toys to be aware of G2.

Doesn’t matter. The Decepticon leader had to be comparative to Optimus Prime in robot mode height, box size and price point.

I don't mind that Megatron used to be a gun, but I don't really think it's a good alt mode for him. I think Michael Bay kinda said it best, it'd be like if Darth Vader turned into his own lightsaber and someone else swung it around. It was always kind of silly that Starscream used to shoot Megatron in handgun mode, like....what's the point? The tank fits his militaristic personality really well, and it allows for him to keep his iconic fusion cannon.

Nope. That’s how it worked back in 1984. Megatron had to be roughly equal to Optimus Prime. Blitzwing would have made more sense in fiction to have been Decepticon leader going by his alternate modes, but prior to the toys were released there was no fiction and the toyline came first and foremost before the cartoon and comic.

I believe Soundwave was considered but they went with the Megatron the gun instead. And since they had access to the Microman toyline, they may as well.

Beside, Megatron’s iconic appearance that is still referenced to this day comes from his 1984 toy even though he is very rarely a gun now. Needless to say, he would have looked completely different had the gun toy not been released in Transformers and they went with another toy instead.

Based on what? As others have said, Devastator is pretty tiny toy wise but massive in the cartoons and comics. You saying "that's how it worked" is not actual proof for why Megatron was chosen to be the toy he was.

I swear there's a quote floating around that explains it, let me look for it.

The gun mode was fine for the fiction. It sucked as a toy interacting with other toys. My Megatron always stayed in robot mode during play. At least Soundwave you could pretend he was a computer or something.

Having grown up with G1, Meg's main alt mode will always be that P-38.
I did always find it humorous that after Megatron transformed into the P-38, he always flung himself into the hands of the Con who wanted to usurp him.
    :lol

On a side note, I do like his G2 tank mode.

As a kid, I liked the Decepticon toys better because they were relatively in scale with real world items. A gun you could hold, a laser gun you could also hold that made a ton of noise, a micro-cassette player, micro-cassettes. I just enjoyed those toys more, and no, I didn’t have the jets.

But, looking back at it, Megatron essentially being Starscream’s target master is lame and a tank just makes more sense. Although I wish they would vary it a bit more. He has been other things in fiction, most interestingly a helicopter in Animated.
