Finally got my Ratchet and Hot Shot sets. Happened to have Hot Shot with me so he tested all the bits I could.

Ratchet's tool set look great, but only the actual guns fit nicely in 5mm ports or the hand replacements. Speaking of I'm still not sure I'm cool with removing the hands. Given their attempt with slide over boxes on Prime didn't pan out either, I might try this once or twice just to see. The rest of the tools all have undersized pegs, enough that they fall out against gravity. Compared to pegs being too large it's an easier problem to fix, but still an annoyance. If I wasn't already used to thickener tricks I would be incredibly sour.

Weak QC is never a good look and brings to question if add-ons are worth the gamble, but the Hot Shot set is every reason why I SHOULD consider them.

The moment I felt the barrels to the shoulder guns click in, I knew this was going to be a good time. Everything pegs in and out solidly. The paints are a joy. The reds are a perfect match to his stock missile-less cannon. The blue is a touch brighter but still in that way paints try to blend with plastics. And of course, the sculpt just makes that toy. Like so many, I had no interest in a blue Hound, but we knew on sight how transformative tricking him out was and I'm delighted it feels like a natural part of toy. This set is worth every penny and I am totally interested to see if their ER Prime set redeems the Siege set's woes.

The white pegs are an eyesore on the combined sword. Wish they could just do the 3d prints in black filament. Then it would be a good buy. You can't just paint them black since the paint will just rub off when placed in a hand port. I know of some more labor intensive ways to replace the pegs altogether but then I'd be concerned about causing cracks in 3d printed plastic.

The CJ kit is interesting but having another rocket launcher is definitely not needed. I like the other two blasters.

 

I think MW products are resin printed, as they don't look like FDM prints to me. But I agree that printing them in black would be much better. A quick Google shows that there certainly are black resins available, so I wonder why they only use white. I don't know enough about resin printing to know what the reasons might be.

 

I can tolerate the bare handles most of the time, but unless they used black for just that spear, it's at risk of turning tragic after some light use.

 

I was thinking about that too. The black paint will get scuffed.

White printing materials are the cheapest.

They are most definitely not resin, otherwise, they would just break instantly. I have tried resin prints before and the fragility is no joke. Resin prints are best used for display only and never for play or even posing. [Resin casts are very different and very stable; there is also "strong" resins for 3d printing but much more expensive.]

Factory 3d printing may use higher resolutions than home machines.

GX Studios has the best 3d printing quality I've seen so far and looks like injection molding when painted over.

 

How about using dyes?

 

Yes, you can dye 3d printed parts. However, probably not a good idea to boil parts that already mostly painted.
