I find it funny how with this one, in his power up mode, the mouthplate opens to show his mouth, which is the complete opposite of what Cybertron Prime does.

 

Huh, this design seems rather similar to combiner wars Optimus.

 

We heard tidbits about this before (I think @Kickback would know best, as he was drinking buddies with Aaron Archer back in the day), but I think we never got this much detail to this very day.

 

Aaron Archer posted on FB that these Optimus designs were concepts for Armada Prime, and that the Super Cross pitch was very short lived - he seemed quite surprised it leaked.
(still, surprising how many echos of it you can see in Energon, Cybertron and Universe 1.0)

 

That is very Exkaiser and I really wish we had gotten this. (Not to discount the larger Energon line for the excellent toys we did get, of course)

I'm sure it's better than what they ultimately came up with, but that whole era is a total write off for me.

Also, I'd like to remind everyone of Aaron Archer's infamous napkin on which he doodled an early concept for the plot of Transformers: Cybertron. Photos of it were first posted by Steve-o Stonebraker following BotCon 2005 (his convention photo page is no longer available on his site but I there's this archived version), and then Monzo posted his own photos back in 2013. Additionally, one side of it was also published in Pablo Hidalgo's book "Transformers Vault".

I'm guessing this is why they leaned so hard on 3H to drop Wreckers and focus on Universe back then? (Which ultimately rebranded the book under Universe for Director's Cut #2 and issue #3) I mean Aaron said it was short lived; but who knows.. I don't expect anyone to remember reasons why for any of this 15+ year old stuff lol. Would have been pretty cool seeing the multiverse thing in cartoon form. Now the Universe line and story doesn't seem so.... disconnected as I once viewed it.

 

The design of that Prime reminds me of the Flame Toys version in a few ways, especially in the windscreen chest.
