Haha, that's exactly what me and the missus were laughing about while watching it - how winded he kept getting and thinking he was about take a knee while holding both his sides. Watching an entire auditorium of old rich white people who could not know LESS about music pretending to know the song but only able to actually sing two words - "one shot" - was hysterical. Damn near got dizzy rolling my eyes that hard.
The only one I was particularly upset about was Editing because Irishman deserved that. But I wasn't mad at Ford v Ferrari getting that one, with the Academy it's not always the "Best" as it is "Most Noticeable". Then you don't know about the history of the Academy. Which has always been distinctly, myopically American compared to other awards bodies. If Parasite, a South Korean film, sweeping isn't a surprise, then I don't know what would have been. Especially considering all of the wins in the last ten years, only four of the best picture winners were even well reviewed, and only one of those (Moonlight) received anything near universal acclaim. The rest were, well, I'll say flat out bland to terrible, so even a particularly good or well liked movie winning best picture is unusual at this point. His earpiece was behind the backup vocals you could see him messing with it after every bar. I was excited just to see Eminem out and about for once even if it wasn't one of his trademark "It sounds just like the record!" performances. They also mixed the crowd WAAAAAAY too low to the point that every pause and breath was comically pronounced. You could see them clapping and dancing and singing along but it was like they went out of their way to isolate his vocals. Also the TV broadcast apparently mistook the word "Rhapsody" for "Rap shit" and then censored the area around where every other curse word would land for the rest of the song apparently thinking he was slipping when he's actually one of the best at self censoring for TV. Anyway, the Standing O was well deserved despite all of that.
On paper and historically, sure, it was a "surprise". What I meant was that for anyone paying even vague attention and/or has seen all 8000 of the awards shows leading up to the Oscars, Parasite winning Best Picture *and* Bong Joon Ho winning Best Director was obvious aka NOT a surprise. At all.
Freedomof speech is great and all..but I think Jurassic Park taught us..just becsuse you can, doesnt mean you should. Theres a time and a place for everything. The Academy Awards are "supposed" to be for celebrating the industry...not political statements. They should be thanking the people involved in achieving whatever award...and then exiting stage left. But...this is what its become. So..if u dont like that kind of thing...do what I do...completely ignore the show. Just check the results afterwards....
My post isn’t about saying things at award shows. It’s about the injustice of removing someone’s rights. but I agree with you on the fact that if you don’t like it don’t watch it.
The Academy is not a body of intelligencia like other award groups though. Everyone from makeup artists to guys who directed two episodes of Friends gets to vote on Best Picture as long as they've been recommended into the Academy. That's how middle of the road middle aged date night garbage like Green Book can win Best Picture against bold, exciting films like Roma or BlacKkKlansman. Something like 1917, Ford V Ferrari or even OUaTIH seemed like a shoo in with that crowd (and I liked almost every nomination, the only wrong answer for me was Jojo Rabbit).
Well, no, that's exactly my point: Parasite was very obviously the shoo in this year. Almost TOO predictably so. Everyone and their dog IN the industry has been on record stating how it was their favorite films for months, and it was only considered a long shot by some because it was foreign. Seems like most members acknowledged the other nominees for what they were this time. And I say that as someone who thought Parasite was pretty damn good, but nowhere close to worth the hype it's gotten. There are others I enjoyed more and thought were just better overall. But I still knew it was going to win, and am happy it did.
Agreed. Everyone's happy for Phoenix, but he went off about artificially inseminating cows! We get it dude, you're vegan. We don't need to constantly hear about it.
