I prefer the beefier aesthetic. Constructor is too lanky to me, and I'm not particularly interested in G1 accuracy compared to wanting a big, beefy pile of construction vehicles. I actually love them so much I ended up with a second set to keep in robot mode around the big guy.

That and all the QC issues on $500-$700+ toys makes me really damn iffy, not going to lie. At least with the OSKO Gravity Builder I'm going into it knowing it's a KO and to expect minor issues, yet aside a bit of paint and a thankfully easily solved problem of a bad bit of plastic causing a joint to fail on the crane arm (the seller replaced the entire crane arm assembly since it comes off entirely) both sets are fine. I just sort of cringe when I peek in here and see people having to take these things apart to fix frozen joints and things like that and how damn consistent it seemed to be that you'd have to fix something, if not somethings.

Is the jinbao much better than the NBK? I had the NBK and sold it the day after completing the set because it was so useless and wobbly in gestalt. I prefer the design of Gravity Builder, but I’ll take a solid figure over a better looking one nearly every time, and from what I can tell in my minimal research, Constructor is far and away the most stable 3P Devastator. And from an angle it still looks pretty strong in pictures, even if it’s a bit comparing a swimmer’s body to a body builder’s.

Jinbao devy has the same exact details and isn’t simplified like the NBK. Its quality has so far been said to be pretty good.

In what way do you mean the NBK was simplified? Sorry, I’m like 5 years behind in my TF toy knowledge.

I read a little about the jinbao’s joints not tolerating the limb weight well, but don’t know if that was a rarer or more common issue. I’ve read some complain of tolerances on Constructor, but it seems that’s the exception and not the rule.

NBK got rid or changed quite a bit of the engineering and sculpt to be more simple and cheaper to make.

Yea for the cell shade constructor I hope mine comes with the open mouth, funny how everyone talking about the "lips" on the head as I thought about that before anyone said anything and thought maybe it was a mistake. regardless I had planned on repainting the face to be more toon/movie accurate colors anyways and Most likely going to be getting rid of his "goatee".

Generation Toy, and no, that's not exactly what I said. It's also not a comparison I can make, because I didn't buy Gravity Builder and eventually only Constructor.

When deciding I want a combiner team I look at three things: the individual robots, the individual altmode and the combined mode. When comparing Gravity Builder and Constructor on those points, I prefer the look (emphasis on look) of the combined mode of Gravity Builder and the look (again, look) of the altmode of Gravity Builder.

Gravity Builders' altmodes aren't accurate to the G1 version (and TW has it's charm with the very G1 toy altmodes), but they're more recognisable to me and through that, more realistic. For the last 25 years I work regurlarly around excavators and never have I worked with one that looked like the G1/TW version. All excavators I've worked with are of the design type used by Gravity Builder. The same goes for shovels and bulldozers (never the G1/TW type, always the GT model). Likewise the cement trucks I see on the streets are never the G1/TW type but always the GT type, and cranes the same. Now I know that the G1 Constructicons were based on specific types of construction vehicles, but those are not a type I'm familiar with and those from Gravity Builder are.

And for the combined mode, GRavity Builder looks far more integrated (the parts becoming a whole), and he looks like a brute. Constructor impressed because of his size, but otherwise he's just a tall robot. Shrink him down and he's no longer impressive. Gravity Builder on the other hand, looks powerfull, massive and a brute that could smash you at any size. (The cabin of the cement truck is even deformed under his weight, that's how massive he looks.) Plus, Constructor is bigger than I like Combiners to be: never cared for the huge size they often were in the cartoon (which means they parts grow when comining) and prefer the sizes they had in the Marvel comics: often, but not always, about twice as big than regular characters and thus not insanely huge.

However, save for Scrapper and Long Haul, I don't like and even dislike the Gravity Builder individual robots and this is where Constructor shines for me. Not just G1 nostalgia, but I just think TW has better looking robotmodes (although the GT scrapper looks far better to me than the TW Scrapper).

And thus, eventually, after years of going back and forth, I went with TW. A bit bigger than I want them to be, a combined mode that to me is not as impressive in look/design as Gravity Builder, altmodes that are not very recognisable (or realistic) to me, but better individual robotmodes. And that's how the set will be displayed 90 percent of the time (with 9,9 percent for the altmodes and perhaps I'll combine them once a year for shit and giggles -- then again, I haven't comined Feral Rex since 2017, since I just don't really care about combiners that much).

I think I'm slowly catching up to speed here - thanks for the write up :)  Is Jinbao a KO of Generation Toy? I just looked and they look extremely similar.

Here you go, sorry not the best photos, cell phone pics. Green looks much better with the color purple on the x version.
Like I said before the silver stripped off very easy.

I really don't understand why they painted the thighs!

That's by far the "perfect edition" version. Thanks for the dilemma you just gave me :lol

Does anyone know if you can fit the original constructor face on the G1 upgrade head? I feel like that would be the best looking combination

Ive been doing some research on this figure and from what I understand the metallic/chrome version of this guy is a QC nightmare, is it just the metallic version that had all these tight joint issues and problems or has it been a problem since the first release?? I hear that people would have to spent ages modding this guy before they could even combine him.

I ask this because I am wondering if anyone can confirm if this newest version (x/perfect) is going to require the same amount of modding and tweaking to prevent damage to the figures? I see a few of you guys have yours already so hope you can give some advice :)  thanks
