Technically... though when they give us a proper triple-changing toy, I'll believe it.

Less significant questions have sparked conversations... though it belongs less in the KO forum of course. But these questions are bread-and-butter for the comic forums. :lol

Yikes... he IS big! That's kind of disappointing. Voyager does feel too big for this design. I would have been thrilled if he were 50% upscaled, but this is a bit much.

It was definitely influenced by the gattai (combination) sequences in giant robot anime shows, especially Takara-sponsored Brave Series stuff like GaoGaiGar.

This 90s series has one of the most influential combo sequences in robot anime. You can often see echoes of it in other shows and media (the combination sequence in Voltron: Legendary Defender, for example). It's a joyful series. :D

It reminds me of the promotional video for "City Commander", back when Fans Project was one of the only players in town, at the beginning of the 3P boom.

It makes sense if you think about it - aside from Prime, who was (most of the time) purpose built to be a leader, the OG autobots included a scientist, medic, defensive strategist (wait is Trailbreaker Bill Belichick?), mechanical engineer, and scout. The actual number of purely-combat guys is lower - Bluestreak, Cliffjumper, Windcharger, and the twins. And most of those are more of "we're just classifying them as 'Warrior' because Bob can't think of a better job title."

There were a few more security types like Prowl / Ironhide / etc., but the Decepticons come across as much more warrior-focused. The Autobots are more like cops who are asked to fight a war, and those are different things. BW and Animated picked up on that general feel with time, where the Autobots weren't wholly prepared for the combat situations they found themselves in.

I think that sequence is directly riffing on the transform sequences from the Cybertron / Galaxy Force cartoon. Though the sequences in that series were themselves an homage to the style of the Takara Brave Series cartoons (including GaogGaiGar). So yeah, it's all connected.

Even Prowl has nothing to do with security, strictly speaking. His role is "Strategist"... he's desk brass, not a cop.

There was also Jazz, who was a spy in the special-agent mold ("saboteur" originally, then changed to "agent"). But even their dedicated spy, Mirage, was basically just a rich civilian who sort of got poured into the spy role (as suggested by his bio).

But yeah... even in the early cartoon, some of the autobots even mentioned that the Decepticons were "made for war" or whatever.

That said, the Decepticon selection in year one was still disappointingly small, with a lot of mold repetition.

So I might have someone interested in purchasing my JB OS KO Devy, but I'm having trouble pulling the trigger. As floppy as he is in combined mode, he still seems great in individual alt and bot modes. I was considering selling him and replacing him with the Daban 1:1 KO since he'd be more stable combined, but I read that JB made some improvements over the original GT (Scrapper's hands or something?) that I wonder if I'll miss? It's weird that I hardly see any reviews of Daban's GB - when I google it, I really just get JB links, haha.

I'm also planning to get that Weijiang OS KO Hulkie/Nuclear Warrior along with some MFT Optimus, Grimlock and Megatron to get my favorite figures in legends scale. I hope this isn't yet another rabbit hole and I can be satisfied with just these 4, cuz MP scale is already a timesink, haha!

Maybe I should just sell the JB and wait for someone else like MMC, DX9, XTB or FT to try their hand at Devy? But it seems like most 3p other than MMC are all about parts-forming now, and I believe MMC is tackling Defensor after Bruticus...

Off topic, but I'm also looking for a replacement for MP10. I had TE01 in hand due to all his praises, but I'm not really taken by his transformation... it's a bit finnicky for my taste. I like MS01's engineering, but really would prefer a Prime that can use MP10's trailer... alt mode without trailer seems almost naked to me. Then today I saw some video reviews of Daban's 9907 Optimus (KO of GT OP-EX)... I know this is IDW style Optimus, but he looks pretty damn cool! Do y'all think he might be a good upgrade over MP10, even though none of my other figures are IDW styled?

That's exactly my dilemma. The Devastator kind of makes me want to sell, but then I start messing around with the separate Constructicons, and they're a lot of fun. It's a tough call. Depends a lot of how much space I have (or if I have something specific I want to use the money for).

The guy who works in the cubicle next to mine actually just got Transform Elements 01, and I have to admit... it's REALLY nice. I don't really go for the ultra-simplified toon-accurate style, but they really nailed it. Both modes feel really good in-hand... but I have heard that the transformation is... okay... not the most fun, not the worst, but...

Which is annoying... but at least the figure is rock-solid in both modes, so the fussy transformation doesn't affect the modes at all.

And it's like 1/3 the price of the new Takara version, so that's also nice.

I think the IDW Prime design looks alright, but he doesn't quite scratch the G1 itch for me. I mean, if you already have MP10 (I don't know what you feel the need to replace it) then having another version of Optimus could be fun. And at least it would feel different, rather than a slight variation on the same thing.

On the other hand, GT Op-EX feels a bit thick to me. He doesn't quite capture the real sleekness of the IDW design. Gcreations does it better, but I've heard their version is not fun to transform and not super durable.
