Hi folks I've started my G1 collection... I always wanted a fort max - and now I have one - almost completed too - just need cog's gun which is being delivered Didn't know how to start deciding on what to go for next... I spotted a ebay auction for Overlord... not 100% complete but I won him tonight.... missing a few parts which I doubt I'll ever manage to get but I'm going to keep my eyes peeled I also bid on a "collection" lot ... and won .. so thats going to keep me busy for a while completing them... Think it was all Warpath Pipes Skalor beachcomber hound wheelie sandstorm catilla silverbolt perceptor ultramagnus sureshot scourge hosehead and a couple I can't really tell what they are by the pics Question is - how do you guys decide what to go for? I am just collecting G1 for now - is what I grew up with and know best ... but where to start... do I go for the rest of the headmasters and complete a collection of them... or do I start at the start of the G1 cartoon and collect by appearance... get bumblebee and wheeljack and so forth ...or go for the 100% completes that come up ... argh! how to decide!! Will get pics up in the collection section once I've got delivery ...
Welcome to the collecting world I would try and pace yourself, starting with the 84-85's, maybe, and then go from there. Do you want a complete G1 collection? Or just 'toon characters, etc.? It took me over 7 years to get my G1 collection completed, and a hell of a lot of cash. My first goal was to get all the Autobots cars, then the combiners, I thought I would stop, but I never did. If you do get into the Headmasters/Targetmasters, etc. It is a BITCH getting them all. Not to mention extremly heavy on the wallet. Some are reasonably common, while others are "Once in a blue moon" on ebay. Good luck, man!
I pretty much just backtracked from the Masterpieces & Alternators when I got back into collecting again a few years ago, and used those lines as my template of sorts. Meaning, I only re-bought G1 figures that also had MP or Alt counterparts to display with. G1 is by far my favorite TF era/aesthetic/etc., but I also personally think most of the original toys are quite horrible, so I put the brakes on when it came to recollecting ALL of them again. The only G1's that I keep out on display that don't have MP/Alt counterparts are Soundwave, Shockwave (well he does also have an Alt but I don't count it), The Dinobots, Jetfire and The Insecticons since their look has held up over time and they don't look overly cartoony like 90% of the other figures do. Where Classics are concerned, I only collected the main Deluxes & Voyagers (plus the BotCon set) and avoided the minicons and Energon repaints (Devastator, BotCon Huffer & Springer) like the plague since they don't fit with the overall aesthetic. I also incorporated Music Label Soundwave and the G1 Titaniums of Rodimus Prime, Ultra Magnus (ditched the Classics version) and Scourge into my Classics display. WW Prime & WW Megatron are displayed with their MP & G1 counterparts. Still trying to find a display home for the other WW figures since the line was unexpectedly cancelled and left it looking very incomplete. Instead of G1 Devastator, I use my 14" Palisades statue for display purposes surrounded by G1 Heroes of Cybertron, and display select WST (Prime, Megatron, Dinobots, etc) next to their G1 versions. Revoltech Prime & Megatron are also displayed with their MP & G1 versions, but could get their own shelf now that more G1 figures (Rodimus & Starscream) are being made. So overall, I keep my collecting reserved to G1 or obviously G1 inspired stuff like Masterpieces, Alternators, War Within, HOC, Revoltech, WST, Robot Heroes, etc. Basically a quality vs. quantity approach. Where the Movie is concerned, I only collected the main Autobot cast in their most appropriate sizes, and kept my Cons reserved to Blackout, Barricade, Brawl and am awaiting the Premium Editions of Starscream & Megatron. If Bonecrusher was a class size or two bigger, I would have gotten him as well, but I'll continue to "forget" about him as long as he remains a tiny deluxe. No desire to have Skorpinok or Frenzy for the same size reasons, or any of the add-on characters or sublines ala Real Gear that never actually appeared in the film.
Yes welcome to the frustrating world of Transformer collecting...there will always be one that you want no matter how many you get. I don't think I really have a method to my collecting. If I get the urge to get a guy I buy him. I don't try to complete anything or feel the need too. In fact, I don't think I have one complete collection of any line. I guess MP counts has complete, but there is so few to the line.
I focus on current stuff, and then have a mental 'want-list' of what to buy next. For a while, I was focused on dragons, but that ended with getting a G1 Deszaras- though I still keep an eye out for accessories. In the meantime, I also got a Brave Max, a re-issue Predaking, and a few other pricier items. Now, I'm looking at G1, starting with Prime and Megs (or any decent re-issue thereof), then combiners, and then...who knows? -Tony!
Im addicted to plastic crack, so Im happy to get anything. Plus I have some completionist in me, it makes me buy stuff I dont really want, but think I need. It's like staying young, and finally able to go wild in a toy store. That $10 a week allowance crap was'nt cutting it
Well spoken, sir! I couldn't have said it better. At least, this form of crack still holds value, well at least that is what I tell myself.
Optimus Scourge put it best; pace yourself or you (and your pockets) might burn out. As for your question, you have to decide first on what you want to accomplish; narrowing down that collecting will help avoid buying those impulse plastic crack buys.
My collection isn't really focused except it's heavily Decepticon oriented with a few springle of 'Bot added in. I want to finish Targetmasters (Triggerhappy, Crosshair), Powermasters (Joyride), misc (Cyclonus, Whirl) for G1 and hopefully get Ramjet and Dirge from Botcon 07 set one day. Aside from those I am just looking forward to Anime TFs and Classics 2.0 and maybe Hasbro SS and MP Skywarp. Come to think of it I am slowly getting all of the Seekers from each line. I'd love to get someone to repaint Tit Starscream into Skywarp for me.
I get what I like, and I really suggest going that route. I mean, if you like G1, that's great, but if you honestly never cared for, say, Tracks, forget him. There are plenty of collector's who have all the entire G1 collection, so unless that's the only thing that will make you happy, don't do it to impress anyone. You may also want to check out some of the newer homages/redesigns of your old favorites, you may end up likeing them a whole lot more, or if you like the toy instead of it actually being vintage, then check out reissues. Oh, and as others have already said, pace yourself.
I just get what I want/what I like at the time if I have the money to spare (rarely will I just go out and spoil myself or anything like that). Only thing G1 I own is Starscream, though there are a few figures I want (aside from the one's everyone wants, like Fort Max, Predaking, etc.), but again..money has to be just right and I have to be able to find them.
I'm collecting all G.1's simply because I like them all with the sole execption of Micromasters and Actionmasters, I dont dig those. Else I collect what I like and stay away from those I absolutely dont
Almost finished collecting all the show characters from BW since that's what I grew up with, missing a few but trying to get deals worked out for them on the boards here but the hardest one for me to get will probably be Ravage lol As for G1, I only have reissue Prime and Silverstreak, the toys are really clunky imo so I stuck with Alternators. I ended up collecting almost all the Autobots, didn't really care for the Decepticons since a lot of them ended up being repaints of the bots. I display them with the Masterpiece figs, only skipped on Greenscream and Magnus for MP. Classics I collected all voyagers and deluxes minus Minicons, Devastator, Prime and Megs two pack. Maybe I'll try for the Botcon set... but its probably WAY too expensive =(
I sort of jump around. Awhile back Classics had me hype so I got all those then went to the con to make damn sure I could have them all if they continued and of course they did. Then I started looking at the collection threads and the Max's were really jumping out at me. I was like damn I got all the G1 cities except for the biggest bot of all. So I went on an ebay mission and ended up w/ a boxed Brave. Lastly I started seeing these KO G1 cars and was like what the hell, an economic way to complete my '84 collection. The next phase is gonna be the new animated line into the classics 2.0. Damn I got it bad but I've had worse more expensive problems so what the hell.
When I started to MIB up I looked for everything but now when i dont miss much I am aiming to get season 1-3 and movie characters MIB done first, only 5 more to go. Then I will do everything that is loose like minibots, omnibots and so on. Then I will head over to Rebirht stuff like headmaster and so on. I will also look at some giftset that I find interesting. and then and only then when that is done and I am satisfied with theG1 Us collection I will hunt for the MAX. and then go to Japanes... and I always look for a few ehobby stuff I miss. GOD it never ends.
Mostly cons with the odd bot if I think it's cool , my wife likes only BW. Some I want but are too costly and others just don't interest me. Only thing I have complete is Decepticon Headmasters.
I try to remain focused on the vintage stuff I look for. There is so much I want to get, but I know the wallet would die if I went for everything at once. I try and set goals for what I am looking for (eg. dinobots, headmasters, wheelie... whatever) and try not to stray too much from that. Right now I am working on combiners, and I still have a little ways to go on that. With the mainline/collector stuff, I buy what I like from the lines. They toy has to have some sort of play value... or at least look really cool for my to drop some coin on it.
i have a list that i go down by priority when it comes to vintage/reissue. but would buy something off list if its a good deal. the current stuff i buy as they come out.
