That is what Johnson requested though.

Ohhhh they absolutely could have. And should have. Assuming the story went in a far better direction of course, we easily could have come into TLJ and found Rey well into training with/under Luke, and it would have taken nothing more than a line over dinner akin to "back when you came to me on those cliffs... blah blah blah" to catch everyone up that, obviously, the introduction went well.

Having TFA end on such an optimistic cliffhanger only for TLJ to pick up a second later with Luke being a saber tossing, alien tit milking/drinking bitter old curmudgeon almost playing for comedy kicks was a massive letdown to say the least. Well, that and the entire everything of TLJ sucking all available ass of course.

Maybe Luke can make up for that in "Rise of... oh wait, no we can't have that either, unless he kicks major butt as a ghost.

Except TFA leaves TLJ in a position where Luke is in hiding. Meaning you definitely have to deal with that cliffhanger. And you have to work through Luke being there and why. The time skip just wouldn’t work.

And we obviously disagree on TLJ. I think of the ST it’s the best one easily. It could have used editing, but unlike TFA (and what I’m reading about TRoS) it didn’t seem like a copy paste of the past or like someone learned exactly the wrong thing from Star Wars.

I’ve heard RJ requested tweaks, but never Luke and Rey meet. Everything I’ve seen seems to indicate that was 100% JJ’s call. Whether it was R2 or BB8, whether Luke was using the force or not, etc, was between RJ and JJ. But I’ve yet to hear an ending tossed around that didn’t involve Luke and Rey. So you have a link to something older that states that? I don’t trust anything JJ is saying in interviews post TLJ.

Well that's what my post was pointing out: yes, a time skip absolutely would have worked IF the story didn't go in the terrible direction it did. If it didn't do that, we definitely could have just caught up to them still on that island.

But as it is, yeah, sure, I guess it had to be done the way it was in order for Johnson to efficiently shit the bed the way he wanted to do. In that awful context of what it was, I agree with you.

    He is.

He is going to show up on First Order ships, and distract the crew so they make a errors on their controls to die hilariously with his sarcasm and stupid questions:
"Why are we going so slow? I thought this ship was fast."
"This vehicle is a piece of junk."
"Your momma smells like a slimey mud hole."
"Your confidence in your shields will be your weakness."

Or he'll tickle a First Order engineer's ear with the Force, causing him/her to push the wrong button that'll start a Star Destroyer's powercore to overload.

Considering the leaks we've seen for this film... this wouldn't exactly be the most outlandish thing to happen here.

Well...JJ could have Force Ghost Leia (with a new hair-do) float in space in front of a Star Destroyer bridge, does a fan dance (like Uhura in Star Trek V), the grey-haired bridge crew would rush to the window to stare intently in awe, then a wounded starfighter crashes through the window taking out the Star Destroyer. While the son of Admiral Ackbar, breathes a sigh of relief while leaning back into his chair.

He'll justify this scene by saying he's giving Star Trek fans a nod, homaging (or mirroring) RotJ but still giving us fans something new, making Leia a powerful character, and righting a wrong that Johnson did to Ackbar in The Last Jedi.

Why didn’t they do that with these movies then if they were going to subvert everything we know and expect from the second act of a story in The Last Jedi?

Rey really should have had her own lightsaber earlier in the story rather than using Anakin’s again. A yellow one even would have made her stand out a little more too.

I’m really disappointed in the Palpatine design too. The one thing the leaks actually said that sounded like it would be cool was Palpatine’s appearance. The leaks kinda made it sound like something out of the movie Virus. Virus kinda sucked, but I loved those creature designs and practical effects, and it would have at least been interesting if they put an 80’s PG horror scene in a modern Disney Star Wars movie.

Yeah, it’s why I’m not trusting a lot of the new quotes. JJ was an executive producer on TLJ and he’s got a really shifty pattern of putting his name on things as producer and disappearing when it gets any criticism.

A lot of this reads as preemptive pointing the finger at TLJ because they know the story of TRoS isn’t that great. And that’s a damn crime given where TFA put things.

RJ was pretty much an open book before and after the TLJ release. If he’d asked for Luke and Rey specifically to meet, I’d bet good money he’d have admitted it. The story about Luke and floating rocks is one that’s been floating around since the end of TLJ. The story of asking for R2 instead of BB8 has been too.

TRoS has enough going against it that it’s no surprise the finger pointing has started. It was supposed to be the Leia movie following the Han movie (TFA), the Luke movie (TLJ) and the Leia movie. Carrie Fisher dying probably put everyone in damage control on the story right off the bat. It took a while for the TFA backlash to start. TLJ was almost immediate. It lost its director fairly quickly. And whoever let RJ course correct with TLJ clearly had a massive change of heart and decided to try to go back to whatever the plan was post TFA.

That all sounds terrible. I can’t believe they’re leading with that.
