Maybe they took the $5 million for the redesign out of the budget for digitally erasing the safety markings from all the guns :p

I really hope the Blu Ray release of this movie includes the option to watch the movie with the original design. I can kind of understand the complaints to some extent. Like the mouth is better in the redesign.

That said... I think the redesign looks too much like a cartoon. Those proportions just don't look good in a live action movie. Nothing has eyes that big outside of cartoon characters. The original design are... well they're also too big but it's not as drastically large as the redesign. It also seems like they toned down the detail on his fur. Like he still has fur but a lot of the time he just looks like he came out of the video game and not in a good way.

This style could maybe work if Sonic is a video game character in the movie's universe who came out into the real world then fine that works. But if this is suppose to be something that's ended to exist in the same world as the human characters... it looks bad.

I feel like the original design worked better as a live action version of Sonic with just enough changes from the video game to make that design recognizable but also believable as something that could theoretically exist in this world. Making him too much like the video game just breaks the suspension of belief for me.

I like that the redesign isn't showing a full mouth of human teeth, and the lighter color in the eyes looks better but other than that I much prefer the more realistic proportions of the original over the gloved exaggerated cartoon character. The redesign would look a lot better to me if the entire movie were all CGI with a Dr. Robotnic who also had those exaggerated proportions from his game design instead of having him play along side real people. Video game Sonic just stands out a lot more in front of the live action as a cartoon character than the original design did. They're both cartoons obviously I'm just saying which one to me is more believable as something that could actually exist.

Well you can, it's called the original trailer because that is all that was made of the orignal design at the time.

No that's just a trailer not the movie. I want to see the movie with the original design. I've already seen both trailers that's why I'm saying I preferred that original design and I want the option to watch the MOVIE with that design.

    Couple things to consider here.

    1. The trailers aren't even edited by the same people who edit the film itself. They will take the scenes they've finished and send that off to another company to edit the trailer while they continue working on the movie. In the time the trailer gets made they could of finished other scenes in the movie that the trailer editors didn't even have access to yet.

    2. The trailer editors rarely use all the scenes that they're given. Just like in the actual movie several scenes could be cut before you even see the trailer. They're not trying to just cram in every scene available at the time into the trailer, they're trying to make something that's going to look good and hopefully sell tickets to people.

That said we won't really know exactly how much they finished with that original design until we have access to those deleted and alternate scenes that are so often included with the Blu Ray release of the film.

Most likely the Blu Ray will only include the scenes from the trailer, maybe a couple extra scenes that were cut from the original trailer, and some unfinished renderings of whatever they were working on before they totally redesigned him. I'm not really expecting much more than that... but considering the release of the movie was pushed back almost a full year for the redesign I would hope they were far enough along with the original design to finish that version of the movie between the theater release and the blu ray release so the blu ray could have the option to watch the full movie with either version of Sonic.

I think you've over estimated their qualifications just a little bit.

They are more qualified to talk about the technical aspects of creating the VFX. These guys actually do VFX work on their YouTube channel so I'm not even going to address that part of the video.

Regarding the specific part where they talk about movie trailers though. As far as I'm aware these guys don't work professionally outside of YouTube so they actually aren't qualified to speak on this subject and are clearly using an over generalization here. Everything I mentioned earlier came straight from the guys who actually professionally edit movie trailers for a living and they literally said that they don't always use all the footage they're given. A lot of it gets cut out and might be used for a different trailer. It all really depends on what they're given to work with.

The trailers have time constraints too by the way. Both of Sonic's trailers are about 3 minutes long. That seems to been all the ad space they bought. So if they give the trailer editors 10 minutes of completed footage there's going to be about 7 minutes of footage that won't make into that trailer.

This is also obviously wrong for the reason that plot spoilers are... if the trailer is any good... kept to be shown for the first time in the actual movie. Trailers will rarely ever contain all the footage there is for that time. And I doubt the release would of been pushed back as much as it was if they only had 3 minutes of footage done. That's not even a full three minutes of CGI. Most of the shots shown in that trailer didn't eve have Sonic in it, just human actors. And you know the movie had already completely finished filming before they even start editing the movie so there must logically be more footage than just what was in that trailer.

Maybe they meant that everything in the trailer is what already had completed VFX at the time not that it was literally all that was available. That is obviously true, they're not going to be given a scene for a trailer until it's had any necessary VFX added to it first. That's a very different claim than this entire trailer is all that exists right now. It makes more sense and is most likely what they meant given the context of them being VFX artists but that wasn't very clear the way they said it.

Hope making silly assumptions based on little to nothing (if they are doing this now there were likely problems already so it would happen eventually regardless) is worth it, Paladim.

I don't think this movie is "in the works" anymore.

They still make movies up to the week of the premiere. It happens more than you'd think and less than you'd like.

So it turns out that the reason for this branch of the studio closing is rumoured to be for tax purposes, they wanted to move elsewhere and did it in the scummiest way possible.

Sounds about right screw everyone but the heads of the studio who will get bonuses for saving the company money.

Reminds me of Rhythm & Hues

Seems like this is the 2nd time some of them are going through this

This will keep happening as long as Hollywood keeps treating animators and VFX artist as disposable.
