If backpacks an issue for you, go with DX9. Zero backpack on their MotorMaster.

Thanks for the responses people :)

Is the issue with Dragstrips shoulders just the clearance/tolerance for transforming the wheels?

I've seen pictures and videos of Dragstrip and Breakdown both having extra/ alternate faces for their own characters, not just the extra Skids face. But I've also seen reviews that don't mention them. Should each figure come with alternate faces?

Are there pictures of these shells for Menasor on this thread? I'm slowly working my way through but this is a big thread lol.

Fair enough, couldn't tell from pictures, at least it's not bare plastic. I wonder why it's not painted whereas the other 3 cars look fully painted though?

Backpacks aren't really a problem for me. I'm one of the seemingly few people that looks at MP44 and MP45 and doesn't have a problem with the backs. I was just curious what the consensus was given the negative opinions on other figures backpacks.

I've ordered Breakdown for now and considering a splurge to get the other 3 as a Christmas present to myself

Dragstrip (toon version) has got cracks in the shoulders. Even replament parts have cracks. They are very small, and the arms don't actually break (they stay were they are and work fine) but you can't avoid the cracks. They can crack even in the box, with time.

On one hand, it doesn't affect the toy. But on the other hand... you know that they are cracked and it will probably bother you anyway :D

But Acid House started in the 80's :p

I prefer the 80's for metal... thrash, speed, power, black, avant-garde, progressive... great times

Loving all this chatting about the 90s! It takes me back!

Remember though, that the 90s saw many different ‘mini-eras’ of short-lived tastes and styles. The fluoro/neon phase didn’t cover the whole of the 90s, I’d say more 87-92. I’m thinking shellsuits, Timmy Mallett, Arsenal’s ‘bruised banana’ kit and the cover art of ‘Screamadelica’. Even then, G2 was still a little behind the times - while I appreciate the lurid colour schemes now, back in the day I can remember seeing the figures on the shelves and thinking that the colours were a little ‘naff’ (a slang word that’s also very much a part of that same era).

Other than possibly acid house, though, I wouldn’t associate any of those genres with the specific G2 era or style. I’m thinking more of the Madchester scene, plus electro-pop (The Pet Shop Boys and Erasure especially) and super-cringey rap music (Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Partners in Kryme, Do the Bartman etc). Oh, plus the bright (and hot) young pop stars like NKOTB, Sonia, Paula Abdul, Betty Boo and Debbie Gibson. Word Up! Birdhouse in Your Soul! Shiny Happy People! Now that’s the music of the neon era!

Yeah, I lived in the US in between 1985 and 1989, and at first it was like a pastel version of the 70s ;)  The neon elements were not as present then as they are in the various nostalgia trips we have now. I mean, its G2 that was fluorescent, not G1 :)  In terms of fashion it was much more Family Ties (a tv series for the young whippersnappers who do not know ;)  ) than Jubilee (the X-Men Character). Still, I have to say that although its becoming a bit boring (saw the Wonder Woman trailer yesterday), I'm still getting a lot of enjoyment out of it.
And speaking of music... My Xmas present to myself was a new turntable. And some Soft Cell records!

Now to be a bit on topic...

I'm trying so hard to ignore Gravestone, as I already have a robot mode Motormaster and I'm using DX9 for combined mode.

XTB is really making it hard on me, I'll give 'em that ;)

I have the same issue, but I'm trying to avoid DX9 while sticking with XTB and FT. I only need soo many MotorMasters

I am having the exact same problem, very close to pulling the trigger on DX9, I am already deep in XTB with toon, toy and G2 also with FT. DX9 is very tempting since you can have a functional but unfinished combined mode to play with already. I just want to see how the arm bots look like.

Well for me backpacks are often the price we pay for clever transformations. In those cases I can tolerate them. ie: FansToys has a large backpack because it contains the entire trailer And it pegs together pretty well. MP-45 seems to be a bit of a loose panelly mess but it results in a mostly great bot mode and well executed alt mode so it’s acceptable to me. Where backpacks (and other kibble) get annoying is when the reason for it seems less important. MP-45‘s feet are a mess because of a stupid door opening gimmick. MP-44 has a stupidly huge backpack to incorporate a voice gimmick that will rarely be used by anyone. MP Ironhide and Ratchet hip kibble sucks because we know it’s lazy - a 3P fix was available mere weeks after release showing it could have been done better.
We don’t know yet how bad Gravestone is in hand or just how necessary the backpack is. I’ll probably tolerate the backpack as it doesn’t look as bad or messy as MP-44 or XTB Cliffjumper or some other boys.
But, I think the thought that some have is that FT’s backpack is an entire trailer and DX9 doesn’t even have a backpack... so why does XTB have one? Could XTB have done a better transformation and cleaned it up more? Maybe. DX9 managed to. One of the arguments for doing a truck only figure without incorporating the trailer is to minimise kibble. XTB doesn’t include the trailer but still has the kibble.
Obviously none of us have it in hand so it’s all speculation and we’re all nothing better than armchair designers so our criticism and “it could have been done better“ talk is pretty much us talking out our a$$. But that’s what forums are for !!

unlikely as XTB announced it will be shipped out to retailers on xmas day. So we will have him in the new year. April is when the trailer will be released, and hopefully this isn't an April fools joke
