Any controller goes, wether first party or third party. I'm personally fond of the Xbox 360, NES, SNES, Genesis, and GameCube controllers. Oh, and the NES Zapper. What about y'all?
With caveats, the Gamecube controller. The asymmetric stick position is my preferred of the options for dual analog layouts. The face button layout is something I love about it as well. Keep your finger on the A button and you can just roll it onto any of the surrounding ones (B, X, and Y) without actually having to leave the "main" one. Of course, I wish there was a viable update of the controller, with a second Z button, somewhat larger C stick, "select" button, motion controls for gyro aiming, and maybe slightly reduce the size of the A button. That would be just about the perfect "traditional" controller for me. Give it a way to split like the Wiimote/Nunchuk or Joycons (so I can rest my hands wherever I want rather than right next to each other) and I'd just about be in heaven.
All of the Playstation controllers. Only Sony first party ones as I don't deal with third party controllers as they have always broken on me within a year.
Sega Saturn. Both of them... the first north american version and the japanese one. They are perfect for games such as the capcom fighters, and guardian heroes.
The GameCube controller, PS1, 2, 3, 4 controller and N64 controller. All are comfortable in my big hands. The N64 controller was perfect for fighting games like Mortal Kombat 4, MK Trilogy and Killer Instinct Gold. SSB is great but besides that and the other 3 games I mentioned, all the other fighting games are so-so.
I love the Gamecube controller due to how it looks and feels. It may not hold up today due to standard designs most controllers are going for nowadays. Xbox 360, DS Lite, OG Xbox Duke. I don't really like playstation controllers as I grew up with Microsoft and Nintendo all my life, and it doesn't translate well to me, but I see the appeal,
The SNES controller, the one which comes included in the SNES, hands down, if you're a Streetfighter fan. And I'm a huge Streetfighter fan. I don't know why for the love that simple but brilliant D-pad can't be replicated, I just can't understand!
I know exactly what you mean. Yesterday, me and a friend were playing Super Mario World on his Switch with the wireless controllers (Pro?). I was used to the SNES D-pad, so it was an interesting experience.
Super NES. Just the right number of buttons which are all the right size and easy to find, durable, fits comfortably in the hand.
For me, it's easily the N64 Controller. I was all about fighting games and that controller was perfect for them.
Tell be about it? I simply don't understand why it can't and/or hasn't been replicated, the D-pad on it, it is simply the greatest D-pad I've ever used for fighting games. But in saying that my ultimate fighting game controller would be the the PS 1 pad with the SNES D-pad and the analogue sticks at the bottom which come in very handy. I'm currently playing SC6 and I main Ivy so the come in very handy when pulling of Calamity Symphony, which is 2 360's from 3 and finish off at 9 on the D-pad!
My fav was the 64 controller. It was like an arcade controller. Zelda played perfectly, as did mario. Would love a classics version.
