Zelda: Skyward Sword and Final Fantasy XIII and for similar reasons. For Skyward Sword I felt there was way too much hand holding early on. It's a Zelda game; let me go exploring. As for FF13, I think I've said it here in another topic, but ten hours into your game is too late to add more game mechanics. The game just go too clunky which is saying a lot for a series that introduced the Junction System.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: I liked some things about it. Then I remember it existed.... Seriously, game has bad design to put ninja gaiden 3 to shame.

Pillars of Eternity. After all that hype, I realized this type of RPG was just not for me.

The OG Mk games are hard. For example I was trying to be Shao Kahn on UMK3, it took awhile to do. I tried every character and exploit. I ended up beating Kahn and getting an achievement for a game my Dad bought 10 or 12 years ago.

I beat him with Styker due to his smaller crouch hitbox.

The game has alot of problems that show theirselves midway through the game. Such as the game's difficulty spikes (Which forces you to be less experimental, and causes you to use less characters.), getting overwhelmed by enemies, performance issues, too much shit going on, and balancing issues overall.
I think Ultimate Alliance 3 is the best game in the series, but also the worst. I reccomend anyone who plans on buying the game to play on the easiest difficulty, as you'll need it.

Also avoid Dr. Strange, Scarlet Witch and Rocket & Groot as their the worst characters in the game.

My main giving-up story has a happy ending.

I bought Fallout 3 based on the good reviews, but despite restarting it a few times, I could never get into it. I thought it was horribly boring, and I didn't understand the VATS combat system. I finally gave up and it sat unplayed for 2-3 years.

Literally the night before I was planning to trade it in to Gamestop, I decided to give it one last chance. Finally ventured a little farther away from the Vault...and HOLY S**T I went over a hill and saw the whole Capital Wasteland before me...it was an amazing sight. Then less than 5 minutes later, the VATS system clicked for me and I blew off a mutant's leg. Couldn't put the damn game down after that, and ended up with 100 hours in it.

Also, add me to the list of people who gave up on Twilight Princess. Not because it was hard, it just doesn't hold my interest. I think I fell asleep a couple of times while playing, and I was like "forget it".

Another one: the original Diablo on PC. I played it for a while, but I HATED HATED HATED the mouse controls. I love a good dungeon crawler, though; I played the hell out of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2, but those were on consoles where I had direct control of my PC.

Ugh. Yeah, Fester's Quest is a game that could have been decent if not for a few questionable design choices. Getting sent back to the start after dying is really harsh, but then there's the stupid power-down items, the annoying replicating slimes, the narrow sewer paths that block your shots, NO SAVING...

I got to the spaceship only once in my life, and I figured I'd probably never have the patience to get there again, so I pushed myself to beat it. I don't think I've ever played it since then.

Yup, I gave up on that one too, but just because it became so flippin' BORING. Throwing stormtroopers around with the Force is fun for only so long.

I bought FFTA based on the glowing reviews. I absolutely DESPISE the gameplay. Not sure I even finished one mission.

I assume you were playing the vanilla version?
I found MGS3 almost unplayable because of the stupid camera, but then the Subsistence release solved that problem. It's practically a whole new game, and that one change turned it into one of my favorite games. If you haven't, give MGS3 Subsistence a try, you might like it a lot better.

I don't know if this is documented anywhere, but 25 years ago I discovered an exploit that lets you beat Kintaro with almost any character. Simply stand a couple steps away from him, jump towards him, and kick on the way down. 90% of the time he'll try to uppercut you out of the air, but your kick will hit him first. Occasionally he blocks, in which case you just jump backwards out of his range and try again. It might take a bit to find the right distance to jump from, but once you find it, you can beat him regularly.

I think this trick works with every character except Liu Kang; he has a strange forward angle on his jump kick that results in Kintaro always hitting him first.

I also have a super-cheap exploit against Shao Khan...

Ironically no, never had any issues with any water temples in a LOZ game(except maybe Twilight Princess but that's because everything started looking the same and I ended up with a headache half way through),it was all the stuff involving Ikana Canyon.

    My summer home!

I like that area the best. Yes because of the whole ghosts, undead things and the music.

Zelda:Adventure of Link. Felt too different from a Zelda game to feel worth continuing
DK64: I got sick of trying to control Diddy's Jetpack. Didn't intend to quit, just never got around to finishing it. Shame, I'm so close to the end...

Yu-Gi-Oh! Dungeon Dice Monsters for Gameboy Advance.

When I saw the dungeon Dice game in the anime, I thought it looked fun and it is fun but the difficulty is a b****.
You need points to get stronger monsters but you get very little points after each match and the starting monsters are just not good enough because your opponent is overpowered and the worst thing is you can only save your progress after beating 3 opponents and if you lose fighting the 3rd opponent, you go back to the first. Can be fun after getting stronger monsters but it took me so long and put me to sleep.

Eternal Darkness on GameCube. Got incredibly far only to find out someone I had accidentally killed earlier in the game basically caused the game to be unbeatable. Amazing game but never went back after that.

Here's another one: Mega Man X5.
After MMX4 I was burned out on MMX (which I don't like as much as the classic series anyway). I bought MMX5 mainly because of liking MM in general, but I played it once and never played it again because even just the stage select screen bored the hell out of me. I still have it, and I still have not played it since then. Never bought another MMX after that either.

Yeah, I played way too much MK2. My college dorm had an arcade machine in the lobby, and I played that thing all the time. 25 years later I still remember most of the Fatalities.
PM me if you want to discuss further, I don't want to derail the thread any more than I have :)

That's a shame. Scarlet Witch was a favorite of mine back when "X-Men Legends 2" was new. I wasted a lot of time building up the skill that let her transform random mooks into drop boxes (and enjoying the laugh she did every time she pulled it off).

But on the topic of the characters Venom, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Magneto, Loki, Punisher, Morbius, Star-Lord, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Deadpool and Cyclops are all my favorite characters in the game as they all have a ability that is extremely effective.

You hit the nail on the head of megaman x5. I only played it twice and ONLY to force myself to beat it, after that I’ve never gone back. Just the first stage alone had me wondering what the heck happened to the series. 1-4 are awesome. X5 was the point I realized it was gonna be a bad time for the series going forward. And this is coming from someone who LOVES megaman in general

You only played it twice and beat it? Man, you must have had a couple of long play sessions with it ;)

I've loved Mega Man since MM2, which is why it pains me to say this: I gave up on MM10. That first Dr. Wily level did me in, it was just too damn hard. I do wonder if it's just my gaming skills waning, because I could beat MM2-5 regularly. I really need to try it again.

    Now MM11...
I won't add it to the "gave-up-on" list yet because I haven't had it that long, but I'm finding it PUNISHINGLY difficult. Like, so hard I don't want to play anymore. I've only beaten Block Man and Acid Man, and Acid Man's stage is just diabolically hard (those areas with water currents and spikes are just EVIL). I can't put my finger on it but something just feels off about the controls, and the stages feel waaaaaaaaay too long.

Omg you reminded me of what happened when I opened mm11 and my gf sat to watch me play xD I tried hardest difficulty and told her I’ve had a lot of experience so it shouldn’t t be too bad. That got changed VERY quickly as I discovered I actually am not a good mm player and kept dying over and over. that game is VERY difficult. As for mmx5 yeah I regret spending a Saturday finishing the game xD tried doing a marathon of the mmx games and that day when I beat x5 I then started x6 and just gave up.

    EDIT:

I now realize that I can add x6 to list of games I gave up on.

Shadow of the Colossus. I bought it based off the glowing reviews, but #*()@ that game is INFURIATING. No checkpoints for the loooong bosses, that dumb "stamina" mechanic where you can only hold on for a limited amount of time, so many overly long animations on the Colossi that I have to sit through while my stamina depletes, constantly having to struggle with the camera... I could go on and on and on. The first colossus was the only one I found kinda fun. Quit after trying to beat the third colossus for 90 minutes with no progress (yes I looked online for tips, and it was on Easy), promptly ejected the disc out and snapped the darn thing in half. Only the 2nd time I've done that in my life.

And it takes a LOT to get me to quit a game, I almost always finish a game once I've started it (probably explains why I'm just now finishing up my PS3 games). But man. Shadow of the Colossus I consider to be the most overrated game of all time. OF. ALL. TIME. I'll never understand how that thing got more than 4/10 from anybody.
