Isn't Hasbro coming out with Hoist first for WFC: Earth Rising? Does that mean he's gonna break his retool curse at least for this one time? Or is even that based on a retool from a previous line?

 

Yes, for the first time in 35 years, Hoist will be getting his own unique mold!

Not the same thing, indeed. It was a new mold for Grap, when Takara upgraded him to "Super-Mode," yes...



...but just because Hasbro repackaged it and called it "Hoist" doesn't mean it was intended to be Hoist (or even "Smokescreen," which is what Hasbro had been calling Grap up to that point).  
At best, it's a repurposed toy for a foreign market that inexplicably had its name changed.

Actually this isn’t the first time hoist has had his own mold, he had his first mold in 2012 with rescue bots hoist, which is technically the same continuity, because rescue bots is part of aligned and so is war for Cybertron.

 

Thrust has always been my fave conehead, but dirge's colors tops it.

You, your cartoon series, your toyline... heck, the whole Rescue Bots franchise is a joke to me.  

Really? I've always preferred Thrust's maroon color scheme... which is probably why I've long since played every variation on the character I own.

Actually, that was a mistake, the result of a fundamental misunderstanding it took years to correct. High Moon Studios developed War For Cybertron as a prequel to the original G1 cartoon, and all their character designs and behavior is based on that. That's why Bumblebee and Soundwave have dialogue, for example.

Hasbro later claimed it was all intended to be part of an "aligned continuity," but it wasn't until 2015 that they finally sorted the mess out, and divided them into separate universal streams. WFC/FOC now falls into the Uniend 812.21 Kappa universe, whereas Prime, Robots in Disguise, and Rescue Bots inhabit the Uniend 911.05 Alpha stream.

The current "War For Cybertron Trilogy" is just a toyline. With no associated fiction, there's no continuity to assign it to... yet.

He's still not quite the definitive MP Blurr, but he's probably as close as we're ever gonna get... since TakaraTomy is still making (and remaking) Season 1 'bots.
