Like Barricade, Lugnut was born out of necessity, to fill a hole in the Decepticon ranks that was standing conspicuously empty. But while Barricade was created out of practicality because the 2007 movie needed a mid-tier villain to menace Sam and Bumblebee in the first act, Lugnut's niche was one of character. As the Decepticon roster for the new Animated series began to take shape, it became very clear that there needed to be at least one character who was actually loyal to Megatron. Treacherous lieutenants are easy to come by; in practically every incarnation of Transformers since G1 the baddies were practically lining up to stab their Megatron in the back. There needs to be some sort of counterbalance, and while loyal underlings have always been present in cartoons and comics, Lugnut was pretty much the first one to take loyalty as his primary character trait.

Still, while Lugnut was a new and original character, his lineage can be traced right back to the beginning. In G1 Soundwave and later Cyclonus were seen as fiercely loyal (although you'd be mad to take your eyes off Soundwave), Beast Wars had Scorponok and later Inferno (and literally every other Predacon turned on Megatron at some point or other), the Unicron Trilogy had Demolishor as pretty much the only one to not get caught up in the roulette wheel of betrayal... But yeah, Lugnut took that trait and ran with it, being the one soldier in Animated who would not only tolerate Megatron's manic brutality but cheerfully encourage it. Hell, in the pilot script for the never-made fourth season of the show, Lugnut enthusiastically commits suicide just to provide a few seconds of fuel for Megatron. So yeah, the only Decepticon that remained 100% loyal to his boss.

Thank god Lugnut's transfer to mainstream CHUG was equally glorious. While his future-imperfect purple colour scheme has been mostly ditched for a more sober military green, he retains the Lugnut Look, with the split-open canopy tummy and that huge empurata optic surrounded by a bunch of smaller eyes that wish they could aspire to such greatness. No real weapons to speak of, instead taking his massive thumpy fists as a primary method of attack. There's a token nod to his signature Punch Of Kill Everything (or POKE) in the form of an action gimmick that spring-extends his his arm by almost a whole centimetre... yeah, it's distinctly underwhelming.

Still, it's not necessary to convey the colossal brutal might that Lugnut carries with him. His massive hunched-over hulk of a body makes him look absurdly big and beefy, even though he's actually on the smaller side for a voyager. Not quite to the level that his original Animated toy was, with a pointless staff accessory that took up a massive chunk of the plastic budget, but still not quite as beefy as you'd quite hope.

Lugnut has a slightly awkward transformation that can't really be called difficult, but has a surprisingly large number of steps to do something relatively simple. Still, what other transformer can be said to turn into such a big bastard bomber like this? It's not quite a WW2 design, thanks to the jet turbines in place of regular propellors, but it serves the same purpose, unlike the multi-role fighters of today. You can imagine something like this being developed to drop the earlier types of nuclear bombs in the 1950s before they were strapped onto space rockets in the 1970s. Yeah, Lugnut might look like he's short on firepower in robot mode, but he clearly lives the ideal of 'go big or go home'. And he's got an earth mode, so he's clearly not going home any time soon.

Thankfully there is no actual nuke included, just a spring-loaded missile hidden in the tail behind a sadly unpainted gun turret. There's a couple more turrets around the front underneath the utterly mental shark-tooth design. It's fantastic to have that kind of detail. Lugnut didn't scan the prim and proper bomber planes with the by-the-book nerd crews, no he went for the ones that would insist on strafing Bikini Atoll after dropping the bomb just to make sure. The ones who saw the bombing scene in Dr Strangelove and cheered appreciatively. The ones who loved the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, the twats. Lugnut is in good company.

Yeah, Prowl had some major work done:
New head from a Devastator add-on kit.
New neck section that recesses into the hood.
Shaved inner elbows and shoulders to allow for better posing.
New paint and Reprolabels.

Working out a Chug team right now. IT's a matter of is they can make updated versions of Trailbreaker, Sunstreaker and Bumblebee and if the WFC line will make Brawn, Gears, Huffer and Windcharger.
