Blizzard has made some of the greatest video game universes over the years. Evenly divided between Fantasy and Science Fiction. Warcraft, it’s first. 25 years and still going strong. Diablo, it’s darkest. And around just as long as above. Starcraft, not as extensive but still deep. Overwatch, it’s most recent addition and it’s most lighthearted. Each one of these has sucked numerous fans in with their stories and experiences. Of those here, which one do you enjoy the most or consider the best? PS, this is probably poor timing considering what’s occurred recently. But I can’t help that I’ve gotten entranced in all of these! Just had to ask the question.
As a gaming franchise, I can say without doubt that Diablo has occupied the vast majority of my gaming "career", with Diablo II monopolizing my idle time during my high school years, and hundreds of hours dumped into Diablo III after that released. However, as a fictional universe, nothing else of theirs quite excited my passion as much as Overwatch did. So simple on the surface, but so ripe with potential. So exuberant and full-of-life in a way that excites the imagination. By design, its setting and characters are a playground for self-insertion, and given how enamoured the game's fanbase is with all of that, I say they succeeded.
Starcraft, I just got a computer that could run games and this looked interesting in the store. I spent my summer digging into the instruction book and the history of each race. I dunno about recent games, but I still recall all the times I bought a game from blizzard and had a thick manual that had some technical items and spent the rest of it with all the lore and world building and art included. That is true of all games of blizzard, but the first one and the one I hold most memory of is starcraft. I still need to finish the second trilogy but alas life has not given me a lot of time to do so.
