Yup. Plastic can absorb smells, even hard plastic.

A few years ago I sold a lot of my collection to focus on G1 and it's offshoots. I intended to try and keep one toy per character with what I considered the definitive version of the character.

Not as easy when you try and base your entire collection on the vehicle scale of the G1 Diaclone cars.

For the most part, I've kept to the one toy per character criteria. Titans Return and POTP gave me my ideal toys for a lot of G1 characters. Tailgate, Outback, Seaspray, Chase and Wheelie all replaced their G1 selves.

I never thought I'd get rid of my childhood Quake who I had since I was 11 but his Titans Return toy replaced him as I felt it scaled nicely with my collection and is a good toy in all respects.

That said, sometimes it's hard to choose between old and new toys. I replaced my G1 reissue Optimus cab with the Device Label Optimus Prime because I always hated the original head with the creepy yellow optics. But I did pick up the Siege toy and I really like both of them.

    Replace a character?
*Looks at Titanus Prime, Orion Pax, God Ginrai, Battlecore Prime, Laser Prime, Galaxy Prime, Cyber Convoy, Combine Convoy, and upcoming spots for Star Convoy, Armada Convoy, Thrill Convoy and Optimus Prime*
*Otherwise known as TR OP, TR Orion, Takara God Ginrai, CW White Prime, TR G2 OP, Siege Galaxy Upgrade OP, WfC game OP, CW red OP, Star convoy, Armada Optimus Prime, T30 Orion Pax and Siege cell shaded OP*
    ...I don't know what you're talking about...

Ok, in all seriousness, it really depends on how I like the new mold and uses. For examples...

1.Gimmick-ability: I'm keeping all my Combiner guys that I already got additional versions in Siege for remaining in combined mode. I like combiners so they stay.

    2. Like-ability: I got classics wheeljack, but I'm still not %100 liking it. the new one might replace him because I like the new frame better. Also, less stumpy.

    C. Rename-ability: Just look at the section above about Optimus....Although another one could be Siege UM Becoming Magnus Prime because I have him armored up, barring the chest/head.
    * I occasionally forget the additional names, tho...

    4. Avail-ability: There are occasionally versions of characters that I want, but I refuse to pay ebay prices for, thus I won't get them... *Sad piano plays for TFSS Blue Bluestreak and Toxitron*

Thanks for the reply guys! Since I am a university student, I really need to be careful with my finance. However, with new and better toys (in my opinion :D ) (to me, it's the siege vs ER prime) coming out each year of the same character, I wanted to hear from you guys to see how you would approach the situation. :)

If a figure of the same character feels much cheaper and less substantial in-hand or goes for a stylistic influence I'm not as fond of, I contemplate selling it and replacing it with a newer/better figure. Sometimes newer versions feel worse. For example, I got my Universe/Classics Dinobot after getting the deluxe Beast Wars Dinobot reissue and only want to keep the Beast Wars Dinobot.

For me, I've settled on not replacing my Siege Prime now and will wait until chapter 3 comes. I don't feel like having to replace it after less than a year of having him, although I will admit that the new Prime is better in almost every way for my taste.

There is no "replace" only additional fodder for the hoard. But in all seriousness I really don't have any problems with owning multiples of the same character but I'm pretty sure that I'm due for a purge to trim down the collection soon.

I don't "replace" figures in the sense that I get rid of the previous version; I like to have my "definitive" version of a character, then keep the previous version on a different shelf or in a box for posterity's sake.

For example, my current definitive Starscream is the Siege voyager; previously, the Power of the Primes voyager and Fall of Cybertron deluxe held the title (in reverse order). When his Earthrise toy comes out, the title will likely be passed to him.

Or, consider Megatron. The "definitive" title passed from the T30 deluxe, to the Classics War For Cybertron deluxe (after I bought him at Botcon 2014) to the Siege voyager.

All of them I plan on keeping in some form; for instance the T30 Megatron will likely be boxed and stored away, while the WFC deluxe will probably wind up on his own shelf with the other WFC/FOC Decepticons.

I don't replace, for the most part. I have a primary version of the character and his variations, who get used when they make sense for a display or whatever. And it isn't always the newest version, but the one I find most fun. For instance, my primary G1 Optimus alternated between TRPMOP and CW Prime, even after I got the POTP and Siege versions.

My current primary Optimus is PE Jetpower Revive, while POTP is Orion Pax (who became a separate entity from Optimus after BW Megatron released a virus which caused spark fissioning). Siege Prime never even got a toehold on the role of main Optimus because I find the figure boring.

Refocusing collection, decided I only need one mold for each character and the one closest the the animation model wins out. However this always leads to me selling the prior mold cheap and money lost.

Dumping off a bunch here very soon too, worst part is I keep track of all the spending and what was paid so I know the exact amount lost.

I pretty much only keep the most G1 accurate figures and I get rid of the rest that aren't. That's pretty much it for me. Siege has made me pack up a ton of figures that need to be sold or donated!

I picked up Siege Barricade and, if I can find them, maybe Smokescreenand or Bluestreak . Still haven't decided whether or not to replace Prowl and Bluestreak and/or Smokescreen(hollowness in the back of the legs is still a glaring annoyance to me). I did pick up Optim

    1) If I - or rather you - like the aesthetics better. Yeah, I picked up Siege Prime but haven't been able to fully depose it yet. Siege looks great - as in Optimus from 1985 great. Classics looks more like Optimus good in the late 90's to 2000's. I got Siege Springer because he so G1 anything better would have to MP. I keep T30's as alternate reality where Springer became Prime

    2) If you can afford it

    3) IF it is an improvement over the first (ie,. better paint, articulation exe.)

Basically it is entirely YOUR decision

I'll only replace a figure if the newer version I'm looking at is of equal or greater quality. Scale also factors in, though not often.

For example, I'm going to replace T30 Springer with the Siege version because the latter is still a fairly good figure but also more in scale with the rest of my collection. If a potential WFC Sunstreaker is made that's better than the Universe version, that will also get replaced.

Well of course I can "afford" it. But to what degree are the improvements worth to be afforded?
