    Forget romance even the friendship was one sided. It's meant to be light hearted and funny but put any thought into it and it was more like she didn't care at all about the guys friendship, which was weird. He helped her with the bullies and it seemed she didn't even care about his injuries at the end. He just randomly popped up like she hadn't even looked for him. It was more sad than funny.

    The human character that showed sensitivity about her issues and tried to help, was a joke. Think about that. I don't think he even got to say goodbye to Bee despite helping them, did Bee not care about him too?

    Knocks the movie down a bit in my opinion but yeah good fun if I turn my brain off. Just wish this part of it had more of a heart

    Just a girl not interested in relationships at this moment of her life. Also, she's rather withdrawn and keeps to herself.

    You know, much like in real world, female characters don't exist only as romantic or sexual interests for male characters.

    I think in fiction, if we have romantic subtext between two characters, it's only honest that the work has them get together at some point.

    That was the one gripe I had about the ending; an indication that "yes, they are a couple" would have been nice.

    I always thought it was implied by how Charlie looked at them and the girl was looking to see if Charlie is looking...and the "U wish" on the car you know.It's not a big deal in the movie or whatever but I felt it was kinda there.
    That's how nice people are treated in real life.If you're not a hot shot most people will say "thanks" and move on with or without you like you were a joke while the one that is the most rebelious and disrespectful gets attention.(Speaking from experience)
    Might be true but even if that wouldn't be the case Memo will still be friendzoned because he's a very friendly and sidekick type of character...and that's how it happens in real life sadly.Not saying how someone should or shouldn't feel like about someone else but I feel like 99% of times a Trent gets far more appreciation than a Memo not only in a romantic sense but otherwise also.

    Lol, NOPE.

    Girl has the right of not being interested. It's not "friendzoning" and the world didn't end because Charlie's not a mandatory love interest. Some posts in this topic are just scary...

    She doesn't even know him, yet. At the end she seems more interested in being his friend than in other part of the movie. But, doesn't seem like she cares about boys this point in her life. She's pretty independent.

    I also think it's clear she's afraid to get close to any humans after her father died. Pushing people away keeps her from getting hurt. Very typically tv/movie defense mechanism that's used often.

    The filmmakers did choose to put an entire b plot as a male character chasing after her romantically when it's kinda unnecessary

    It would be totally criticized if the roles reversed and she was hanging on some dude who vaguely ignored her interest the whole movie. Actually that somewhat happens with the popular guy at the beginning and he is portrayed as part of the bully group...

    I agree with this. She ditched him when he was injured and he'd been nothing but kind and patient with her. Poor Memo deserves better.

    Yeah.We never said it was a tragedy it didn't happen but that too...I didn't even mention it yet but it would be seen in a negative light if the roles were reversed.I don't get how this is any more creepy or whatever but maybe that's how people feel no matter what.Frankly I believe there's not enough thought put into these kind of subjects.
    Again like I said most times a jerk like Trent wouldn't be ditched but Memo as the friendly guy is forgotten.

    I don't think any of this was misogynistic.

    Again:
    1)They hadn't known each other that long;
    2)A kiss on the cheek is not romantic subtext, nor was anything else that transpired between Charlie and Memo; you do know that kisses on the check don't arbitrarily mean something romantic, right??? What Charlie and Memo had was platonic in nature;
    3)Did you forget the extreme intensity of what Charlie had just experienced coupled with all the family drama she is still going through???? She may need some serious time to recuperate from it and to process it, even as hinted at the end of the movie. . .And whatever and however much time she needs to do that is : a)OK, and b)up to her;
    4)Neither Charlie (or any girl) is required, nor obligated to get into a romantic relationship with a boy, just because of "romantic subtext" (which, again, it WAS NOT-she even literally says, "We're not there yet")-dictating the opposite of that is misogynistic, and scary, much as Haywired has said. . .Memo and Charlie had only spent close to 2 (if that) days together on their adventure. . .Someone has much to learn. . .

    Why? That's an incredibly black and white view of fiction. Does that apply to other things as well? Nothing can ever remain unresolved or simply suggested?

    If a character has a flash of extreme anger and wants to kill someone in that moment, is it dishonest if they don't end up killing that person?

    Yeah, there have been threads discussing how much more people liked Charlie over past human characters. I didn't, she seemed rude and impatient with Memo and family who were trying to be nice to her.

    Which, TBF, fits the entirely black and white tone of the film. In a movie so simple and endearingly child-like, having such deep, complicated themes and exploration of relationships seems out of place.

    Though personally I don’t think she’s playing hard to get, she’s just, logically, taking it slow. She clearly likes Memo to some extent, and her refusal to hold hands (aside from being a jab at TF1) is clearly more teasing and good-natured in regards to the same over-eagerness he’s displayed all film.

    In any work of fiction, the characters ultimately exist for the audience's gratification; if we want two people to hook up, they bloody well should.

    The characters ultimately exist to illuminate the themes or message the author embedded in the work. I think you're talking more about fan fiction.

    Both these statements are correct, because there is no one singular way to write, or goal in, fiction.

    My earlier statement (that fictional characters only exist to gratify the audience) was, partially, meant as a sarcastic response to those people who thought that Charlie getting together with a male love interest was totally misogynistic and the death of feminism; technically, as fictional characters, Charlie and Memo have no rights whatsoever.

    My actual views on this are that, if we have romantic subtext between two characters (and you can't hide the fact Charlie and Memo do have romantic subtext), it's only honest that the work has them get together or implies that they do at some point. The "we're not there yet" scene was funny, yes, but it felt like trolling the audience; all that buildup gets no payoff. An explicit statement that, yes, they are dating, would have been nice; if we're not going to see these people again, we need to have the lingering questions tied up.
