I’d rather have a GB Classic first too. Especially if it’s in a handheld form factor with a super sexy screen and other hardware quality of life improvements and an HDMI out option. Ugh! I really think Nintendo could make a nice mint with this if they got the details right (which they usually do.)

Btw Castle Crashers is coming to Switch! Yay! I know it’s a super old game but I’ve been craving a brawler type game for a while. Maybe I’ll get the Capcom Arcade bundle to keep me busy while I wait!

You're also much more likely to get a GB classic! Ideally for me it would be a mobile device with an hdmi port for the tv.

    They also bungled it.

They managed to do it in 1996. It just sounds ridiculous that it's written off like the idea that man built the pyramids.

Then again, I wasted two weeks trying, and failing, to get Action Toys to tell me how to exchange American dollars for their floundering Machine Robo toys, so what do I know.

The PlayStation Classic was bungled for largely the same reasons I outlined above, and which I had predicted before it was even confirmed to exist. They really went the extra mile by putting PAL games on an NTSC system though.

It isn't 1996 anymore. Nintendo can't sell as many N64s now as they did back then, which means the cost per chip goes up. It would end up costing more than buying an actual N64--which means even less demand and fewer units sold, which means even higher cost per chip, which means... Basically it's not feasible.

And that's before even taking into account the fact that the chip manufacturer for the N64 doesn't even exist anymore. But I'm pretty sure their patents haven't expired. So they would have to pay even more to either hire another manufacturer to reverse engineer the N64's CPU and make a clone without using the same design, or to license the original design and still pay someone else to manufacture it. Just because something is older technology doesn't mean it's cheaper and easier to make it now. Sometimes it's the opposite, because the resources and demand aren't there. See also: CRTs.

Well there is also the fact that they wouldn't make any money off games being sold as well.

A good point. Nintendo was able to sell the original console at near-cost because they would make a bigger profit on the games later. Without that, they'd have to raise the price of the console. They'd also have to cover the cost of licensing third party games. If you tag these on after the costs of commissioning clones SGI processors, an N64 Classic Edition made without emulation would probably cost significantly more than the original console.

Yep there’s no way the cost structure of these all in one systems can support a custom IC. Custom silicon is hideously expensive.

Basically Nintendo has said that they have no plans for an N64 Classic, though they are aware that there is demand for it.

I highly doubt it. N64 games have proven to be somewhat difficult to emulate, and the NES and SNES Classics were made to help them get through the transition from Wii U to Switch.

The trouble isn't necessarily that it's difficult per se, but that doing it on cheap, low-power hardware requires hacks and tweaks that have to be tailored to each individual game and extensively tested--especially if they don't want it to turn out like Sony's retro console. When some future generation of Raspberry Pi can handle accurate, low-level N64 emulation and Nintendo is facing a lull between consoles, that's when we might see an N64 Classic happen.

Don't get me wrong, I would fanboy like crazy if we ever get an N64 Classic. :lol  It was one of three Nintendo consoles that made up my childhood and teen years; the others being the SNES and Gamecube. Funnily enough, all three of those Nintendo consoles used the same A/V cable plug.

An N64 Classic release is only "mostly" a certainty.

Over an unlimited span of time, I suppose. In the near term, it's the "no" that's mostly a certainty, not the release.

So, I heard there's newer forks from hakchi2, like hakchi2 ce for example. Anyone up to date which version to choose nowadays? I left off a long time ago when I bought the otg adapters but didn't come around to do the usb mod yet.

The last I checked was about 1 year ago. I was able to set one up for my friend. Hakchi2 was no longer fully functional at that time, so I had to use Hakchi2 ce. There were a few changes made in Hakchi2 ce that took me a while to figure out, but for the most part it was all improvements.

I also recall that the latest version of Hakchi2 would not run on Windows 7, but Hakchi2 ce would.
