I have the Rhino set from the early 2000.s I have never played the Shout Factory set. I have heard that Shout has less animation mistakes whereas Rhino has more because they used unfinished master copies of the episodes. On the flipside, some people have alleged that overall Rhino has the better picture quality especially for Season 3/4. So for those who had both, which do you like better?
I have the Rhino set and i have the other big set that is basically an autobot signal on front. It slides open from the. middle out ward.
Shout factory. But I'll never get rid of my Rhino sets because I can see myself briefly a couple times on the Botcon featurette. It's like a time capsule...
Shout!Factory for sure. They used the master tapes for the corrected footage, but they used the same new film transfers as the Rhino versions everywhere else. Also, no obnoxious new sound effects drowning out the dialog!
Definitely Shout Factory for the 1st two Seasons. Both for Season 3 since Rhino had better masters for some episodes and were in a more chronological order. Shout Factory has a different ending for Dark Awakening than Rhino.
Visually, if you disregard the "mistakes" from the Rhino videos, I prefer Rhino as it is more brighter. Shout's have some scenes go dark then bright suddenly. But the Shout version omits quite a number of coloring mistakes from Rhino so Over all Shout wins this. As my Rhino is incomplete with season 2 part 2 and Season 3 part 2, I'd like to know if the Rhino version got the story chronology of that certain "secret" the Quints were desperately trying to hide correct. In the Shout version, the "Broadcast of 2006" appeared last when it should have been first before the Quintesson Journal, or did Sunbow mess up the continuity again? Edit: I own the complete Shout! series of TFG! to the end Victory. I did not get the Shout JP version. My Rhino is incomplete Season #2 part 2 and Season #3 part 2 and Season# 4. Though I own the stand alone "Villains" DVD of the Headmaster "Rebirth"
Its a toss up for me. Shout has the best Season 1 by far with the previously mentioned image and sound quality. I actually prefer Rhino for everything else for the fact that the episode ordering is more accurate in terms of chronilogical storytelling. Both versions have their own unique bonus features. So aside from Rhino's season 1, I think you can't go wrong with either. So I am going to go with a tie.
Shout Factory all the way. When they first came out, the Rhino DVDs really just pissed me off. The first ep I watched was Heavy Metal War, and the extra errors make the ep almost completely unwatchable (wrong backgrounds, missing laser effects, unfinished animation that Rhino had to "fix" to be in sync with the audio). Add in the totally annoying unnecessary extra sound effects, and I just went back to watching my VHS tapes. They touted "original broadcast audio" (no extra effects) as a feature in their later sets, but they screwed up on at least one of them and had the extra effects in both audio settings. Plus, Rhino had the gall to insult the fans' intelligence by claiming the extra sound effects were always there, we just couldn't hear them...they can bite me. Sorry, rant over Thank god for Shout Factory. I can handle occasionally degraded picture quality if it means fewer errors and no stupid annoying extra sound effects.
heh, I can see myself in one of the 2007 movie dvd extras filmed at a BotCon so I know exactly what you're talking about...
Funny thing is, I don't see myself in the Botcon featurette, but you see my cousin from Norway walk right by the camera at one point. He's not really a TF fan, he just tagged along with me
