I have this one. He’s my favorite of that mold as well as the most expensive TF in my collection.

Not at all. The alternative is not making this cheaper. The alternative is it not existing at all. It's an expensive toy because they wanted to make a high end expensive toy and it's on Haslab because it's risky. It's risky because most people would not buy it. They do not want most people to not buy their regular products so they're not going to make all of their regular products like this.

...i think a dark-orange wash may be the key to unlocking his potential, perhaps coupled with luminous-yellow panel-lining strategically-applied to represent an energon surge washing across his body...

This is like when they call an election well before all the votes have been counted. I'm waiting for John Warden's victory speech.

I mean consumers always have a sense of entitlement, no matter the community. Not to re-hash my prior argument in full, but consider video games. They've been $60 for 15 years. And before that they were $50 (N64 carts aside) for about 10 years. By rights, due to increased development costs and inflation, the basic editions of games should cost about $75-$85 now. Heck N64 carts cost $80 in 1996! That's $130 today. It used to cost ~$5 million for a AAA Game. Today, Call of Duty, Halo and other games of that tier costs $200+ million to make. As much as the most expensive movies. Development staffs of a few dozen have been replaced by development teams of of a thousand, with substantial worked outsourced to content farms in China, just like what happened to animation in the 1980s. Developers have gotten around it through DLC, $100 Deluxe edition and season passes. That brings it up just enough. But the price increase is coming. The $80 base version is coming. And those $299 console launches? Microsoft and Sony were right when they launched at $399 and $499. That's the "fair" price. Get ready for PS5's $600 asking price.

Let's look at other toys. You see those upcoming $25 Star Wars figures that are the same as the baseline 6 inch black series at $20, just with a metallic paint job? That's a test drive. $25 Marvel Legends and so forth is coming in the next few years. As is Transformers Generations Deluxes (probably post-WFC). In fact Hasbro has an entire $20 "Deluxe" price point across all their major lines - Star Wars, Transformers, Power Rangers Lightning Collection, Marvel Legends - that will all probably boost up to $25 soon. If you look at BBTS and see those $45 and $55 Super8 "premium deluxes", let's call them... that's probably in fact what Hasbro should be charging for super-premium figures in these major lines. They're not doing it yet because Walmart and Target still exist.

And Titan class. We've gone from a nothing part of the main line above $80, to $120 for Metroplex in 2013, to $160 for Omega Supreme in 2019. And now with the death of TRU, and Walmart and Target topping at at carrying the $80, Commander-class, get ready for online only (in the US) $200 Titans... a bit more lavish than Omega but still pricer than today.

Unicron pressages nothing. It's a one off. It's a made to order figure meant to pair with WFC Part 3 (which will be the line at retail when Unicron is shipped), which will presumably be Season 3/4 based, hidden in a crowdfunded campaign, because it's a figure that thematically goes with part 3 of line that they didn't feel they could do justice at Titan-class.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are no Titan classes after Scorponok and Hasbro retreats to having Commander-class be the most expensive retail product. But I bet that he costs $200 and if there are more, I bet they go there too. After all, has Star Wars not had $200 vehicles for years now? Let's not forget the $250 super duper Millennium Falcon, back in 2013.

This is an expensive hobby and Unicron is not meant for everybody. What is meant for everybody is the stuff you buy at retail. Unicron is not that. It's a specialty, premium item. And Titan class will probably be joining it. And that's a good thing.

I really regret not picking him up. I have the original Armada mold and the 25th anniversary re-lease. That coloration was the best use of the mold though IMO, even though it isn't "G1" at all.

When I get Haslab Unicron, I'll be putting my 25th Anniversary Unicron away... maybe try and sell him. But if I had Energon Unicron, I'd keep him on display because he's just completely different to not be in competition.

And part of me wonders if some enterprising customizer is going to buy another Haslab Unicron just to mod him into this.

Except that Haslab projects are completely separate from the main lines. Siege sold so well it was expanded/stuff pulled in. Earthrise appears to be a full line. This is for projects that do not work at retail. The Star Wars lines appear to be going forward without issue despite Jabba's Sail Barge being made. I doubt we'll see another Transformers Haslab project for a long time. My guess for the next figure is a massive Galactus figure for Marvel Legends. They appear to be the next line to make sense.

Well put, and I do hope that Galactus figure is next. I can safely ignore that, lol. Was sorely tempted by the barge, Unicron, pffff no question, bought. But I don't really collect Marvel legends (by which I mean I have fewer than 20!!) So no temptation there!

I didn't know that figure had become expensive. Is it just ebay scalpers taking advantage of the crowd funding hype, or has it been going up for awhile?
If you don't mind me asking how much was it?

I would love to see a 40 inch tall Galactus, with Uatu (the Watcher), and Jacky Kirby-stile Planet eating machinery for $400.

Heck the absolutely perfect Marvel Selects Uatu from some years ago goes for $200 on the aftermarket. So just getting that would be amazing.

Hasbro announced the "Modern costume" Fantastic Four at NYCC yesterday, to pair with Dr. Doom. All for Spring 2020 release. So maybe lining it up for the next campaign to have some kind of synergy?

Some Hasbro toy developer also said a few weeks back they'd love to take another stab at a Sentinel. They re-released the 3.5 inch-scaled Sentinel last Christmas with Days of Future's Past Wolverine as a Amazon exclusive with a new paint job. And it kind of works because Sentinels have been drawn at different scales. But one scaled with 6 inch would be about 35 inches tall.

I agree with the sentiment and nothing you said is wrong, but with it being called "Transformers: War for Cybertron Unicron", it sounds like in some way, it is part of the mainline. Though I could see the argument the other way too.
