I just got Ultra Magnus today. It's actually quite amusing to me that he's similar in size to the PotP Nemesis Prime Leader that I have when both are in alt mode.

Man, he's nice, though. The armor up gimmick is something I've had such an itch for since getting back into collecting and he definitely scratches it. About the only negatives I have is the sculpted slant to his feet being kind of unnecessary with his ankle tilts and, due to my own super robot tastes, I gotta say I can never dig that he goes from a faceplated head to a one without. But hey, that's the character design, my tastes can't influence that, haha. (And it doesn't bug me enough to go buy Galaxy Upgrade Prime to try a head swap, though the thought has been there...)

 

Ok, Now you're just taking the piss Hasbro. I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm enjoying it, but seriously? Brunt?

So, Brunt. Brunt was a little tank that turned into towers and shit for Trypticon. Any questions? No, he didn't have a character. Well, I wouldn't call it a transformation. He just kind of disassembled and plugged into stuff. No, shut up. that's nothing like Omega Supreme. #NOTALLPARTSFORMERS.

Now, I like G1 Brunt. I probably like it more than Sixgun or Cog. It's not even making the pretence to be much more than some bits, and it's a step up from Slammer (who's a much closer analogue to the original Brunt than either of the other weaponisiers). It's just a way to maximise some of the kibble that comes with Trypticon and it totally works. It's a little purple drone with a nice bit of orange see through plastic at the end of the it's cannon. Fantastic!

But an unlikely candidate for an update.

However, yer WfC Brunt may well be my favourite of the weaponisers. He's just...well, more fun than the others. There's something kind of unhinged about him. He almost feels like something the 'Cons would keep in a cage to unleash onto the battle field like a rabid dog. That bulky, top heavy physique and the big Hulk hands make him seem a bit further down the evolutionary chain than the rest of the Siege 'cons. But beautiful with it. This is a superbly detailed and deco'd figure. And of course they were going to, but I love how nicely the've colour matched him with Trypticon and Fulltilt. It's a cosey little family vibe!

And, with that gun on his back, his stout physique, cyclopean eye and big ol' claw hands, I get a serious Beast Machines Tankor vibe from him. I do find myself wondering how present Tankor was in the minds of the design team when they were doing Brunt. Maybe I'm delusional, but there just seems to be so many commonalities between the two that I can't help but wonder.

I doff my cap to Hasbro for seizing on the drone thing and making the connection to those Centurion droids from the old IDW Stormbringer comics. It's a move that, as any self respecting and appropriately pretentious chef would say, elevates the dish. It also gives us a few more Battlestar Galactica nods. Unless I'm literally the only person that gets a Cylon vibe from that robot mode.

So while the robot mode, somewhat inevitably, draws influence from a few different places, the tank mode is where they really hew closely to the G1 toy. I mean, obviously they've jazzed it up by introducing a lot more detail, and even a third colour, but yeah....this is where I start to actually recognise the character.

Which leads me to a peculiar question...is this Brunt? I mean, there's so little actual relationship with the original figure that it almost feels like they took a few disparate design elements, bolted them together into something compelling, and then made sure the alt mode had the same general silhouette as G1 Brunt. It's no bad thing, but it does raise the question about what you can legitimately consider an 'update' and what becomes a new character altogether (answer: Whatever Hasbro want to call an update instead of a new character, but you'll hopefully take my point).

As much as I like Brunt it does feel like barrel scraping. Inspired barrel scraping, but barrel scraping nonetheless. Fast Track would be a much more obvious choice for a weaponiser, and that omission really feels like he's being saved for WfC Chapter 2 to be go alongside the seemingly inevitable Titan class Scorponok. But then where do you go? How many citybot attendants are you left with? Or do we just start picking random characters to be weaponisers? If so, give me Rack'n'Ruin plz.

And then (this is a total tangent) how many more Titans can we get? It really does feel like we're rapidly ticking off all the candidates with name recognition. Between the perpetual discountisation of the Titan class toys and the introduction of the Commander class I can't help but wonder if we're seeing the end of the Titans. And their wee buddies.

Oh well, we had a laugh, right?
