Even to this day, a visual work or art, an amazing soundtrack, and for those who give it a chance a really great story. A truest of science fiction story on film!
I don't think he is. Especially on blu ray the models look amazing. The V'Ger stuff, while I don't think most people would disagree goes on too long but it is beautiful. This is also true, Goldsmith was a genius. I think the story is great, it's the execution that suffers. It is probably the most sci fi story of all the movies
And the only thing wrong with the execution is that it's a 55 minute TV story being told as a 132 minute feature film. So they fill all the extra time with slow-panning footage of those gorgeous model ships
Not exactly my favorite Trek movie, but I definitely have a better time sitting through the Director's Edition than the Theatrical cut. Honestly, I tend to find the movie's behind-the-scenes history rather more interesting than the movie itself.
This was my favorite Trek movie for a long time (don't watch it anymore because "pedo-Decker.") I really enjoyed all of it from beginning to end because: 1. It portrayed the crew in a very real sense. Some remained in Starfleet, while some had moved on with their lives. And Kirk was dealing with a conundrum which many people face - when you spend a large part of your life being active and making a difference, can you really be happy just sitting behind a desk and telling others to do what you want to be doing? 2. It was very much a story about finding meaning in one's life, and searching for it in the universe we live in. The desire for meaning is arguably even greater than the desire for sex because it gets to the very core of who we are as a living thing in this Life. Is this all that I am? Is there nothing more? 3. Combine these two things and you have the one time Star Trek actually did serious, true cerebral-level science fiction. It may be a long and tedious movie with some cheesy elements here and there, but the overall theme is deep and thought provoking. 4. The music is epic. We kind of take it for granted because it became associated with TNG, but it's truly a masterpiece with all of the emotions it provokes. If there is one score which I had to choose as the primary influence of my creative mind and art, it's this. I can't say enough good things about it.
I've never particularly liked it, but i'm not inclined to shit on it either because I've not seen it for about 20 years and I probably should give it a revaluation at some point. Thank gawd it was the Phase 2 pilot that ended up turning into this movie though and not the energy alien pregnancy shit that ended up in TNG.
I keep in mind that those long shots served the fans of the TV show who never thought it was never possible for it to rise from cancellation a decade later with this massive movie (Animated Series aside). It must have been insane for them back then to have the characters and all the main actors back like that. Those 7-9 minutes of Enterprise shots must have felt like a victory lap.
My dad was an OG trekker. He's the one that turned me on to Trek in the first place. I'm sure it was a glorious victory lap for him--the first time. By the time we watched the film together, he too complained about the pacing before we even started. But he also explained to me why the movie was so slow, and that it was still very good--just too slow for him to want to watch it frequently.
Lol I can imagine that happened to most OG Trek fans upon repeated viewings, but that first one must have been special.
TMP was great to see; but I'm not gonna lie: it was boring. I love the remastered version than the theatrical. Same goes for TOS: I like the remastered more.
Not my favorite, but I don't hate it. It is deep, and I never disliked watching it. And to this day, the refit Enterprise remains my all-time favorite starship. It is beyond gorgeous.
My favorite as well. Actually, most of my favorite Trek ships come from the TOS Movie era (Reliant, Excelsior/1701-B, Grissom, the Klingon BOP), but the 1701 Refit is still at the top. Even knowing she'd be rebuilt, it's still hard for me not to feel something when she literally goes down in flames in STIII.
I still think Wrath of Khan is the best Star Trek movie, but TMP is definitely the most Epic and most in line with Gene's vision. And I still get chills from the music, especially during the tour of the Enterprise scenes
That model should have gone to a fine art museum immediately after the shots were finished. They could have just built another one for the other movies.
