Amazon.jp - a cautionary tale! Any ideas on how to fix this?

I was perusing some of the currently available MPs on Amazon.jp...and I seem to have accidentally lit a fist full of money on fire.

Just out of curiosity, I wanted to see what the MP Lio Convoy came to in American money and if it was eligible to be shipped to the US of A. Instead of adding the preorder to my cart, I believe that I accidentally clicked “pre-order now”...which is evidently amounts to a signature on a binding contract to purchase this thing when it ships 5 months from now!?

Immediately, I tried to cancel the order...but there’s no option to do so. I contacted customer support who replied within a day but just said that the preorder can’t be cancelled once it’s placed and that I would have to go through the return process after I receive the item...and that it would likely take a while before I received a refund. WTF?

I wrote to customer service again and said that there has to be another way (it’s their own f’n system, no?), otherwise I would refute the credit card charges. They replied again and said “sorry but no.”

They’re just messing with me, right?
Has anyone else gotten snagged by this? What happened? I can always remove my credit card info, I suppose...just not sure what that will do to my standing with an otherwise irreplaceable resource for our hobby.

    Any advice is welcome.

Yeah, I believe it's been changed.
You used to have a window that allowed for cancellations, but now it seems that once you order you can't back out.
I wonder if that's just with international orders or all orders from them?

Their new system is why I don't pre-order through there anymore.

    Damn shame too, ah well.

Just be certain you want to pre-order something. The cost savings is worth it.

So pre-orders don't get charged until the item ships right?

How much of a pain will it be to cancel your card?

The preorder cancellation window has become much shorter recently. It used to be up until like a month before releases. Now it's more like 6 months or so.

In your case, one thing you could do is change the payment option to a debit card that doesn't have any money on it. Once the payment bounces, the system will automatically cancel the order.

Buddy of mine does this quite often to escape unwanted preorders.

Why bother preordering at all if he's just going to cancel anyways? I can see shit happens occasionally and you have to cancel but doing it repeatedly like that causes these merchants to remove the cancel option to begin with. Now if people start playing the "change the cc" number game next the merchants will just charge the credit card immediately.

Hoepfully you can work out something but if not and you end up with it, you can always try to sell it for what it cost you and try to recoup most if not all you paid for it.

    Their whole system is fucked.

Won’t let you change your address or anything. It’s goddamned useless.

That's balderdash, that's why we still have pay on COD and pump before you pay gas.

Go with what @lord ginrai suggests and change your payment method. AJ will cancel your order if they’re not able to charge you.

In the future, just use a currency converter like xe.com to estimate cost in USD.

Oh I agree. I don't condone the practice either. But in the OP's situation, it's a good solution.

They did the same thing with MP Hound. I ordered him in early June and it said I only had until the 21st to cancel it. Even though he's not launching until the end of December... You have to be super careful when you pre-order with them.

Thanks, guys...I hate having to trick the system but this preorder was sincerely placed thanks to my giant, clumsy thumbs only. I guess that’s what I’ll have to do.

Caution: you may have to read the thread before you post. Lol...maybe not. The short version: the preorder was placed through a “one-click order accident” before I ever noticed the “no cancellation” line.

You’ll have to cancel your card. Just call your bank to send you a new card. Once amazon japan tries to charge the old card, it won’t go through. Pretty shitty but their fault for not having a cancel option.

So for those of you who have done this, what happens next? Do they just drop the order? What happens when I file a new card?

Yeah, I never use the one-click order button. NEVER. I always want to be sure everything is good to go before I complete the order regarding shipping and payment. In many ways, I wish they'd just get rid of it - or make an option where you can't use it.
