Final version is the best one,original could work for a young,rookie Megatron that gained later leadership on battlefield.

 

What's referred to by the OP as the 'original' design is taken from the concept artwork from Megs' origins in Microchange. So in a way it really is the original design!

 

Right. The history of his design is one of the wildest. Apparently, that right there is why Megatron has his Gun barrel on his back on the right side. Because of that pic, because it does not exist on the G1 toy.

They are both equally valid to me. But if we are going to go with the later cartoon design, I just want the one they did later on in later episodes. All those first few episodes soft rounded designs (left) are way inferior to the later, hard, angular designs (right) to me.

 

I've got problem with the final design, but I do prefer the original black helmet and yellow eyes. Its probably just nostalgia as my introduction to Megatron was the 4 issue Marvel comic run.

Final design. Its more detailed, more expressive and crueler.

 

The final design is too iconic not to win. The original head...I don't know, it looks like if Megatron had his own past life as his equivalent of Orion Pax.

 

I'll always have a soft spot for the Black Helmet design (in the Marvel comics, not this version of the head used in the commercials) but my default image of Megatron I envision is with the final design.

 

Threads like this always reinvigorate my fascination with the visual evolution and relation between toy and cartoon character designs, such as cartoon models drawing heavily from concept images or package artwork, for example.

Makes me wonder when/if another episode of Chris McFeely's "The Art of Transformers" is coming  

 

I think the original head fits Shattered Glass Megatron better

 

I like them both. I'm just curious why Takara did not make the MP+ toy with the original head.

 

The black one seems similar to Darth Vader's helmet to me. It's hard to objectively say which one is better since I have 30 years of loving the white helmet. I'm sure I'd love the black helmet more if they had stuck with that.

I like the original ones, but i never seen a Megatron custom with original design like figured in this catalogue. Maebe someone and one day...

 

Personally I think the original helmet design looks better. I think the only reason it might look odd because we're more use to the other design. But removing the nostalgia googles can you honestly say a bucket is a better helmet? The original design I can't really call it anything other than a helmet unlike the final version that makes me think he has a bucket on his head. I'd rather have the helmet that actually looks like a helmet than the helmet that looks like a bucket.

The face however looks better on the final version. Oddly the faces kinda remind me of Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime in that the original face looks like a younger character than the final face we ended up with. Also he looks a lot more evil with those red eyes than... whatever color the original version's eyes are.

Makes it kinda hard to vote which one I like better when there isn't one I like more than the other. The original I think has the better helmet. It's darker, has a more interesting shape, and looks more evil than a white bucket. The bucket just makes him look kinda silly. But the final version has a far better face. The color and shape of the eyes makes him look more evil. The lines on his face make him look older like a guy who's been leading an army for thousands of years should be. The original face doesn't look like a villain or a leader. He looks like a young inexperienced character like Bumblebee, Hot Rod, Cheetor, Side Burn, Hot Shot ect. Those are the kinds of characters that younger looking face reminds me of. I picture him more following orders not giving them.

Really my ideal Megatron head would be the original helmet with the final version's face.

The final one looks best to me. It's just not Megatron to me if he has yellow eyes and the original head sculpt is not so iconic to me.

 

If there's one character who needed a different colored head, it's Tracks.

 

I kinda like the black helmet version. I love seeing alternate versions or prototypes of toys and cartoon characterss. It's almost like your looking at totally new character that never quite got to see the light of day

Now I think about it I'm a little surprised hasbro never released a black helmet Megatron titan master with the vehicle becoming his fusion cannon. People would gone nuts for that.
