I know there’s shops where you can open non perishable merch in the presence of the employee, especially to see if everything is inside. Can this maybe be a thing for windowless toys?

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind the cardboard packaging they have now for their exclusives transformers. But I am not the only one who sees the dangers of repack jobs

 

That's my biggest concern as well. I'm all for environmentally friendly options, but toy swappers can easily ruin this for everyone. And yes I know I can order online to avoid this but like @Grimlock_13 said, not everyone has this option.

 

News like this makes me so nervous I could literally vom.
Companies attempting to get PR "brownie points" without thinking through the repercussions really piss me off.
I'm all for sustainability, and yes, this sounds like a great move in theory, but
① If this means moving to blind packages then that's terrible, since Hasbro's QC blows
② If this means moving to open packages then that's HORRIFYING (def don't want "pre-licked" toys or toys w/ snot on them)
③ Hasbro's boxes are already so damn cheap, box collectors have been having a real rough time for years.
I especially feel really bad for SW collectors and Legends collectors who purchase these toys to display in box.

Suppose they use bioplastic, does anyone even know the longevity of bioplastic?? 2 years, 5, 10?
Seems to me like we'll all be f'd with yellowed, half-melted crap in a couple of years.

Also, I feel like moves like this are going to KILL brick and mortar, which is already half dead anyway.
The only reason I buy toys at b&m now anyway is either if they're retailer exclusive or to compare the shitty paint between two figures.
If, presuming this is the writing on the wall to a move to all SIEGE Jetfire-style closed boxes for Transformers at least, there will be almost zero reason to not buy online, retailers would have to go to extreme discounts to get any sales lol.

 

This is a good thing all be it about 25 years too late along with the rest of the world....oh well....

I suppose it's for the best. After a round of unboxing figures, I'm left with flattened cardboard boxes and a crap ton of plastic trays. It's a lot of waste generated just for toys.

In Japan where I currently live, there is mandatory recycling, sure, but the Japanese also burn a helluva lot of their trash simply because there's limited land and no space for large land fills to dump garbage for long.

The fact that countries like China and the Philippines are turning away cargo ships loaded with garbage originating from abroad (to include the U.S. and Japan), especially after decades of serving as the world's trash dumping grounds, certainly doesn't help.

A lot of this garbage is supposedly marked as recyclable when, in fact, it's anything but (sometimes it's intentionally misrepresented by unscrupulous trash exporting companies just looking to score easy profits) so it ends up in land fills and just sits there to the detriment of the local populace.

It's good that Hasbro is trying to do its part. Other companies like Lego have experimented with sustainable plastics like using materials sourced from plants (for use in biodegradable Lego toy tree and plant pieces, suitably enough).

I think this is a good move and a step in the right direction. Bad paint and spotty QC may be annoying to deal with, but with online stores like Amazon, it makes things somewhat easier these days to return defective merchandise for a refund or an exchange for a better product.

 

How do we know they are not going to use the same boxes just without the plastic covering the visual area with cardboard reinforced edges?

 

If they start using BIO plastics on their toys like LEGO I'm out. I will not tolerate that material in my toys.

Don't know if this has been brought up yet, but what if Hasbro introduced packaging similar to the NECA Ultimate line? Those boxes have a window with a flap that folds over the front of the box and has a Velcro type material that seals it closed. You can open the flap to see the figure and accessories contained within the packaging.

Haha! I was being totally lazy and didn't bother reading any posts before commenting. Lesson learned  

 

I hope this also means ditching plastic ties for paper ones.

 

Re. checking paint applications, most of the stuff collectors buy is online anyway, so we get what we get.

But hoping they will go back to alt mode packaging - that really was part of the fun for me - transforming a new toy into the robot. Blister carded robot modes also always looked messy.

 

I'm pretty sure Velcro is made of plastic...

 

Anyway, with no window I hope we get some epic box art!

 

Oh yeah, you're right. Perhaps they can use a tab on the flap that will slot into the other side of the package to keep it all enclosed.
