I'd rather reduce the sizes of the boxes. At least it would make postage cheaper.

Isn't foam just as bad for recycling? And more expensive?

I imagine they'll just go for cardboard trays with stuff tied down.

Except those have, typically, higher unit-to-unit quality control. Mainline retail figures do not.

If we use a studio series box as an example, it has a plastic window on the top and one on the right side and of course, the main window to see the figure itself. However, the top and right window aren't even needed and don't provide any benefits whatsoever. Also, the plastic bands which keep the figure in place were originally cardboard, if anyone remembers, so hasbro have brought that upon themselves. I only think that the window boxes should be kept for the collector lines such as the studio series.

Well, Hasbro has already reduced the plastic in the toys themselves for years....

Honestly I've been buying online more now so this shouldn't affect me much. Couldn't justify all the gas money driving around to come up empty when I can have them shipped straight to my door.

I'm super okay with this. I would much prefer to not have to deal with the frankly depressing amount of plastic that still falls out of my TF boxes every time I open one, and as my current apartment doesn't have an easy plastic recycling option I'd be much happier not having to keep throwing it out with the rest of the trash.

Someone else in this thread hit the nail on the head when they said the packaging may be a little more like Cyberverse for certain size classes, or at least closer to the Jetfire/Alphastrike boxes wherein there's no window or anything. Maybe if they find out a more sustainable way to create a window we'll have something closer to the mostly-cardboard G1 boxes, which I wouldn't mind a bit.

I’m totally on board with this. I personally never really look for paint errors and stuff when I toy hunt and I buy a lot of stuff online anyways so I couldn’t check even if I wanted to. No more of those stupid little ties is great too. Siege has shown us that a windowless box can look pretty awesome too.

I have noticed the Siege figures have less plastic packaging, at least whereas PotP had Deluxes and below in plastic blister packs Siege only has Battlemasters and Micromasters in blister packs with Deluxes and up being mostly cardboard with a plastic window and plastic tray.

I do wonder if Hasbro may look into similar materials as LEGO are starting to implement, using a sugar cane oil derived plastic which is chemically identical to the one they have been using but is sustainable and not using fossil fuels - and it's not the sort which degrades like some plant based plastics which obviously is not something that is desirable for toys/collectibles.

Better for MISB collector's maybe? I wouldn't freak out, if people buy MP from Japan, there is no window. Not just MPs, but a few I think of on my shelf that had no window is Micron Legend and Superlink suff. I'm sure this is more, but that's just from off the top of my head. We can't see the back of the TFs either when in the packaging. So, it's a bit of inconvenience especially for those who do the switch-a-roo. I would just open it in the parking lot after paying and take a quick peek. Where I work, we sell a lot of items in box, people always want to open it 1st. Policy is, buy it, open it right here in front of me, if you want to return it, return it and you don't lose your spot on line. You can probably tell the cashier after you pay for it, you want to take peek and make sure it's not damaged as it's a collectible. I can't imagine them saying no, especially after you paid for it.

The difference between plastic and cardboard is that trees are a renewable resource as long as new ones are planted to replace the ones cut down. It takes time but you end up with a cycle which replaces itself, whereas plastic is still on the whole made from fossil fuels which are finite. Though there are alternative methods of making plastic being developed such as the plant oil plastics I mentioned in my previous post which again by using plants are a renewable resource.

Also with regard to plastic in the toys themselves, the key point here is single use plastics. Things like the packaging for the majority of consumers who are not collectors (myself included) they don't keep the packaging, at least certainly not the plastic trays etc once the figure is out of it. For example just recently I went through my Siege boxes and recycled all the plastic trays as well as most of the cardboard packaging after cutting off the character art - and keeping the box for my Alphastrike squadron intact as it has the biggest version of the Siege series art I own.

Times change... and so must we. As long as they toss out those fucking little plastic ties along with the rest of the plastic, I could care less.

Not just that. But what about those people who swap the figure with one of their old unwanted figures and then someone brings it home finding out it's not the figure advertised on the box.

Or we'll get them locked down, like we hafta do with ice cream, because of that crazy ice cream licker lady.

Why leather? That'll make everything even more expensive.

Are blister packs the trays that hold the larger figures as well? I hate those. Take up so much recycling can space as well.

Hope it's all cardboard. Couldn't care less about the MISB market any longer since I buy 99% online.

Honestly, I'd gladly take a slight inconvenience to collecting in exchange for less garbage cluttering up the earth. This is a welcome change and I'm curious to see how this effects other lines to (The TFTCG and MTG come to mind)

i don't understand how anyone could see this as a bad thing !! a lot of packaging gets thrown out and that includes some collectors we have seen it on these boards when people have made threads asking what you do with the boxes ect , our world is swimming in disposable plastic some of which is from single use plastics from packing and packaging

unless you don't give a shit about the planet i can't see this as anything but a good thing

"edit" btw i recycle everything i can and use biodegradable bags made out of cornstarch for my food waste which degrade over 6 months , i'm a vegetarian which i'm not far from being vegan , so i try to do my bit
