Okay, I just saw something pretty cool on Stumbleupon, and I thought it'd be cool to try this. Essentially, the project was this, if I understood it correctly. One design artist sent out a letter with the instruction to decorate the package and/or letter, then pass it on to another artist somewhere, who would do the same thing, and so on, and so on. I'm not sure the exact specifications because I moved on quickly (as befits the attention-span defying nature of stumbling) but was then struck by what fun this could be. So, here's the idea. I think it'd be REALLY cool to do this ourselves. I'd be willing to start it. Basically, we'd do essentially the same thing, except we'd do some kind of big Transformers jam picture. One guy would draw a character, any generation, any style, whatever, and then mail it to the next guy on the list, who would do the same thing, and so on, and so on, until we get to... uhm.. the end of the list... I dunno, I need some help on the setup here. Does this sound like anything you guys might be interested in getting in on? I thought about making it a digital project of the same style, but I just find drawing on actual paper a little more satisfying, plus I just thought the nature of getting this package in the mail and seeing what the last guy had done would be SO COOL. sounds a bit like a project i wanted to do a long time ago. only without the physical mailing. it was just drawn, scanned, and digitally composited course nothing beats traditional im just kinda meh on it because im always so lazy when it comes to mailing stuff lol definately sounds like an awesome project though. would be cool to have it all done by everybody, bring it to Botcon or somethin.
what happens if it gets lost in the mail, or someone steals it Sounds fun, but maybe a digital version would be safer and more efficient?
Plus, I'd imagine the cost of physical mail would prohibit us non-us residents taking part. But digitally done, yeah, Id be definitely up for it!
This sounds like a *fantastic* idea. But unless it's digital, I'm out I'd really like to contribute too.
Hurm. Well, I suppose we could do it digital... I'm kind of a crappy colorist though. Maybe if someone wanted to color my part...? Tell ya what though, I guess if we did it at a high enough resolution, it'd be cool because then we could all print out a copy for ourselves. Okay, fair enough, let's do it digital. You've convinced me. I'll start it, and then email a copy to the first person who responds to this post. (PM me too so I can get your email address.) 11x14 image sound good for everyone? And LMK what format you'd like it saved in. Unless you don't care. I usually use .TIF because it's lossless and also because I'm too poor to afford Photoshop . You can do it digitally then print it out and paste it into the sketchbook or whatever it is. And the students of Ringling College of Art and Design does that, among other types of people. It's called the traveling sketchbook (you can google it). But yea! That sounds like a cool idea! I'd wanna be a part of that. : ) The only thing i'd worry about tho is that since this is TF related. Some insane geek out there might tear out pages they like and keep it. :O
That's a good idea. I could always do that. I'm up for whatever. Might look kinda cheesy with stuff pasted on there though.
well. my original project was first setting up a background. or some kind of plane/ point of reference for everybody to draw to kinda hard to paste together different drawings and make it look like a cohesive image if all the characters are drawn at various conflicting angles my original plan was to take said drawings, compile them all onto the bkg. and then one [or more. whatever. the pic and be divvied up or whatever. maybe even the individual pics can be divided up among several different colorists keeping in mind one consistant lightsource. i dunno] colorist would go and color the whole pic. this is, in my mind, the perfect definition of a collaboration you can go ahead and sign me up if we're doing this digital. would be awesome to see the end result
this sounds like a lot of fun count me in (even though my character will probably be drawn on paper and scanned in to the comp then added to teh final image and only in black and white) but yea sounds like fun
What about doing ones that are character specific? Say, a whole page of different people's interpretations of Optimus? Or Megatron, or Starscream? --Moony
Aww man. If some was willing to do it oldskool, I'd offer up a snare drum shell and at the end of it, send it back to me and I'd clear coat it and we could do a give away!
I'd agree with this, but maybe suggest that those who can should colour their individual pic in flats only, to save a bit of time & effort for the main colourist(s)? Either way, I'm in. but I would say this; maybe suggest one theme or idea to start with, and a rough idea of the way the pic should look at the end (i.e. Autobots on one side & Cons on the other, or just a massive big mix-up like Dons Litho form a couple of years back). Is that what Josh suggested already? Matt - since this is your idea maybe you should take the lead on that. Good luck!
Okay, let's get this down to brass tacks. The Official Rules. 1. The artist may draw whatever floats his or her boat, so long as it be a Transformers character of some variety. Fancharacters are okay too. 2. Please keep your drawing rated PG. This is just so I don't see anything else, because I would be unable to stop weeping uncontrollably. 3. Do not show your piece, either in-progress or finished, until the entire collaborative effort is complete! This way, each artist on the chain gets to see a little bit of it at a time, until the project is declared finished and the final effort is unveiled to the group at large. It is permissible to announce who you drew, for reasons that will become clear later. 4. When you are done with your part, announce that you are done in this thread and get the file sent to the next artist, who will then announce their receipt of the file (again, in this thread), complete their part, and so on, and so on until the project is completed. That way, we can keep track of who's had it, who's got it and is working on it, and the collage's current status. 5. If you are not the best colorist in the world, and you'd like to have someone else do it for you (like, for example, me,) once you have finished your art and arranged it on the scene, announce that your piece is open for coloring if you so desire by the next available colorist on the chain. 6. Try to make your character fit within the scene as it's laid out with the other characters. If you can make your character appear to be interacting with the others, so much the better. 7. Please don't sign your artwork. At the end of the project, we'll get everyone's signatures arranged onto the piece in some way that looks wicked sweet. 8. DO NOT REARRANGE THE LAYOUT. If someone already has their character in the foreground, for example, don't draw your character so that it would be covering theirs up, or obscuring large portions of the other artwork. That's jerky. Just work within what's available. Since this is a digital file, there's sure to be ways to enlarge the canvas and workable area so that people can be added to the picture. 9. Similarly, DO NOT ALTER SOMEONE ELSE'S ARTWORK. Unless you are the colorist, leave people's art alone! Obviously, this is open to common sense; if you've got a cool pose you want your character in that would interact well with someone else's piece (let's say, Apeface swinging from Trypticon's arms, or something, for example,) try to contact the person who drew that part. You wouldn't want someone changing your art; don't do it to someone else. Okay, that's all I can think of. Anyone got any other suggestions, LMK. Think we could get a mod to sticky this? I dunno. Cool. Good rules too, but might I make one suggestion? (Tell me to sod off if you like). Maybe for this piece we should stick to official characters, with the possiblity of another piece down the line with only fan characters?
