If you were going to BotCon just for the exclusive toys, you weren’t doing BotCon right.

Even took the scumbag VIP passes to secure exclusives for the sake of money for themselves thing too. Which is funny considering how much the people behind TFCon shit talked that move and Botcon. >.>

I prefer the 'selects' method over the 'club' method. With selects the prices are better and you can pick & choose who you want to buy.

I’ll admit, I miss BotCon (I do not miss FunPub, that needs to be clearly stated). It’s hard to explain it in words, but BotCon had an energy to it. It was a Transformers celebration that allowed you to meet friends, purchase toys new and old, and it was officially licensed.

I feel BotCon went beyond the exclusive toys, though that was an element. “Replacing” those exclusives with Selects don’t do it quite as much for me.

Regardless, in the spirit of the thread here, all signs point to BotCon not coming back, nor Hascon for that matter. It seems Hasbro has taken this type of concept in their own hands and in a different direction.

....and Hasbro has been making plenty to choose from. It's a great time to be a fan.

I love selects to be honest, it's been a great line.

I certainly read the initial postponement announcement as a cancellation notice.

I'd like to see Botcon come back with no exclusive toys. They aren't necessary as a draw anymore. Botcon is supposed to be the preeminent Transformers convention where you have a shot at finding any Transformer made over the past 35 years for sale, as well as a destination event to meet voice actors, writers, artists, and talk directly to Hasbro reps face-to-face. It's weird to think, after three years of no official convention but no shortage of exclusive toys offered through other avenues, anyone would say "No Botcon exclusives? Meh, I'll stay home."

To think Hascon would have been the perfect place to reveal WFC part 2.

For emphasis, all this talk about Selects vs. BotCon misses the point I was making completely.

They’re not mutually exclusive, and could potentially co-exist in theory. One need not take anything away from the other,

I’m aware of the captions you’re referencing, but I’m thinking those came after the cancellation of the box sets, which (if true) suggests the origin with those rather than with any club.

I think hasbro split their/our needs in 3:
    - having a convention
    - selling exclusive toys through a convention.
    - having a specific tf convention
For this, select line replaces the Botcon toys

And since last year hasbro has plenty of opportunity worldwide to present new toys, with comic cons and other fan expo.

For our last need of a specific convention about transformers, there are a few more as well with tfcon

Didn’t hasbro has issues needing to relocate headquarters? With this issue they decided to go to more comic cons and I think this strategy works, especialy worldwide

If we ever get Botcon back (and i do want it back)
Hasbro could always do this the way 3H did and only have 2-4 exclusives.
One for pre-reg, one at show, and keep everything else as selects.

I understand what you're saying and maybe having both co-existing could work but I still lean towards the "I think its better just having Hasbro Selects" idea simply because of the cost factor. For example, I would have been super bummed out if Siege Redwing had been a Botcon exclusive because it would have cost at least 2x the price and that would have killed my motivation to get the figure. That means my Siege Seeker collection would have been short one figure from being complete.

I mean, if Botcon continued to make super esoteric and original characters, maybe that could work because they totally wouldn't be something Hasbro would produce themselves. But then, how high would the interest level be in those figures? I don't know. I understand the interest in what Botcon brought to the table when they were around, I just wasn't a fan of the pricing model. (I'm also usually not that super interested in original or esoteric characters.)

I'm also wary of Hasbro flooding the market with too many exclusives/repaints during a given year. I think we've reached saturation point this year. I think it hurts the franchise when you put too much product because inevitably, some of that extra product is just not interesting and it burns out the fans.

Yeah, I know, I know. I'm a curmudgeon and the stuff outside of the exclusive toys and Hasbro product reveals just doesn't interest me as much.

id agree, the sequence of events likely goes boxsets gets cancelled, figures get set up as new fan club figures, fan club doesnt happen so figures become retail exclusives

I regretfully never made it to a BotCon, and I do wish I could have before the end.
I had no intterest in FunPub, but did want to experience the convention just for the energy you mentioned.
I won't go to a TFCon, so if HasCon never happens again, then I'll live and enjoy the Selects line.

Selects doesn't replace Botcon toys though. Selects has slowly become a catch-all for any exclusive figure. And Hasbro, for the most part, seems to be using it to sell the same kinds of repaints we'd have previously expected to see in the retail line. (Think CW and early TR).

    YUP!

greenlight w/dazzlestrike, alpha strike counterforce, phantom strike squadron, rainmakers, micromaster 10 pack, fan vote 3 pack, ratchet, bluestreak, soundblaster, cel shaded optimus, and cel shaded megatron would disagree with you about selects being a catch all for any exclusive figures. thats more non hasbro selects exclusives this year than there are selects figures. generations selects more or less kind of replaces the figure subscription service rather than botcon figures
