Sometimes I wonder why the people just don't five-finger discount the items rather than do this. It's still stealing. Reminds me of that story about the guy returning shitty hard drives in the boxes of brand-new ones. Eventually, he got caught.

They won’t get arrested for this. It’s extremely hard to prove they didn’t buy it like that, so there’s not really any legal danger for the people doing this. The most that will happen is they’ll get “banned” from a store, but those bans are rarely enforced. It sucks but this shit is going to continue, it’s so bad in my area with Marvel Legends I’ve just stopped collecting them.

They sometimes stop accepting returns from certain customers if things like that happen too many times.

That's the worst repack I've ever seen somebody get away with. I can't think of anything else that would top this.

If I saw a G1 Mindwipe on the shelf, I'd buy it with no regrets.

If someone were silly enough to repack a G1 Hound, or any G1 fig for that matter, I'd probably buy it too.

That's not really a repack, it looks like someone just stole the figure and left the box

There is a Walmart in my area I find one each time I go. Reported to the manager in the past, but they don't seem to care.

Tell that to the guy in this article (I posted it a while back in this thread):

He is accused of repacking various things, like burned out lightbulbs, but this is the "best" one:

Police said Lippi also bought a $150 Keurig coffee machine on March 30, returned it and received a full refund a day later. Kmart employees notified the store's loss prevention officer after realizing the coffee machine box instead contained a basketball, according to police.

Man accused of stealing from Kmart days after buying $8 million private island

Well that’s entirely different. He stole a $150 coffee maker and swapped it with a basketball. These people are swapping toys with toys and most retail workers (I say as a retail worker) aren’t going to give a shit what’s in the box and even if they take it off the shelf it’ll just be salvaged and loss prevention won’t be involved.

When TRU had MP Soundwave my store got swindled by a customer who swapped one with the oversized G1 KO and slips of paper with pictures of the cassettes in their spots. Wish I could have got a picture. Could have caught them had I been at the service desk when it was being returned.

I did catch someone doing this when I was a manager at Winner’s years and years ago. I wasn’t too versed in what was what at the time, but there’s a picture on the box and I’m not a total idiot. I’m pretty sure it was a Cybertron figure — was in a box with a window on the front, a blue toy, perhaps deluxe Hot Shot (?)

I did not accept the whatever it was in the package instead. It was obviously the wrong item as it didn’t match the picture, and it didn’t fit the bubble.

But being in customer service you can’t say to a customer that they did this intentionally, or even react with an expression that shows you think they’re doing something underhanded, so it was the old “oh, I think you mistakenly boxed up the wrong toy” kinda thing. I remember the incident because he insisted it was right, got annoyed, and asked for the manager... which was me (there was a store manager, but this was a customer service situation). I apologized and said something along the line of, “this same thing has happened to me as well” ... which it hasn’t, but appease those customers.

When I worked retail I often saw other workers take on the attitude that it’s us against them, like the customer is some kind of enemy you gotta be wary of. But I quickly became manager because I actually liked the people — friendly and understanding even to the thieves (shoplifters too), and was genuine, not fake-friendly. In thieving situations, it’s the best way to not fan the flames into a really big irate kind of situation.

Many people don’t have the mix of assertiveness + calmness to always stick to their guns regarding company policy, and know how to do this without ever becoming emotionally charged up. I say ‘most people’ because I don’t think it’s limited to the return desk. So to avoid the angry confrontation (which they’ve very likely had to go through before, and of course hated it!) they will take the course of least resistance, and just return the item. They’re likely instructed to do so if the customer is getting angry.

Honestly that's not really surprising. It's ~$60 for a "proper" Reflector and so many people feel entitled. They "deserve" deluxe Transformers for $10, they "deserve" three Reflectors, and the don't "deserve" to pay more than they want to. It's not right but it's they way dome people act.

Was a cheap bastard. It was even bought at clearance. You'd think between the cost of the "replacement" figure and 2 trips worth of gas to the store that it would be a wash anyway at that price.
