so where did the 5000 number come from? Do we have anything concrete to base it on or is it just a guess? I'm not trying to be snarky or anything, I genuinely wanna know and this thread is 300 pages.

I doubt anybody would pay that much for the Unicron. When it comes to collecting, Star Wars fans are a special breed. I guess the years of conditioning has affected their brain cells and their ability to be wise about money...LOL

That is the reality and Unicron wont be any different. If/when this gets funded there will be a set number made. The majority of people are getting this for themselves. Those enterprising enough (and can afford it) will make a tidy profit when this is finally released and no longer being produced.

...and TF fans/collectors are just as crazy as SW fans/collectors hehe

Also, there are parts of the world that Star Wars isn't a big deal but Transformers are. So Star Wars is probably overall more popular worldwide and in most areas, but Transformers is a little more consistent. Then again, Unicron isn't as recognizable either.

I'm curious to see how Unicron goes price wise. My speculation is: it will take longer than the barge to sell out at collector shops; secondary market prices will hit double the initial offering in about a year; a huge chunk of the extras will then go on the market and stagnate prices for a little while; that stock will slowly dry up and triple + prices will stabilize from about 2 years and on.

Sorry, recognizable to general audiences. He looms fairly large among Transformers fans. Despite being a fairly major villain and plot point for years, In my opinion the general audience doesn't recognize him still. As silly as it may seem, recognition beyond the die hards does matter.

ETA: Further thoughts in Unicron's favor over the barge. He is a character instead of just a playset. In my experience nonTF fans find him interesting even with zero recognition.

People behind the die hard fans have a say in the finances of some die hard fans. Things like this do matter. I discussed the purchase with my wife for instance. People do buy expensive gifts for others. I have family that would recognize the Sail Barge but not recognize Unicron. I have two very expensive Lego Star Wars as gifts, but outside my wife I don't know anyone who buys me big gifts who would recognize Unicron.

And, as rare as it seems, there are non die hard who buy random expensive collectibles. Recognition helps in getting thisbsort of thing out there to those sorts of people.

Following up on my above posts, I argued that, based on the Barge’s performance, Unicron needed to stay within 9% of the Barge’s performance to get funded, if all other things remain equal. Based on the Barge’s 66 day backer per average, after its first 2000 backers, that would mean Unicron needed to average about 54 backers per day. I argued anything below 50 would be a significant set back.

the 10 days since that post Unicron has captured 370 backers — an average of 37 per day. I think that’s an abject disaster. At that rate, Unicron will need a greater last week increase than the Barge received. It’s hard to argue it should receive it if Unicron hasn’t performed better than the Barge at any point of the campaign.

The only argument that can be made is that Transformers has a greater high end international collector fan base in Asia that will make up the difference from the domestic shortfall from the Barge.

To a poster that will remain unnamed, this is how you use statistics to MAKE and argument. The stats aren’t the argument.

EDIT: that being said, if we believe there are upwards of 1000 international orders placed with retailers that haven’t submitted them to Pulse yet, that puts Unicron at around 137 backers per day — well ahead of the Barge and likely to be funded.

I'm still 75% sure I'll be backing this. The only thing stopping me is the price. I typically sell toys to buy toys and this one is a pretty big purchase. So I have to sell more than usual. I'm almost there tho and 19 days is almost 3 weeks so I'm not worried.
