If anyone has a broken UW Motormaster they want to get rid of I’ll take it :)

I have the battle core optimus version of the mold. My son tore the waist off, although ours was already modified by the SND kit. Regardless, the issue is that the waist mushroom peg is not one whole peg but two half pegs put next to each other. It's prone to fail eventually as one of the half pegs will give out.

I "fixed" ours by molding and casting a new and much more stable piece with a whole peg. I wouldn't have even attempted such a fixit job if it wasn't for how much the SND kit cost and how much of a PITA it was to install the darn thing (never attempt again).
Various mods (of mods), custom stuff

Anyhow, it'd be cheaper and faster to just buy a new figure. There's a local comic store here that still sells brand new in box Motormaster and Battle Core OP.

Would glueing a piece of styrene between the pegs aid in preventing breakage?

Theoretically, yes, if you can find styrene that thin (Edit: and use epoxy to bind). Epoxy (by itself) should also theoretically help (before breakage) but the exact kind you would need would be hard to find and/or expensive: sets extremely quick with high degree of hardness. "5 minute epoxy" is relatively soft compared to resins you would buy for casting stuff (and takes a lot longer than 5 minutes for small items, closer to 10-20 minutes).

Edit: Some craft stores will sell clear epoxy / resin but that stuff takes a week to fully harden without heating.

I get all my stuff from a local Smooth On distributor.

That's horrible, I feel for those this has happened to. Especially since this MM was in a gift set only.

    It's made from Gunmetal plastic.

It's best to go to the 3d Printer store to replace gunmetal with black plastic.

TRUTH! That 1 pin ruins the whole thing. Once you take it out, it's near impossible to get it back in.

So I bought a used set from Japan a couple months ago....

I noticed the crotch part wouldn't stay flush. I took it apart and I come to find the previous owner totally did a refurbish job on it. The waist was glued together, as if it had broken there before, and they stuck tissue into the leg ratchets to make it tighter as well, hence the gap. The weak part in question wounded up breaking on me as I was taking it apart, but not at the waist, but where the pin is.

Sucks, but it probably was gonna break AGAIN eventually. I think I'm just gonna try to take a used Hasbro one and piece it back together.

I do agree the design puts a lot of stress on those 2 pieces.

It's a little bit more than that since the Hasbro version doesn't have this problem.

There’s reports here of all versions of that mold having broken waist pegs. Our Hasbro white OP can attest to that.

Guys, so does that mean that Motormaster will break eventually and there is no way to avoid the breakage?

Depends on how much he's played with. We had talked about gluing the pegs together to see if that would help as a pre-emptive measure. I would recommend epoxy instead of superglue, scuffing the surface with a file to help with adhesion, and make sure there's no excess on the outside of the peg.

Not sure if anyone actually did that and how their figure is faring.

I repaired mine by making a whole new custom piece with a solid intact whole peg.

Thanks for the reply - may I know how and where did you get that solid peg from?

I have a feeling everyone’s Takara and Hasbro version’s, if you open them up, will have stressed plastic just due to the design. It’s just the Takara version that will crack.

The way it is pinned, though, as long as you are gentle when transforming it I think it should be okay. Everything should stay together.

I don’t know how much glue will actually help, that is just my opinion though.

I didn't take pics when I did the repair as that was before I started my bloated modding thread of doom. Some limited info (same link as above):
Heavy/Scratch: - Various mods (of mods), custom stuff

It's not feasible for vast majority of modders to do as it involves molding and casting to turn 1/2 peg into full peg and then make a solid crotch part with the new peg. Also used modeling putty to make a more solid base for the peg before making a mold. A 3d printed solution would snap immediately due to horrific engineering involved in the waist joint and poor tensile strength of most 3d printed materials.

Even 3rd party plastic from the SND kits snap at the waist joint. Fortunately, I think Hastak learned not to do a waist joint like that again.
