i think after the conclusion of endgame i imagine a large chunk of the audience will move elsewhere, there will still be plenty and i mean plenty of marvel fans but endgame is why many stuck around, both tf and dc have "rebooted" and have received very positive ratings with their most recent films. i believe the film industry is changing in the sense that different studios including disney are moving away from the focus of movieverses and focus more on spotlight films, the difference is that unlike movieverses, dc and tf can handle spotlight films

Sure, that's a great strategy to stop making billions of dollars and go back to making thousands.

If there’s anything subject to cyclical changes, it would be the entertainment/movie industry.

Remember, a couple of non-Disney movies hit the billion dollar club recently when they opened: Wonder Woman and aqua man are the most notable.

I agree w/ autobot burnout. Good marketing is needed and some time to separate and distance itself it from the previous bay series. BUT, it would also have to deliver on the how solid the story is going to be, how solid the world building is.

If there’s anything going for Transformers live action, it is that it’s already a known billion $ brand, something that detective pikachu didn’t have when it opened & Godzilla, although it was remade in 2014 (or 2015?) still went through some negative press with the recent movie.

But good marketing and how good the reboots will be as far as the story goes are going to be important. The reboots have to make fans care again and casual moviegoers invested that it generates new fans, the way the 2007 movie did.

I understand your fear of Disney monopolizing the film industry, but if you ask me they just got extremely lucky this year. Most of the biggest films from other studios this year came out in an extremely crowded May and June time-frame, for some asinine reason. Disney's competition cannibalized itself this summer season. Meanwhile, Disney were able to secure uncrowded release dates, allowing them to sweep cash.

Besides, when competition is fierce, the last thing you want to do as a company is back down. Hasbro and Paramount need to stick to their guns and move forward with their new Transformers films. They just need to be careful about which release dates they choose. As long as they play their cards right, the movies will do just fine financially. And who knows, maybe this new Transformers series will be the next big thing to rival Marvel!

I'd rather the thoughts of trying to have Transformers rival the MCU are as far from the minds at Paramount as possible. After all, it was that same blind ambition that ultimately led to the stillborn TFCU because they decided to just try extending a narrative not even meant to originally go past the first film and thought China would save TLK instead of actually trying to craft a watchable film in the first place.

Paramount can't afford another TLK grade disaster. It WILL destroy them if they ever go that close to the sun again.

I think they will do better money wise if they stick to months summer and or avoid months where major marvel movies are released and also avoid December/May as no matter how bad people think the new Star Wars movies are they always do good and have so far been released at that time frame, and not to mention Rise of Skywalker looks to be the one that draws the most people to it out of the new trilogy. though I could be completely wrong.

Solo was a pretty big bomb, so I wouldn't say that they always do well.

Marvel's defiantly the one they'll have to watch out for though.

The number of things canceled in the wake of Solo not being successful is implied to be pretty numerous. If Rise of Skywalker bombs (which is a non-zero chance), then Disney is going to be in some real trouble. Not bankruptcy, it will survive another failed star wars film easily, but the reputation of the new trilogy will be in ruins and the franchise itself in jeopardy.

Like it or not, george lucas had a way better handling on the liscence before disney became an issue and I'm pretty much the BIGGEST fan of the OT/prequel era so I honestly hope it DOES fail. They started the trilogy out by throwing a bunch random new faces that I could give two shits about, adding ridiculous amounts of new concepts instead of keeping the films connected and salvaging whatever kind of ideas the fanbase had and bringing it to the big screen. Not to mention we're stuck with the likes of EA.

I don't think the franchise itself would be in jeopardy; it's my impression that the animated series do quite well. Of course, I don't know the official numbers so I am speaking purely from an economically uninformed perspective.

There's an ongoing thread on the Force.net forums asking whether the sequel trilogy has affected people's interest in Star Wars and some posters have expressed that although the sequel trilogy has negatively impacted their interest, they remain interested in the animated series and such.

Incidentally, that's honestly how I feel. It doesn't help that the animated series feel a lot closer in tone and all that to the original trilogy than the sequel trilogy do. I didn't grow up with the original trilogy, but I like it the most out of all the trilogies because it manages to maintain a mature tone while remaining a fun adventure. It never becomes too drab or too full of it and although the effects haven't aged well, the story, for the most part, have. I'd say that the only part of the story that really hasn't is the way Han's side of the romance between him and Leia is written.

I think Star Wars do well to keep juggling multiple things because that way, they have something like the animated series to fall back on to keep younger generations (and some older generations) invested in the franchise even if one part of it - in this case, the live action aspect - fails.

Transformers is still a great property... I think they need to reboot though. I think Bumblebee would have done better if it wasn't for the baggage of Michael Bay... they need to get Bay as far away from Transformers as possible. Although I heard he will be back for the next TF movie, that scares me...

I also think the Netflix series will be great for the future if Transformer sit it becomes a big hit. I really have high hopes for it, in some ways it is more important to the future of the brand then the movies.

Well, Lucas was doing just fine with that before Disney came along. Now he can live in luxury while the fans blame somebody else.

On a side note, Rogue One was really, really good.

Haven't watched that one yet but I've heard good things about it.

    Unlike The Last Jedi.

If you watch only one Disney SW film, make it Rogue One. The acting is good, the plot is coherent, the connections to Episode 4 are there - even if it causes some of the opening dialogue to be rather cringe-y.

Leia: I am a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan--

Darth Vader: You are a part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor! I mean, I just watch your ship run off with the plans just a few hours ago in the last movie! Why are you lying to me, you little runt? Go to your room and stay there. Think about what you've done and all the poor people you caused me to slaughter.

    Leia: Oh, I'm going!

Darth Vader: Don't make me bring up your mother-!

    SLAM!

Darth Vader: That's it! One interrogation probe for you Missy! Let's see how you like them apples!

That reminds me of Vader's angry pointing and his tone of voice he has while gesturing. It's weirdly reminiscent of an angry parent that's just caught their kid coming home late. You were not studying late at the library. You were at that concert. Don't lie to me.

So... Basically they did the exact same thing Lucas did during the prequels, only EA now makes star wars games, instead of lucasarts putting out shovelware?

Don't get me wrong, lucasarts made some real classics, but by the time of the prequels, they were not consistently churning out good product.

Which is a pretty good segue into the Transformers situation. Star Wars dominated the box office around the turn of the millennia, but there were still other movies coming out. Disney had their own share, a bug's Life, Mulan, toy story, Tarzan, Yadda Yadda. Superhero movies got a big piece of the pie as well (Spiderman, X-Men, let's count Harry Potter). And there were a bunch of big budget blockbusters like saving private Ryan and the matrix and gladiator and so on.

Even if there are people who only watch superhero movies (those poor folks, what a life), that's not going to be everyone, and the fact that there's more films in the top ten grosses the last few years than just marvel and star wars are proof of that. Movies are not a box office Olympics, where only the highest gross matters (as much as some people in this section of the boards may act that way sometimes), they're a business venture, and as long as they make a decent return, there's an incentive to keep doing more. Up to TLK, there was, then TLK tanked, and bumblebee was a modest success. Transformers may not be a billion dollar franchise, but it doesn't have to be. It just has to make money.

So the idea of any one studio, even Disney, having a stranglehold on the media landscape so strong at this point that everyone (or anyone, for that matter) decides they no longer can make money and... Gives up, I guess? is an idea that seems divorced from reality.

People are seeing less movies in the theatres because they have alternatives they didn't before, and because the media landscape is different. That doesn't mean there isn't room in that landscape for other players beyond the house of mouse, however.
